The ignorant among the people will say, "What has turned them away from the direction of prayer they once followed?" Say, "To God belong the East and the West. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
What does the Qur'an say about the prayer direction (qibla), and why it changed - and what history does it not give?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:142–143 In as ONE PASSAGE because 2:143 answers the objection 2:142 raises: THE FOOLISH OF THE PEOPLE WILL SAY: WHAT HATH TURNED THEM FROM THE QIBLAH WHICH THEY FORMERLY OBSERVED? Say: to Allah belong the East and the West - and We appointed the qiblah which ye formerly observed ONLY THAT WE MIGHT KNOW HIM WHO FOLLOWETH THE MESSENGER FROM HIM WHO TURNETH ON HIS HEELS. Carried because the text raises the objection against itself and answers it in its own words, which is rare and is the whole interest of the passage.
- 02 2:144–145 In as ONE PASSAGE because 2:145 is the consequence of 2:144: We have seen the turning of thy face to heaven, and now We shall make thee turn toward a qiblah DEAR TO THEE - so turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship - and even if thou broughtest every portent to those who have the Scripture they would not follow thy qiblah. Carried because it records the change being made and the reaction expected.
- 03 2:149–150 In as ONE PASSAGE because the instruction is repeated across both verses with a widening address: whencesoever thou comest forth, turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship - and WHERESOEVER YE MAY BE, turn your faces toward it. Carried because the repetition moves from the Prophet to everyone, and fixes the direction for all places.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This is one of the very few places where the Qur'an narrates a change in its own practice, states the objection to it, and answers.
2:142 puts the objection in the mouths of critics before anyone else can: THE FOOLISH WILL SAY - WHAT HAS TURNED THEM FROM THE DIRECTION THEY USED TO FACE? The text anticipates that changing the direction of prayer would look like inconsistency, and says so.
The answer comes in two parts. First: to God belong the East and the West - the direction is not where God is. Second, and more pointed: the former direction was appointed ONLY THAT WE MIGHT KNOW who would follow the messenger and who would turn on his heels. The change is presented as having been a test, and a hard one - 2:143 goes on to say it was hard indeed, save for those whom God guided.
2:144 records the change itself, and includes an unusually personal detail: We have seen the turning of your face toward heaven, and now We shall turn you toward a direction DEAR TO YOU. The instruction is then given, and 2:145 adds that those who received the Scripture will not follow it whatever portent is brought.
2:149-150 repeats the command and widens it - from wherever you come out, and wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it. That repetition is what makes the direction universal rather than local.
So the answer to the question as asked: the direction is the Inviolable Place of Worship; it was changed from an earlier one; the text says the change was a test of who would follow; and it insists in the same passage that God is not located in either direction.
What the text does not give is the history - when, after how long, or which direction was faced before. All four renderings leave the former qibla unnamed. That information comes from the biography and the occasions of revelation, and neither has cleared the rights audit here. It is an absence with a named cause, and in this case a conspicuous one: the passage is about a change whose starting point it does not name.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:142–143, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Thus We made you a moderate community, that you may be witnesses to humanity, and that the Messenger may be a witness to you. We only established the direction of prayer, which you once followed, that We may distinguish those who follow the Messenger from those who turn on their heels. It is indeed difficult, except for those whom God has guided. But God would never let your faith go to waste. God is Kind towards the people, Merciful.

Thus have we made you a middle nation, to be witnesses against men, and that the Apostle may be a witness against you. But God will not waste your faith, for verily, God with men is kind and merciful
Thus have we made you a central people, that ye may be witnesses in regard to mankind, and that the apostle may be a witness in regard to you. We appointed the kebla which thou formerly hadst, only that we might know him who followeth the apostle, from him who turneth on his heels: The change is a difficulty, but not to those whom God hath guided. But God will not let your faith be fruitless; for unto man is God Merciful, Gracious
Thus have we placed you, O Arabians, an intermediate nation, that ye may be witnesses against the rest of mankind, and that the Apostle may be a witness against you. We appointed the Keblah towards which thou didst formerly pray, only that we might know him who followeth the Apostle, from him who turneth back on his heel; though this change seem a great matter, unless unto those whom God hath directed. But God will not render your faith of none effect; for God is gracious and merciful unto man

2:142 Wapumbavu miongoni mwa watu watasema: ‘Ni nini kilichowageuza kutoka kibla chao walichokuwa wakikielekea?’

