He who made the earth a habitat for you, and the sky a structure, and sends water down from the sky, and brings out fruits thereby, as a sustenance for you. Therefore, do not assign rivals to God while you know.
Does the Qur'an say the earth is flat?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:22 Says the earth was appointed a bed, a resting place or a habitat, and the sky a canopy. The plainest of the spreading statements, and the one the question is most often put about. The five do not use one word for it: bed in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, resting-place in Pickthall, habitat in Itani.
- 02 13:3 Has the earth stretched out with firm mountains and rivers set in it. In because the same verse that says stretched also says what was placed on it. The verse where the five stand closest, band 2 of 5; the version signed when four translations were cleared named 20:53 there. Stretched in Palmer and Sale, outstretched in Rodwell, spread in Pickthall and Itani.
- 03 15:19 Spread out, with mountains thrown on it and every thing grown in measure. Included as the second of the two spreading statements rather than as a separate claim. The widest-divergence verse in this set, band 5 of 5 on the five-based measure, where the version signed when four translations were cleared put it in band 4. Itani alone calls the mountains stabilizers.
- 04 20:53 Makes the earth a bed and traces paths through it. In because the paths are the clearest sign in the set that what is described is somewhere travelled and lived on. All four renderings this study was signed over write bed here; Itani writes habitat.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The word "flat" does not appear at any of these verses in any of the five renderings. What they say is that the earth was spread out, stretched out, and made a bed, a resting place or a habitat, with mountains set in it and paths traced through it (2:22, 13:3, 15:19, 20:53).
Itani is the fifth rendering, and at 2:22 and 20:53 he writes habitat where the other four write bed or resting-place. Measured over the whole corpus on 2026-09-08, habitat appears at four verses and in Itani alone at every one; at 15:19 he calls the mountains stabilizers, and that word too is his alone at all four verses where it appears. His word names in one term the reading this study makes of the other four - a place made fit to live in - and it is recorded here as a fifth rendering, not as evidence for that reading. A translator who writes habitat has not established what the other four mean, and being the most recent of the five is not a reason to be believed over them.
That is the language of a place made habitable, not a statement of its shape - it is what a bed is for, not what a bed is. Whether it carries any claim about geometry is a question about how the Arabic is read, and that is the interpretation layer.
The word the question asks about is absent from these verses but not from the corpus. Measured across all five cleared renderings, flat appears at exactly one verse, 67:15, and in Palmer alone - He it is who made the earth flat for you - where Sale has levelled, Rodwell level, Pickthall subservient and Itani manageable. 67:15 is not carried by this study and is not among the verses it records as confirmed out. Whether it belongs here is an editorial act, and this re-check over five translations records it rather than takes it.
Two verses here matched only on wording and do not bear on the question: 5:64 is about hands outspread in bounty, and 13:18 calls hell a couch.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:22, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

И Он је Тај Који је распростро Земљу и на њој створио стабилне планине и реке и од сваког плода дао по пар, мушко и женско; Он дан застире ноћу. У томе, заиста, има доказа за људе који размишљају.

On earth are adjacent terrains, and gardens of vines, and crops, and date-palms, from the same root or from distinct roots, irrigated with the same water. We make some taste better than others. In that are proofs for people who reason.
And in the Earth are neighbouring tracts, vineyards and ploughed lands, and date-palms, like and unlike, which are watered with one water. And we have made some of them to excel others in fruit. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who have sense
And on the earth are neighbouring portions, and gardens of grapes and corn and palms growing together (from one root) and not growing together; they are watered with one water, yet we distinguish one over the other as food;- verily, in that are signs unto a people who have sense
And on the earth hard by each other are its various portions: gardens of grapes and corn, and palm trees single or clustered. Though watered by the same water, yet some make we more excellent as food than other: Verily in all this are signs for those who understand
And in the earth are tracts of land of different natures, though bordering on each other; and also vineyards, and seeds, and palm-trees springing several from the same root, and singly from distinct roots. They are watered with the same water, yet We render some of them more excellent than others to eat. Herein are surely signs unto people who understand

