Did We not soothe your heart?
What does Surah ash-Sharh say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 94:1 Have We not caused thy bosom to dilate. This is here because it opens the surah with a question to the person addressed, and the renderings word what is done differently: "opened thy breast" in Sale, "OPENED thine heart" in Rodwell, "expanded for thee thy breast" in Palmer, "caused thy bosom to dilate" in Pickthall, and Itani has "soothe your heart?"
- 02 94:2 And eased thee of the burden. This is here because it continues the question with a burden taken from the person addressed, called "thy burden" in Sale and Rodwell, "thy load" in Palmer, "the burden" in Pickthall and "your burden" in Itani.
- 03 94:3 Which weighed down thy back. This is here because it goes on to what the burden did to the back, in words the renderings do not all share: "galled thy back" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "weighed down thy back" in Pickthall, and Itani has "weighed down your back?"
- 04 94:4 And exalted thy fame. This is here because it closes the opening question, and the renderings name what is raised or exalted differently: "thy reputation" in Sale, "thy name" in Rodwell, "thy renown" in Palmer, "thy fame" in Pickthall, and Itani has "your reputation?"
- 05 94:5 But lo! with hardship goeth ease. This is here because it sets ease beside what the renderings call "a difficulty" in Sale, "trouble" in Rodwell, "difficulty" in Palmer and "hardship" in Pickthall and Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an mean that "with hardship comes ease"?, with a different reason there.
- 06 94:6 Lo! with hardship goeth ease. This is here because it repeats the verse before it in each rendering, with the opening word left off in Rodwell and Pickthall: "Verily along with trouble cometh ease" in Rodwell and "Lo! with hardship goeth ease" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an mean that "with hardship comes ease"?, with a different reason there.
- 07 94:7 So when thou art relieved, still toil. This is here because the renderings word both halves of it differently: "ended thy preaching" in Sale, "set at liberty" in Rodwell, "at leisure" in Palmer, "relieved" in Pickthall and "your work is done" in Itani, followed by "labour to serve God in return for his favours" in Sale, "prosecute thy toil" in Rodwell, "then toil" in Palmer, "still toil" in Pickthall and "turn to devotion" in Itani.
- 08 94:8 And strive to please thy Lord. This is here because it closes the surah by turning the person addressed toward "thy Lord" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall and "your Lord" in Itani, with the verb worded differently: "make thy supplication" in Sale, "seek" in Rodwell, "yearn" in Palmer, "strive to please" in Pickthall and "turn for everything" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah ash-Sharh speaks to a person it does not name, addressed as "thee" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall and as "you" in Itani. It opens with a question, worded "Have We not" in Sale and Pickthall, "HAVE we not" in Rodwell, "Have we not" in Palmer and "Did We not" in Itani.
At 94:1 the renderings use different words for what is done and to what: "opened thy breast" in Sale, "OPENED thine heart" in Rodwell, "expanded for thee thy breast" in Palmer, "caused thy bosom to dilate" in Pickthall, and Itani has "soothe your heart?" At 94:2 the renderings have "eased thee of thy burden" in Sale, "taken off from thee thy burden" in Rodwell, "set down from thee thy load" in Palmer, "eased thee of the burden" in Pickthall and "lift from you your burden" in Itani. At 94:3 that burden "galled thy back" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer and "weighed down thy back" in Pickthall, with Itani's "weighed down your back?" The verses do not say what the burden was, and this study does not say either. At 94:4 the renderings have "raised thy reputation for thee" in Sale, "raised thy name for thee" in Rodwell, where the question is put again as "have we not", "exalted for thee thy renown" in Palmer, "exalted thy fame" in Pickthall, and Itani has "raised for you your reputation?"
In each rendering the wording of 94:6 repeats that of 94:5, with the opening word left off in Rodwell and Pickthall. At 94:5 Rodwell opens with "Then verily" and Pickthall with "But lo!" The renderings of 94:5 name the hardship as "a difficulty" in Sale, "trouble" in Rodwell, "difficulty" in Palmer and "hardship" in Pickthall and Itani, and join ease to it with "shall be attended with ease" in Sale, "cometh ease" in Rodwell, "is ease" in Palmer, "goeth ease" in Pickthall and "comes ease" in Itani.
At 94:7 the renderings word the first half differently: "ended thy preaching" in Sale, "set at liberty" in Rodwell, "at leisure" in Palmer, "relieved" in Pickthall and "your work is done" in Itani. What is then to be done at 94:7 is worded "labour to serve God in return for his favours" in Sale, "prosecute thy toil" in Rodwell, "then toil" in Palmer, "still toil" in Pickthall and "turn to devotion" in Itani. Sale's "preaching" and "in return for his favours" have no counterpart in the other renderings. At 94:8 the renderings close with "make thy supplication unto thy Lord" in Sale, "seek thy Lord with fervour" in Rodwell, "for thy Lord do thou yearn" in Palmer, "strive to please thy Lord" in Pickthall and "to your Lord turn for everything" in Itani.
The study What does the Qur'an mean that "with hardship comes ease"? also carries 94:5 and 94:6, with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the person the surah addresses, the burden taken from that person or the work that person is to turn to, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 94:1, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 94:1-8, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eight verses of Surah ash-Sharh, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
