And recall that We appointed for Moses forty nights. Then you took to worshiping the calf after him, and you turned wicked.
Does the Qur'an set a number of days to go out (3 days, 40 days, 4 months)?
In short
- The verses usually cited are 2:51, where forty nights are appointed for Moses and the people take to worshipping the calf after him; and 9:2, where four months to travel the land are given to those named at 9:1, the polytheists with whom a treaty was made (the idolaters in Pickthall, Palmer and Sale), with the warning that God cannot be escaped.
- The text does not say: a number of days to go out to preach. The Qur'an sets none of the numbers the question names, and no other, for going out to preach.
- The rest comes from: outside the Qur'an. The practice readers ask about, known by the names Tablighi Jamaat, tabligh, going out, chilla and gasht, or a preaching trip, is named here and not described or judged.
Where the renderings split
9:2, Itani: "So travel the land for four months"
9:2, Pickthall: "Travel freely in the land four months"
9:2, Palmer: "Roam ye at large in the land for four months"
9:2, Rodwell: "Go ye, therefore, at large in the land four months"
9:2, Sale: "Go to and fro in the earth securely four months"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:51 Forty nights appointed for Moses, and the calf taken in his absence
- 02 9:1 A declaration of immunity to the polytheists with whom a treaty was made; Pickthall, Palmer and Sale have idolaters, and Rodwell the Polytheist Arabs
- 03 9:2 Travel the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape God
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an does not set a number of days for going out to preach. The numbers the question names occur in the text, each about something else.
Forty is the time appointed for Moses: at 2:51 Pickthall has "when We did appoint for Moses forty nights (of solitude)", and Sale has "And when we treated with Moses forty nights". Pickthall's bracket is his own.
Four months are given at 9:2 to travel the land, to those named at 9:1: Itani has "the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty" and Pickthall "those of the idolaters with whom ye made a treaty". The same verse gives a warning: Pickthall has "Travel freely in the land four months, and know that ye cannot escape Allah".
Three days occur in the text as a fast and as a sign, not as a time to go out. No verse ties any of these numbers to preaching.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:51, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And a proclamation from God and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage, that God has disowned the polytheists, and so did His Messenger. If you repent, it will be better for you. But if you turn away, know that you cannot escape God. And announce to those who disbelieve a painful punishment.
And a proclamation from Allah and His messenger to all men on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and (so is) His messenger. So, if ye repent, it will be better for you; but if ye are averse, then know that ye cannot escape Allah. Give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom to those who disbelieve
A proclamation from God and His Apostle to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is clear of the idolaters as is His Apostle! If then ye repent it is better for you; but if ye turn your backs, then know that ye cannot make God helpless. Give to those who misbelieve glad tidings of grievous woe
And a proclamation on the part of God and His Apostle to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is free from any engagement with the votaries of other gods with God as is His Apostle! If, therefore, ye turn to God it will be better for you; but if ye turn back, then know that ye shall not weaken God: and to those who believe not, announce thou a grievous punishment
And a declaration from God and his apostle unto the people, on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is clear of the idolaters, and his apostle also. Wherefore if ye repent, this will be better for you; but if ye turn back, know that ye shall not weaken God: And denounce unto those who believe not, a painful punishment

The translators word this verse differently
Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty, and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term. God loves the righteous.
Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him)
Except to those of the idolaters with whom ye have made a league, and who then have not failed you at all, and have not backed up any one against you. Fulfill for them then your covenant until the time agreed upon with them; verily, God loves those who fear
But this concerneth not those Polytheists with whom ye are in league, and who shall have afterwards in no way failed you, nor aided anyone against you. Observe, therefore, engagement with them through the whole time of their treaty: for God loveth those who fear Him
Except such of the idolaters with whom ye shall have entered into a league, and who afterwards shall not fail you in any instance, nor assist any other against you. Wherefore perform the covenant which ye shall have made with them, until their time shall be elapsed; for God loveth those who fear him
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an sets a number of days to go out. The probe 'three days' returns 20 rows at four verses (2:196, 3:41, 5:89, 11:65): a fast in the pilgrimage, Zechariah's sign, a fast of expiation, and the respite given to Thamud; none speaks of going out, and they are recorded as not carried. The probe for forty days or nights returns 2:51, carried here, and 7:142, where the forty nights are told as thirty completed with ten; 7:142 is recorded as not carried, because the text stored under Sale's name there is not Sale's own, so the verse is left out. 9:1 is carried beside 9:2 because it names those the four months are given to. The probe 'four months' returns 2:226, 2:234, 2:235 and 9:2; the first three are waiting periods in marriage and are recorded as not carried.
