What does Surah al-Fil say about the companions of the elephant - and what does it not say?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 105:1–5 أَلَمْ تَرَ - HAST THOU NOT SEEN HOW THY LORD DEALT WITH THE COMPANIONS OF THE ELEPHANT? In as ONE PASSAGE because this is a whole-surah study and the surah is five verses: taken apart, the opening question loses the answer and the stones lose the plan they answer. Carried entire so that what the surah says and what it withholds are visible in the same view - an event pointed at, never described, and closed in four verses on the manner of its ending. Divergence bands 1, 4, 4, 5, 5 of 5, the widest spread falling on 105:4-5. 105:4 is one of three verses in the corpus carrying حِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ, with 11:82 and 15:74. NOT carried by any other study: surah 105 has no anchor in the live corpus, which is why this study exists.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Five verses, and the first of them is a question to someone who is assumed to know the answer already: أَلَمْ تَرَ - "Hast thou not seen" in Sale 1734, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930 alike. The surah opens by pointing at an event, and it never describes the event. That is not a gap this study fills. It is the shape of the surah, and it governs everything a reader can honestly take from it.

WHAT THE FIVE VERSES SAY. A force is named only by what it had with it: أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ, the companions of the elephant. Their كَيْدَهُمْ - their plan, their scheme - was put astray. Birds were sent against them, طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ. The birds pelted them with بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ, stones of baked clay. They were left كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍۭ, like stubble eaten down. That is the whole of it: an unnamed force, a plan brought to nothing, birds, stones, and a ruin compared to chewed straw.

THE ADDRESS IS THE POINT. Because the surah asks rather than narrates, its subject is not really the battle. It is what the hearer is supposed to conclude from a thing they already know: that the force with the elephant was stopped, and by what. The surah spends four of its five verses on the manner of the ending and none on the attackers' identity, their purpose, or where they had come from.

THE STONES ARE NOT UNIQUE TO THIS SURAH. حِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ - stones of baked clay - occurs in three verses of the corpus: 11:82, 15:74 and 105:4. The other two are the destruction of Lot's people. The surah therefore places this ending in a class the book uses elsewhere, and that connection is in the text itself, not supplied from outside. What the book does NOT do is explain the phrase, in any of the three places.

WHERE THE FIVE RENDERINGS PART COMPANY. This is a short surah and the renderings disagree across most of it.

* أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ (105:1) is "the masters of the elephant" (Sale 1734), "the army of the ELEPHANT" (Rodwell 1861), "the fellows of the elephant" (Palmer 1880), "the owners of the Elephant" (Pickthall 1930) and "the People of the Elephant" (Itani 2012). Rodwell's "army" is the one that adds a fact: masters, fellows, owners and people all leave the group's character open, and army does not. The study reports the spread and does not choose between them. * طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ (105:3) is "flocks of birds" (Sale), "birds in flocks (ababils)" (Rodwell), "birds in flocks" (Palmer), "swarms of flying creatures" (Pickthall) and "swarms of birds" (Itani). Rodwell alone carries the Arabic word across untranslated, in brackets. أَبَابِيلَ occurs once in the corpus, here. The estate holds no lexicon source of any kind - the sources register has no lexicon row, cleared or otherwise - so this study does not tell you what the word means. It tells you that five translators reached for four different English words and one of them refused. * كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍۭ (105:5) is "the leaves of corn eaten by cattle" (Sale), "stubble eaten down" (Rodwell), "blades of herbage eaten down" (Palmer), "green crops devoured (by cattle)" (Pickthall) and "chewed-up leaves" (Itani).

The estate's derived divergence measure runs 1 to 5 and puts 105:1 at band 1 - the renderings are close on the opening question - then 105:2 and 105:3 at band 4, and 105:4 and 105:5 at band 5. The surah gets harder to render as it goes.

WHAT THE TEXT DOES NOT SUPPLY. Readers usually arrive at this surah already holding a commander's name, a year, a place and a target. NONE OF THE FOUR IS IN THE SURAH, and this study asserts none of them. Probed case-insensitively on 2026-09-08 across all 31,173 rows of the five cleared renderings, and against the served Arabic of all 6,236 verses:

* A COMMANDER: probe "Abraha" or "Abrahah" - 0 rows corpus-wide, in any rendering. * A YEAR OR ERA: probe for the phrase year of the elephant - 0 rows corpus-wide. No rendering of 105 carries a date, a regnal year or an era of any kind. * A TARGET: probes "Kaaba", "Ka'bah" or "Caaba" (and spellings between) - 11 rows, at 5:95, 5:97 and 22:26, and none of them in surah 105. The word ٱلْفِيلِ occurs in exactly one verse of the corpus, 105:1, and no verse of surah 105 names a building, a sanctuary or a city. * A PLACE: probe "Mecca", "Makkah" or "Bakkah" - 91 rows across 72 verses, none in surah 105.

