The Chargers · 11 verses · Meccan

In plain wordsEditorial

An editorial summary of the translations. Not a translation or tafsir.

Eleven verses opening with oaths by charging horses - the chargers this surah is named for - which strike sparks, raid at dawn and cleave through a host. What follows is about man: ungrateful to his Lord, a witness to it himself, and intense in his love of wealth — a charge the four word differently. It closes on the day the graves are emptied and what is in the breasts is brought out.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

The whole surah, verse after verse, in the language you have chosen.
