For the security of Quraish.
What does Surah Quraysh say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 106:1 For the taming of Qureysh. This is here because it opens the surah with the name the rest of it follows, spelled "Koreish" in Sale, "KOREISCH" in Rodwell, "Qurais" in Palmer, "Qureysh" in Pickthall and "Quraish" in Itani, and with what is theirs, "the uniting" in Sale and Palmer, "the union" in Rodwell, "the taming" in Pickthall and "the security" in Itani.
- 02 106:2 For their taming (We cause) the caravans to set forth in winter and summer. This is here because it carries that word on to winter and summer, in words the renderings do not all share: "sending forth the caravan of merchants and purveyors" in Sale, "equipping caravans" in Rodwell, "the caravan of winter and summer" in Palmer, "the caravans to set forth" in Pickthall and "winter and summer journeys" in Itani.
- 03 106:3 So let them worship the Lord of this House. This is here because it turns to the Lord of this house, with the verb "serve" in Sale and Palmer and "worship" in Rodwell, Pickthall and Itani, and in Rodwell the verse also holds the feeding against hunger. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about being tested with fear, hunger and loss?, with a different reason there.
- 04 106:4 Who hath fed them against hunger and hath made them safe from fear. This is here because it closes the surah with what is said of the Lord of the house, made safe "from fear" in Sale and Pickthall and "against fear" in Palmer and Itani, where Rodwell's verse has "secured them against alarm". ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about being tested with fear, hunger and loss?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah Quraysh is four verses long. Its opening verse gives a name, spelled "Koreish" in Sale, "KOREISCH" in Rodwell, "Qurais" in Palmer, "Qureysh" in Pickthall and "Quraish" in Itani, and Sale writes "the tribe of Koreish". The rest of the surah does not name them again.
At 106:1 what is theirs is "the uniting" in Sale and Palmer, "the union" in Rodwell, "the taming" in Pickthall and "the security" in Itani. At 106:2 Sale has "their uniting in sending forth the caravan of merchants and purveyors", Palmer "the caravan of winter and summer", Rodwell "equipping caravans", Pickthall "the caravans to set forth" and Itani "security during winter and summer journeys". Pickthall's "(We cause)" is in brackets that mark the words as his own. The verse does not say where the caravans go, and this study does not say either.
At 106:3 the verb is "serve" in Sale and Palmer and "worship" in Rodwell, Pickthall and Itani. The Lord named is the Lord of "this house" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer and of "this House" in Pickthall and Itani. The verse does not name the house.
The renderings do not divide the end of the surah in the same place. Rodwell places the feeding against hunger at the end of 106:3, where the other renderings place it in 106:4. What they are made safe from is "fear" in Sale, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, and "alarm" in Rodwell.
The study What does the Qur'an say about being tested with fear, hunger and loss? carries 106:3-4, with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify those the surah names, where they journeyed or which house is meant, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 106:1, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 106:1-4, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all four verses of Surah Quraysh, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