So the surah does not say who they were, who led them, when it happened, where it happened, or what they had come for. It says that they came with an elephant, that their plan failed, and how. A reader who knows more than that knows it from somewhere else, and this study's business is to say where that somewhere is.

WHERE THE FAMILIAR ACCOUNT LIVES, AND WHY IT IS NOT QUOTED HERE. The named commander, the year, the march and the target belong to the sira, and literature. The estate holds no usable source in any of the three. The sources register records the whole traditional tier as unavailable: the OpenITI corpus is pending request, al-Maktaba al-Shamela is closed and unusable, sunnah.com is unresolved, and al-Wahidi's Asbab al-Nuzul in English is pending request. Not one is ingest-permitted. The occasions table, which would carry an occasion of revelation if the estate had a source for one, holds 0 rows for the whole corpus. This is an absence with a named cause, not an omission, and it will stay until one of those requests clears.

The study What does the Qur'an say about the occasions its verses answered? takes up what the Qur'an says about the occasions its verses answered, as a matter of the book's own language. This study is about surah 105 and stops at its five verses.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

WHAT THIS STUDY DOES NOT ANSWER, and the layer that would. Who the companions of the elephant were; who led them; in what year; against what; whether the birds are to be read as a natural event or otherwise; and what أَبَابِيلَ means. The first four need sira or , the fifth needs , the sixth needs a lexicon. The estate holds a cleared source for none of them, and the occasions table is empty at 0 rows.

What this rests on

Opens with 105:1–5.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it7 of the 8 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

The surah's own text and the five cleared renderings of it, read in full, and nothing else.

THE SERVED ARABIC is Tanzil Uthmani 1.1 (Tanzil Qur'an text, Uthmani, Version 1.1; licence CC BY 3.0), the text this platform serves. Every Arabic phrase quoted in the synthesis above is a substring of the served text at the verse cited, checked character by character on 2026-09-08; none is transcribed from memory or from another edition.

The five cleared translations, in full at 105:1-5, and no others: Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 and Itani 2012. All five render all five verses; none of surah 105 falls in Palmer's seven missing verses. Every English phrase attributed to a translator above is quoted from that translator's row in the translations table at the verse cited.

THE EDITOR'S PLAIN READING, quoted rather than re-derived. The plain-reading layer carries a signed surah-level reading of 105: "Five verses recalling what was done to the owners of the elephant, which this surah is named for: a plan brought to nothing, birds, stones of baked clay, and an end like stubble eaten down." The synthesis above states the same content and is consistent with it by design, under the one-claim-one-wording practice. Where this draft goes further than the plain reading it does so only by naming the rendering spread and the absences, both of which are measured here.

WHERE THE NUMBERS COME FROM. Every count is a query against the live tables on 2026-09-08, none is quoted from a source: 5 verses in surah 105 (the surah verse counts); Meccan, position 19 of 114 in the one ordering the platform holds (the recorded place of revelation, the surah revelation positions - and that ordering is unnamed, as the study In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book? sets out); ٱلْفِيلِ in 1 verse and أَبَابِيلَ in 1 verse of 6,236; حِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ in 3 verses, at 11:82, 15:74 and 105:4; divergence bands 1, 4, 4, 5, 5 across 105:1-5 (the divergence scores); 31,173 rendering rows and 6,236 served verses as the probe denominators.

NO MEANING-CLAIM IS MADE FROM NOWHERE. This study does not say what أَبَابِيلَ means, what سِجِّيلٍ is made of, or what أَصْحَٰبِ denotes beyond the five renderings' own words, because the estate holds no lexicon and no cleared . Morphology is held only as CAMeL Morph MSA 1.0, a Modern Standard Arabic analyser used for tokenisation, and it is not a dictionary of Qur'anic usage; nothing above rests on it except token counts.

Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a sentence saying why Rodwell left a word untranslated was removed, since nothing on the page shows his reason. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
