How does the Qur'an describe the golden calf - and which questions does it raise and not answer?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 20:83–89 In as ONE PASSAGE because it runs from Moses' absence to the calf itself without a break: what made thee hasten from thy folk? - We have tried thy folk in thine absence, AND AS-SAMIRI HATH MISLED THEM - Moses returns angry and sad - they plead that they were laden with the ornaments of the folk and threw them in - THEN HE PRODUCED FOR THEM A CALF, OF SAFFRON HUE, WHICH GAVE FORTH A LOWING SOUND - and they cried, this is your god - SEE THEY NOT THAT IT RETURNETH NO SAYING UNTO THEM, and possesseth for them neither hurt nor use.
  2. 02 20:90–94 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the confrontation between the brothers and neither half stands alone: AARON INDEED HAD TOLD THEM BEFOREHAND - ye are but being seduced - they said, we shall not cease to be its votaries till Moses return - Moses: what held thee back when thou didst see them go astray? - AARON: O SON OF MY MOTHER! CLUTCH NOT MY BEARD NOR MY HEAD! I FEARED LEST THOU SHOULDST SAY: THOU HAST CAUSED A DIVISION AMONG THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.
  3. 03 20:95–98 In as ONE PASSAGE because the questioning of the Samiri and the destruction of the calf are one exchange: what hast thou to say, O Samiri? - I perceived what they perceive not, so I seized a handful from the footsteps of the messenger and cast it in - GO! IT IS FOR THEE TO SAY, TOUCH ME NOT - and look at thy god to which thou hast remained devoted; WE WILL SURELY BURN IT AND SCATTER ITS DUST OVER THE SEA.
  4. 04 7:152–153 In as ONE PASSAGE because 7:153 is the turn that 7:152 requires, and the study would be false without it: those who chose the calf, TERROR FROM THEIR LORD AND HUMILIATION WILL COME UPON THEM - BUT THOSE WHO DO ILL-DEEDS AND AFTERWARD REPENT AND BELIEVE, LO! FOR THEM, AFTERWARD, ALLAH IS FORGIVING, MERCIFUL. Carried from a different surah, as the coda, because surah 20's telling does not itself state the forgiveness.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Surah 20 tells it as a scene with four people in it, and this study follows that telling rather than assembling the episode from every surah that mentions it.

Moses has gone ahead to his appointment. In his absence, the text says, the people are tried, and A FIGURE CALLED AS-SAMIRI misleads them. Moses comes back ANGRY AND SAD - both words, in all four renderings.

Their defence, at 20:87, is that they were burdened with the people's ornaments and threw them in. Then 20:88: HE PRODUCED FOR THEM A CALF, OF SAFFRON HUE, WHICH GAVE FORTH A LOWING SOUND. And they said: this is your god, and the god of Moses, but he has forgotten.

20:89 gives the text's own verdict, and it is an argument rather than a denunciation: DO THEY NOT SEE THAT IT RETURNS THEM NO WORD, and has no power to harm or profit them? The objection to the calf is that it does not answer.

Then the part of the story most tellings leave out. 20:90 says AARON HAD ALREADY WARNED THEM - you are only being tried by this; your Lord is the Beneficent, so follow me. They refused, and said they would keep at it until Moses came back. So when Moses seizes his brother by the head and beard, the text has already established that Aaron had done what he could. Aaron's reply is one of the most human lines in the book: O SON OF MY MOTHER, DO NOT SEIZE ME BY MY BEARD OR MY HEAD - I FEARED YOU WOULD SAY I HAD DIVIDED THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.

The Samiri is questioned, gives an answer the text does not explain, and is sentenced to say TOUCH ME NOT - to isolation. And the calf is burnt and scattered in the sea.

Surah 20's telling ends there. 7:153 supplies what it does not say, and this study carries it deliberately: those who did the wrong and AFTERWARDS REPENTED AND BELIEVED - for them, afterwards, God is Forgiving and Merciful. The episode is not left at the punishment.

The identity of the Samiri, what he took from the messenger's footsteps, and how the calf lowed are questions the text raises and does not answer. Commentators have argued about all three. No has cleared the rights audit here, so this study leaves the gaps where the text leaves them.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 20:83–89, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

20:89 A nuk e shihnin se ai nuk u përgjigjej atyre në asnjë fjalë, as mund t'u bënte dëm e as dobi?

