How does the Qur'an tell the story of Adam and the fall?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:30–34 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is one scene: I AM ABOUT TO PLACE A VICEROY IN THE EARTH - the angels object, WILT THOU PLACE THEREIN ONE WHO WILL DO HARM AND SHED BLOOD? - AND HE TAUGHT ADAM ALL THE NAMES - the angels cannot name them, Adam does - and then, PROSTRATE YOURSELVES BEFORE ADAM. THEY FELL PROSTRATE, ALL SAVE IBLIS. Carried whole because the objection, the naming and the prostration are one argument about what the creature is.
  2. 02 2:35–39 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the second scene and its turn is at its centre: dwell in the Garden, but come not near this tree - Satan caused them to deflect - THEN ADAM RECEIVED FROM HIS LORD WORDS, AND HE RELENTED TOWARD HIM - go down, all of you; BUT THERE COMETH UNTO YOU FROM ME A GUIDANCE, and whoso followeth My guidance, there shall no fear come upon them. 2:37 ALSO CARRIED by What is the supplication of Adam after the fall? with a different reason.
  3. 03 20:115–123 In as ONE PASSAGE because surah 20's telling is a single movement and its diagnosis is at the start: We made a covenant of old with Adam, BUT HE FORGOT, AND WE FOUND NO CONSTANCY IN HIM - the prostration and Iblis's refusal - the warning that Iblis is an enemy - the whisper of the tree of immortality - they ate, and their shame became apparent - THEN HIS LORD CHOSE HIM, AND RELENTED TOWARD HIM, AND GUIDED HIM. Carried because it names the failure as forgetting rather than defiance, and because 20:122 is the fullest statement of the restoration.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Two tellings, and both end in the same place. A reader who comes to this story expecting a doctrine of inherited guilt will not find one in either.

Surah 2 begins before Adam exists, with an objection. God announces a viceroy on the earth, and the angels ask: will You place there one who will work corruption and shed blood, while we glorify You? The question is not answered directly. Instead, ADAM IS TAUGHT THE NAMES, the angels are asked for them and cannot give them, and Adam names them. Then the prostration is commanded, and all prostrate except Iblis.

So the case for the creature is made by capacity rather than by innocence. The angels' objection is never refuted - the text lets it stand - and what is set against it is that this one can name things.

Then the Garden, the prohibition, the deflection, and the descent. And at the centre of it, 2:37: THEN ADAM RECEIVED FROM HIS LORD WORDS, AND HE RELENTED TOWARD HIM.

That verse comes BEFORE the going down, not after a long estrangement. The forgiveness is granted in the middle of the episode, and the words to ask with are given. And when the descent is pronounced at 2:38, it comes with a promise attached: there shall come to you guidance, and whoever follows it shall have no fear.

Surah 20 tells it more briefly and adds the diagnosis. 20:115: We made a covenant with Adam, BUT HE FORGOT, AND WE FOUND NO FIRM RESOLVE IN HIM. The failure is named as forgetfulness and weakness of purpose - not rebellion, which is the word used of Iblis two verses later. The distinction is in the text.

And 20:122 closes it in three verbs: THEN HIS LORD CHOSE HIM, AND RELENTED TOWARD HIM, AND GUIDED HIM. Chosen, forgiven, guided - after the fall, and because of nothing he did to earn it.

What the text does not contain, in either telling: any suggestion that the wrong passes to his descendants, any curse on the ground or on childbirth, and any need for the fall to be undone. What it contains instead is a man who forgot, was given words, and was chosen.

Why Iblis refused is a separate question, and the study Why did Iblis refuse to bow to Adam? takes it up. What this one records is that the story of the fall in this book is also, in the same passage, the story of the first forgiveness.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:30–34, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

2:30 A kada Gospodar tvoj reče melecima: "Ja ću na Zemlji nasljednika – halifu postaviti!" oni upitaše: "Zar ćeš na Zemlji postaviti onoga koji će na njoj nered širiti i krv prolijevati?! A mi Tebe veličamo hvalom i kako Tebi dolikuje štujemo." On reče: "Ja, doista, znam ono što vi ne znate."

2:31 I pouči On Adama nazivima svih stvari, a onda ih predoči melecima i reče: "Kažite Mi nazive njihove, ako istinu govorite!"

2:32 "Uzvišen si," rekoše oni, "mi znamo samo ono čemu si nas Ti poučio! Zasigurno si Ti Sveznajući i Mudri."

2:33 "O Adame," reče On, "kaži im nazive njihove!"

Dissero: «Stabilisci in essa chi porterà corruzione e spargerà sangue, mentre noi Ti lodiamo e Ti osanniamo?» Disse: «Io so quello che voi non sapete!»

20:118 Aty nuk do të jesh i uritur e as i zhveshur

Kur t'ju vijë udhëzimi nga Unë, ai që do ta ndjekë udhëzimin Tim, as do të humbasë e as do ta zërë mjerimi.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:30-34, 2:35-39, 20:115-123, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.

What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 7:11 - 7:11-25 not carried: surah 7's telling adds the detail of the garments of leaves and Iblis's oath, but it duplicates the structure of the two arcs already carried, and the frame instructed against dumping the whole corpus.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
