By the racers panting.
What does Surah al-Adiyat say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 100:1 By the snorting courses. This is here because it opens the surah with an oath the renderings tell at very different lengths: "By the war-horses which run swiftly to the battle, with a panting noise" in Sale against "By the snorting CHARGERS" in Rodwell, "By the snorting chargers" in Palmer, "By the snorting courses" in Pickthall and "By the racers panting" in Itani.
- 02 100:2 Striking sparks of fire. This is here because it continues the oath and shows the same spread: "which strike fire, by dashing their hoofs against the stones" in Sale, "dash off sparks of fire" in Rodwell, "strike fire with their hoofs" in Palmer and "Igniting sparks" in Itani.
- 03 100:3 And scouring to the raid at dawn. This is here because it names the hour, and the renderings differ on both the hour and the act: "make a sudden incursion on the enemy early in the morning" in Sale, "scour to the attack at morn" in Rodwell, "make incursions in the morning" in Palmer and "Raiding at dawn" in Itani.
- 04 100:4 Then, therewith, with their trail of dust. This is here because it is the dust the charge raises: "therein raise the dust" in Sale, "stir therein the dust aloft" in Rodwell, "raise up dust therein" in Palmer and "Raising clouds of dust" in Itani.
- 05 100:5 Cleaving, as one, the centre (of the foe). This is here because it closes the oaths at the centre of the enemy, worded four ways: "pass through the midst of the adverse troops" in Sale, "cleave therein their midway through a host" in Rodwell, "Cleaving, as one, the centre (of the foe)" in Pickthall with his own brackets, and "Storming into the midst" in Itani.
- 06 100:6 Lo! man is an ingrate unto his Lord. This is here because the surah turns here from the horses to man, and the word for what he is differs: "man is ungrateful unto his Lord" in Sale, "man is an ingrate unto his Lord" in Pickthall and "the human being is ungrateful to his Lord" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 07 100:7 And lo! he is a witness unto that. This is here because it makes man the witness to his own ingratitude: "he is witness thereof" in Sale, "of this he is himself a witness" in Rodwell, "he is a witness of that" in Palmer and "he bears witness to that" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 08 100:8 And lo! in the love of wealth he is violent. This is here because the renderings part here over what is loved and how: "immoderate in the love of worldly good" in Sale, "vehement in the love of this world's good" in Rodwell, "in the love of wealth he is violent" in Pickthall and "fierce in his love of wealth" in Itani, where Palmer alone has "keen in his love of good". ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 09 100:9 Knoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth. This is here because it opens the question the surah ends on: "when that which is in the graves shall be taken forth" in Sale, "when the tombs are exposed" in Palmer, "the contents of the graves are poured forth" in Pickthall and "the contents of the graves are scattered around" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from?, with a different reason there.
- 10 100:10 And the secrets of the breasts are made known. This is here because it pairs the graves with what is inside a person, and Itani says hearts where the others say breasts: "that which is in men's breasts shall be brought to light" in Sale, "the secrets of the breasts are made known" in Pickthall and "the contents of the hearts are obtained" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from?, with a different reason there.
- 11 100:11 On that day will their Lord be perfectly informed concerning them. This is here because it closes the surah, and Palmer alone addresses the reader rather than speaking of them: "their Lord will, on that day, be fully informed concerning them" in Sale, "their Lord shall on that day be informed concerning them" in Rodwell and "thy Lord upon that day indeed is well aware" in Palmer.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Adiyat is eleven verses long. It opens with a run of oaths by charging horses, turns without warning to what man is, and ends with a day on which what is hidden is brought out.
The opening oath is where the renderings differ most in length. Sale expands it - "By the war-horses which run swiftly to the battle, with a panting noise" - where Rodwell has "By the snorting CHARGERS", Palmer "By the snorting chargers", Pickthall "By the snorting courses" and Itani "By the racers panting". What follows keeps that pattern: at 100:2 Sale has "which strike fire, by dashing their hoofs against the stones" against "Igniting sparks" in Itani, and at 100:3 "make a sudden incursion on the enemy early in the morning" against "Raiding at dawn".
At 100:5 the horses reach the centre, and the renderings word it four ways: "pass through the midst of the adverse troops" in Sale, "cleave therein their midway through a host" in Rodwell, "Cleaving, as one, the centre (of the foe)" in Pickthall, where the bracketed words are his own, and "Storming into the midst" in Itani.
At 100:6 the surah turns to man. Sale has "man is ungrateful unto his Lord", Rodwell "Man is to his Lord ungrateful" and Palmer "man is to his Lord ungrateful", where Pickthall has "man is an ingrate unto his Lord" and Itani "the human being is ungrateful to his Lord". At 100:7 he is a witness to it, and at 100:8 the renderings part over what he loves: Sale has "immoderate in the love of worldly good", Rodwell "vehement in the love of this world's good", Pickthall "in the love of wealth he is violent" and Itani "fierce in his love of wealth", where Palmer alone has "keen in his love of good" - good rather than wealth, and keen rather than violent.
At 100:9-10 what is hidden comes out, in graves and in breasts: "when that which is in the graves shall be taken forth" in Sale, "when the tombs are exposed" in Palmer, "the contents of the graves are poured forth" in Pickthall and "the contents of the graves are scattered around" in Itani; then "that which is in men's breasts shall be brought to light" in Sale, "the secrets of the breasts are made known" in Pickthall and "the contents of the hearts are obtained" in Itani - breasts in four, hearts in one.
The surah closes at 100:11 with the Lord being informed, and the pronoun changes: Sale, Rodwell and Pickthall all have their Lord, where Palmer has "thy Lord upon that day indeed is well aware". The study What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth? carries 100:6-8 and the study What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from? carries 100:9-10, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say what the horses stand for, whether the oaths and the statement about man are one occasion or two, or on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 100:1, widening across 11 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 11 passages, each with every cleared translation
11 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 100:1-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eleven verses of Surah al-Adiyat, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