20:89 Μα δεν είδαν ότι (εκείνο το άγαλμα) δεν τους απαντούσε στα λόγια τους, ούτε μπορούσε να τους προστατέψει από κανένα κακό, ούτε να τους φέρει κανένα όφελος;

Ar jūs panorote, kad pyktis nusileistų ant jūsų iš jūsų Viešpaties dėl to, kad jūs sulaužėte savo pažadą man (t. y. netikėdami Allahą ir garbindami veršiuką)?“

20:84 Akasema: Hao wapo nyuma yangu wananifuata.

Fakat o unuttu." dediler.

(Moses) said: Then go! and lo! in this life it is for thee to say: Touch me not! and lo! there is for thee a tryst thou canst not break. Now look upon thy god of which thou hast remained a votary. Verily we will burn it and will scatter its dust over the sea

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

Said he, 'Then get thee gone; verily, it shall be thine in life to say, "Touch me not!" and, verily, for thee there is a threat which thou shalt surely never alter. But look at thy god to which thou wert just now devout; we will surely burn it, and then we will scatter it in scattered pieces in the sea

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

He said, "Begone then: verily thy doom even in this life shall be to say, 'Touch me not.' And there is a threat against thee, which thou shalt not escape hereafter. Now look at thy god to which thou hast continued so devoted: we will surely burn it and reduce it to ashes, which we will cast into the sea

George Sale published 1734

Moses said, get thee gone; for thy punishment in this life shall be, that thou shalt say unto those who shall meet thee, touch me not; and a threat is denounced against thee of more terrible pains, in the life to come, which thou shalt by no means escape. And behold now thy god, to whose worship thou hast continued assiduously devoted: Verily we will burn it; and we will reduce it to powder, and scatter it in the sea

Ai përfshin çdo gjë me diturinë e Tij."

Talal Itani2012 And when Moses returned to his people, angry and disappointed, he said, "What an awful thing you did in my absence. Did you forsake the commandments of your Lord so hastily?" And he threw down the tablets; and he took hold of his brother's head, dragging him towards himself. He said, "Son of my mother, the people have overpowered me, and were about to kill me; so do not allow the enemies to gloat over me, and do not count me among the unjust people."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when Moses returned unto his people, angry and grieved, he said: Evil is that (course) which ye took after I had left you. Would ye hasten on the judgment of your Lord? And he cast down the tablets, and he seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward him. He said: Son of my mother! Lo! the folk did judge me weak and almost killed me. Oh, make not mine enemies to triumph over me and place me not among the evil-doers

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And when Moses returned unto his people angry and grieved, he said, 'Evil is it that ye have done after me! Would ye hasten on the bidding of your Lord?' and he threw down the tablets and took his brother by the head to drag him towards him, but he said, 'O son of my mother! verily, the people weakened me and well-nigh killed me; make not then mine enemies glad about me, and put me not with the unjust people

John Medows Rodwell1861 And when Moses returned to his people, wrathful, angered, he said, "Evil is it that ye have done next upon my departure. Would ye hasten on the judgments of your Lord?" And he threw down the tables, and seized his brother by the head and dragged him unto him. Said he, "Son of my mother! the people thought me weak, and had well nigh slain me. Make not mine enemies to rejoice over me, and place me not among the wrong doers

George Sale1734 And when Moses returned to his people, indignant and grieved, he said, 'Evil is that which you did in my place in my absence. Did you hasten to devise a way for yourselves without waiting for the command of your Lord?' And he put down the tablet and seized his brother by the head, dragging him towards himself. Aaron said, 'Son of my mother, the people indeed deemed me weak, and were about to kill me. Therefore make not the enemies rejoice over my misfortune and place me not with the unjust people

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointed tryst and, when the trembling came on them, he said: My Lord! If Thou hadst willed Thou hadst destroyed them long before, and me with them. Wilt thou destroy us for that which the ignorant among us did? It is but Thy trial (of us). What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 20:83-89, 20:90-94, 20:95-98, 7:152-153, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.

What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:51 - 2:51-54 not carried: surah 2's telling of the same episode is a summary rather than a narrative, and the Editor's instruction was to take ONE coherent arc; 7:148 - 7:148-151 not carried: surah 7's own account of the making of the calf duplicates surah 20's without adding a scene, and carrying both would be the corpus-dump the frame forbids.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
