They said, "Our Lord, we have done wrong to ourselves. Unless You forgive us, and have mercy on us, we will be among the losers."
What is the supplication of Adam after the fall?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:23 THEY SAID: OUR LORD! WE HAVE WRONGED OURSELVES. IF THOU FORGIVE US NOT AND HAVE NOT MERCY ON US, SURELY WE ARE OF THE LOST. Carried whole because the prayer is in the PLURAL - both of them say it together - and because it contains no request beyond the two verbs, and no excuse.
- 02 2:37 THEN ADAM RECEIVED FROM HIS LORD WORDS OF REVELATION, AND HE RELENTED TOWARD HIM. Lo! He is the relenting, the Merciful. This is here because it says the words were GIVEN to him, which bears directly on where the prayer at 7:23 came from. ALSO CARRIED by How does the Qur'an tell the story of Adam and the fall?, where it falls inside the narrative arc with a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Two verses in different surahs, and read together they say something about the prayer that neither says alone.
7:23 gives the words: OUR LORD, WE HAVE WRONGED OURSELVES. IF YOU DO NOT FORGIVE US AND HAVE MERCY ON US, WE SHALL SURELY BE AMONG THE LOST.
Three things about it. It is PLURAL - they both say it, together; the text does not give Adam a solo. It contains no excuse: no mention of the serpent, no shifting of it onto the one who whispered, though the text has just described that whispering. And it names the injury as self-inflicted - we have wronged OURSELVES.
Then 2:37, in the other telling: THEN ADAM RECEIVED FROM HIS LORD WORDS, and He relented toward him.
The words were received. On the plainest reading of the two verses together, the prayer at 7:23 is not something Adam thought of; it is what he was given to say. The turning was answered with the means of turning.
That is worth pausing on, because it changes what the episode is. The sequence in the text is: the slip, then words provided, then the relenting. The forgiveness is not extracted by a well-chosen prayer. The prayer is part of the mercy.
And the relenting is immediate. There is no interval of estrangement in the text, no inherited condition, no debt carried forward. 2:37 grants it in the same verse that mentions the words, and 20:122 in the third telling - rendered by the study of Adam and the fall, not here - says His Lord CHOSE him, and relented toward him, and guided him.
The full narrative is carried in the study of Adam and the fall. What is here is the prayer, and the fact that the text says it was given.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:23, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

DIN 31635wallaḏīna kafarū wakaḏḏabū biʾāyātinā ʾūlāʾika ʾaṣḥābu n-nāri hum fīhā ḫālidūna
But as for those who disbelieve and reject Our signs-these are the inmates of the Fire-wherein they will remain forever."
But they who disbelieve, and deny Our revelations, such are rightful Peoples of the Fire. They will abide therein
But those who misbelieve, and call our signs lies, they are the fellows of the Fire, they shall dwell therein for aye
But they who shall not believe, and treat our signs as false-hoods, these shall be inmates of the fire; in it shall they remain for ever
but they who shall be unbelievers, and accuse our signs of falsehood, they shall be the companions of hell fire, therein shall they remain for ever
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:23, 2:37, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