We have seen your face turned towards the heaven. So We will turn you towards a direction that will satisfy you. So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it. Those who were given the Book know that it is the Truth from their Lord; and God is not unaware of what they do.
We have seen the turning of thy face to heaven (for guidance, O Muhammad). And now verily We shall make thee turn (in prayer) toward a qiblah which is dear to thee. So turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship, and ye (O Muslims), wheresoever ye may be, turn your faces (when ye pray) toward it. Lo! Those who have received the Scripture know that (this revelation) is the Truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do
We see thee often turn about thy face in the heavens, but we will surely turn thee to a qiblah thou shalt like. Even if you were to bring to those who were given the Book every proof, they would not follow your direction, nor are you to follow their direction, nor do they follow the direction of one another. And if you were to follow their desires, after the knowledge that has come to you, you would be in that case one of the wrongdoers.
And even if thou broughtest unto those who have received the Scripture all kinds of portents, they would not follow thy qiblah, nor canst thou be a follower of their qiblah; nor are some of them followers of the qiblah of others. And if thou shouldst follow their desires after the knowledge which hath come unto thee, then surely wert thou of the evil-doers
And if thou shouldst bring to those who have been given the Book every sign, they would not follow your qiblah; and thou art not to follow their qiblah; nor do some of them follow the qiblah of the others: and if thou followest their lusts after the knowledge that has come to thee then art thou of the evildoers
Even though thou shouldest bring every kind of sign to those who have received the Scriptures, yet thy kebla they will not adopt; nor shalt thou adopt their kebla; nor will one part of them adopt the kebla of the other. And if, after the knowledge which hath come to thee, thou follow their wishes, verily then wilt thou become of the unrighteous

Madje, as ata nuk do të ndjekin kiblën e njëri-tjetrit.

Ir Allahas nėra nežinantis to, ką jie daro.

2:144 Kwa yakini, tuliona unavyougeuzageuza uso wako mbinguni. Basi, tutakuelekeza kwenye Kibla unachokiridhia.
2:144 (Ey Muhammed!) Biz, senin yüzünü çok defa semaya doğru çevirip durduğunu görüyoruz. Elbette seni razı olacağın bir kıbleye döndüreceğiz. Artık yüzünü Mescid-i Haram tarafına çevir.

Thus We have appointed you a middle nation, that ye may be witnesses against mankind, and that the messenger may be a witness against you. And We appointed the qiblah which ye formerly observed only that We might know him who followeth the messenger, from him who turneth on his heels. In truth it was a hard (test) save for those whom Allah guided. But it was not Allah's purpose that your faith should be in vain, for Allah is Full of Pity, Merciful toward mankind
Thus have we made you a middle nation, to be witnesses against men, and that the Apostle may be a witness against you. We have not appointed the qiblah on which thou wert agreed, save that we might know who follows the Apostle from him who turns upon his heels although it is a great thing save to those whom God doth guide.

So that the people may not have any argument against you-except those who do wrong among them. So do not fear them, but fear Me, that I may complete My blessings upon you, and that you may be guided.

Whencesoever thou comest forth turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship; and wheresoever ye may be (O Muslims) turn your faces toward it (when ye pray) so that men may have no argument against you, save such of them as do injustice - Fear them not, but fear Me! - and so that I may complete My grace upon you, and that ye may be guided
And from whencesoever thou comest forth, there turn thy face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wheresoever ye are, turn your faces towards it, that men may have no argument against you, save only those of them who are unjust; and fear them not, but fear me and I will fulfil my favours to you, perchance ye may be guided yet
And from whatever place thou comest forth, turn thy face toward the sacred Mosque; and wherever ye be, to that part turn your faces, lest men have cause of dispute against you: but as for the impious among them, fear them not; but fear me, that I may perfect my favours on you, and that ye may be guided aright
From what place soever thou comest forth, turn thy face towards the holy temple; and wherever ye be, thitherward turn your faces, lest men have matter of dispute against you; but as for those among them who are unjust doers, fear them not, but fear me, that I may accomplish my grace upon you, and that ye may be directed

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

2:149 Nereden yola çıkarsan çık, namazda yüzünü Mescid-i Haram'a doğru çevir. Şüphesiz bu, Rabbinden gelen bir gerçektir. Allah, sizin yaptıklarınızdan asla habersiz değildir.
2:150 (Ey Rasûlüm!) Nereden yola çıkarsan çık, (namazda) yüzünü Mescid-i Haram yönüne çevir.

To every community is a direction towards which it turns. Therefore, race towards goodness. Wherever you may be, God will bring you all together. God is capable of everything.
And each one hath a goal toward which he turneth; so vie with one another in good works. Wheresoever ye may be, Allah will bring you all together. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things
Every sect has some one side to which they turn (in prayer); but do ye hasten onwards to good works; wherever ye are God will bring you all together; verily, God is mighty over all
All have a quarter of the Heavens to which they turn them; but wherever ye be, hasten emulously after good: God will one day bring you all together; verily, God is all-powerful
Every sect hath a certain tract of heaven to which they turn themselves in prayer; but for ye strive to run after good things: Wherever ye be, God will bring you all back at the resurrection, for God is almighty

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:142-143, 2:144-145, 2:149-150, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
