And you surely knew those of you who violated the Sabbath. We said to them, "Be despicable apes!"
Does the Qur'an sanction antisemitism?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:65 The first of the three, addressed to those who broke the Sabbath. All five renderings carry apes; only Palmer and Pickthall carry despised, where Sale has driven away from the society of men, Rodwell has scouted and Itani has despicable. The version signed when four translations were cleared said all four carried despised, and that was wrong when it was signed. None of the five says who is being addressed beyond the act.
- 02 5:60 The only verse in the corpus that has both apes and swine, and it places them inside a longer list of those cursed. In because the phrase the question quotes occurs here and nowhere else. The five part company on the last group named - Taghut in Palmer and Sale, Thagout in Rodwell, idols in Pickthall, idol worshipers in Itani - and Itani alone places that group inside the list of what the cursed were turned into. The widest-divergence verse in this set on both measures, at 0.63; it stood in band 4 when signed over four and stands in band 3 over five, on a score that barely moved.
- 03 7:166 The third, again on the Sabbath transgression, and not quite in the same words: despised in Palmer, Sale and Pickthall, scouted in Rodwell, despicable in Itani, with loathed in Pickthall beside despised. Included as the third instance rather than as a separate claim - the question is about a phrase, and this is where the phrase falls.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase is in the text. Measured over all five cleared renderings, apes appears at exactly three verses in the whole corpus and nowhere else: 2:65 and 7:166 on those who broke the Sabbath, and 5:60, the only verse in the corpus with both apes and swine, inside a longer description of those cursed. All five carry apes at all three, and all five carry swine at 5:60.
What they do not agree on is the words around them, and the version of this study signed on 2026-09-05 was tidier about that than the four renderings it had. At 2:65 Palmer has apes, despised and spurned; Pickthall has apes, despised and hated; Sale has apes, driven away from the society of men; Rodwell has scouted apes; and Itani, read now, has despicable apes. Only two of the four renderings it was signed over carry despised at that verse, where the study said all four did. THAT CORRECTION IS OWED TO THE READER AND DOES NOT DEPEND ON ITANI. At 7:166 three of those four carry despised - Palmer, Sale and Pickthall - Rodwell again has scouted, and Itani again has despicable.
At 5:60 the five part company on the last group named, and Itani parts from the other four on where in the sentence that group sits. Palmer and Sale have who worship Taghut, Rodwell has who worship Thagout, Pickthall has who serveth idols - four spellings or renderings of one term, standing as a description of a further group. Itani writes He turned some of them into apes, and swine, and idol worshipers, which puts the same term inside the list of what the cursed were turned into rather than beside it. Whether those are two readings of one sentence or one reading in different words is a question about the Arabic, and it is the interpretation layer.
What the verses do not do is what the question asks about. In all five renderings the address at 2:65 and 7:166 is to a specific group described by an act - those who transgressed the Sabbath - not to a people as such, and 5:60 places the phrase inside a list of the cursed rather than as a name for anyone.
Whether that reading holds, and who the verses were spoken to, is exactly the interpretation layer, and it is blocked on rights. This study will not supply the answer, and a reader should not take the absence of one as agreement with either side.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:65, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 2:65, 5:60, 7:166, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles what these verses say. What changed: Itani writes despicable apes at 2:65 and 7:166, a fifth wording of the epithet; and at 5:60 he alone places the fourth group - idol worshipers - inside the list of what the cursed were turned into rather than beside it as a separate description. AND A CORRECTION IS MADE THAT DOES NOT DEPEND ON ITANI. The version signed when four translations were cleared stated, in its anchor reason at 2:65, that all four of them carry apes and despised at that verse. Measured on 2026-09-08, despised is at 2:65 in Palmer and Pickthall only: Sale writes driven away from the society of men and Rodwell writes scouted. THAT WAS WRONG WHEN IT WAS SIGNED; it was found by reading every verse against every rendering, which this re-check over five translations required, and it is corrected in the synthesis and in the anchor reason. The synthesis also now states two measurements rather than asserting them: apes appears at exactly three verses in the whole corpus, and 5:60 is the only verse in the corpus carrying both apes and swine. The divergence figures below are restated on the five-based measure, and 5:60 moves down a band. What did not change: the verse set, the reasons per verse other than the three noted below, and the finding that the address is to a group described by an act rather than to a people as such.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over all four renderings, returned in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and verses matched in all four were carried forward. THE TERMS OF THAT SEARCH WERE NOT RECORDED IN THE SIGNED STUDY and cannot be recovered, so neither the search nor its all-four qualifying rule has been re-run; what follows is a fresh probe, recorded in full, whose results were read but from which nothing was taken. The re-check over five translations added and removed no verse. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose.
PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared named no search terms; this re-check over five translations records its own. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["apes"] - 3 verses in the whole corpus, reaching all three anchors and in all five renderings at every one; ["swine"] - 5, reaching one; ["apes","swine"] - 1, reaching one; ["sabbath"] - 5, reaching one; ["despised"] - 19, reaching two; ["despicable"] - 10, reaching two; ["scouted"] - 2, reaching two; ["spurned"] - 2, reaching two; ["loathed"] - 1, reaching one; ["taghut"] - 8, ["thagout"] - 7, ["idols"] - 59 and ["idol"] - 5, each reaching one; ["pigs"] - 1, reaching none. Union 101 verses, of which 98 are not anchors of this study. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it: the set was confirmed by the Editor, not by the union. Five results are recorded because they bear on the finding. "apes" RETURNS EXACTLY THREE VERSES IN THE WHOLE CORPUS, and they are this study's three anchors, in all five renderings at every one - so the study's set is the whole of the corpus on its own word. ["apes","swine"] returns exactly one verse, 5:60, which is the measurement behind the claim that it is the only verse with both. "despised" reaches 2:65 in Palmer and Pickthall alone and 7:166 in Palmer, Sale and Pickthall, which is the measurement that withdraws the all-four claim above. "scouted" returns two verses in the whole corpus, 2:65 and 7:166, and in Rodwell alone at both; "despicable" reaches those same two anchors in Itani alone; "spurned" reaches them in Palmer alone; "loathed" returns one verse, 7:166, in Pickthall alone. And at 5:60 the last group named is reached by four different probes in four different renderings - "taghut" in Palmer and Sale, "thagout" in Rodwell, "idols" in Pickthall, "idol" in Itani - which is one term rendered five ways and is recorded here rather than reconciled. THE WORD IN THIS STUDY'S OWN SLUG IS NOT THE CORPUS'S WORD: ["pigs"] returns one verse and reaches none of these three; every rendering here writes swine.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 2 at 2:65 (0.57), where the five stand closest, to band 3 at 5:60 (0.63), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared named the same two verses at 0.56 and 0.63, but put 5:60 in band 4. The verse did not become less divergent - its score is 0.63 on both measures - and the band beneath it moved because the corpus was rescored over five renderings and the quintile cut moved with it. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