Should you wonder-the real wonder is their saying: "When we have become dust, will we be in a new creation?" Those are they who defied their Lord. Those are they who will have yokes around their necks. Those are the inhabitants of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
And if thou wonderest, then wondrous is their saying: When we are dust, are we then forsooth (to be raised) in a new creation? Such are they who disbelieve in their Lord; such have carcans on their necks; such are rightful owners of the Fire, they will abide therein
And if thou shouldst wonder, wondrous is their speech: 'What! when we have become dust, shall we really then be created anew?' These are they who disbelieve in their Lord, and these are they with fetters round their necks, and these are the fellows of the Fire; they shall dwell therein for aye
If ever thou dost marvel, marvellous surely is their saying, "What! when we have become dust, shall we be restored in a new creation?" These are they who in their Lord believe not: these! the collars shall be on their necks; and these shall be inmates of the fire, to abide therein for aye
If thou dost wonder at the infidels denying the resurrection, surely wonderful is their saying, after We shall have been reduced to dust, shall We be restored in a new creature? 20:53 — the verse above

Eat and pasture your livestock. In that are signs for those with understanding.
(Saying): Eat ye and feed your cattle. Lo! herein verily are portents for men of thought
Eat and pasture your cattle therefrom; verily, in that are signs to those endued with intelligence
Eat ye, and feed your cattle.' Of a truth in this are signs unto men endued with understanding
saying, eat of part, and feed your cattle with other part thereof. Verily herein are signs unto those who are indued with understanding

Out of the ground have we created you; and to the same will we cause you to return, and we will bring you forth from thence another time
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 2:22, 13:3, 15:19, 20:53, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles what these verses describe. What changed: at 2:22 and 20:53 Itani writes habitat where the other four write bed or resting-place, and at 15:19 he calls the mountains stabilizers where Palmer has firm mountains, Sale stable mountains, Pickthall firm hills and Rodwell simply the mountains - two words that are his alone everywhere they appear in the corpus. THE FIRST OF THEM AGREES WITH THIS STUDY'S OWN READING AND IS NOT USED AS EVIDENCE FOR IT: a fifth translator who arrives at the same reading has not proved it, and the reading stands or falls on the four renderings it was made from. The synthesis also now records a measurement the version signed when four translations were cleared did not make - that flat, the word this study's question asks about, appears at exactly one verse in the whole corpus, 67:15, in Palmer alone, at a verse this study neither carries nor names. The divergence figures below are restated on the five-based measure, and the closest verse in the set changes. What did not change: the verse set, the finding this study turns on, and the reasons per verse other than the four noted below.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set began as a word search over the four renderings that had cleared the rights audit at the time, run in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and was then confirmed by the Editor. THE TERMS OF THAT SEARCH WERE NOT RECORDED IN THE SIGNED STUDY and cannot be recovered, so it has not been re-run; what follows is a fresh probe, recorded in full, whose results were read but from which nothing was taken. Verses matching the search on wording alone were proposed for removal and confirmed out: 5:64 - Matched because outstretched appears. It is about God's hands being spread wide in bounty against the claim that they are fettered, and says nothing about the earth.; 13:18 - Matched because couch appears. It calls hell an evil couch for those who did not answer their Lord, and says nothing about the earth. The re-check over five translations added and removed no verse. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose.
PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared named no search terms; this re-check over five translations records its own. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["earth","spread"] - 26 verses, reaching all four anchors and in all five renderings at every one; ["spread"] - 47, reaching all four; ["bed"] - 11, reaching two; ["stretched"] - 8, reaching two; ["outstretched"] - 7, reaching one; ["resting"] - 18, reaching one; ["habitat"] - 4, reaching two; ["stabilizers"] - 4, reaching one; ["flat"] - 1, ["couch"] - 11, ["carpet"] - 2 and ["expanse"] - 3, reaching none. Union 80 verses, of which 76 are not anchors of this study. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it: the set was confirmed by the Editor, not by the union. Four results are recorded because they bear on the finding. "flat", the word in this study's own question, returns exactly one verse in the whole corpus - 67:15, in Palmer alone, where Sale has levelled, Rodwell level, Pickthall subservient and Itani manageable. "habitat" returns four verses - 2:22, 20:53, 40:64 and 43:10 - and every one of them is Itani alone. "stabilizers" returns four verses - 15:19, 21:31, 31:10 and 41:10 - again Itani alone at every one. And "bed" reaches 20:53 in all four of the renderings this study was signed over and not in Itani, so a sentence saying these verses make the earth a bed no longer covers every rendering of that verse. Two verses the probe surfaced are recorded for the Editor rather than acted on: 67:15, above; and 43:10 - who made for you the earth a couch and placed for you therein roads - which stands to 20:53 as a near-repetition and which this study neither carries nor names among the verses confirmed out. Whether either belongs here is an editorial act and was not taken in a re-check over five translations.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 2 at 13:3 (0.53), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 15:19 (0.70), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared named different endpoints: 20:53 closest at 0.53, and 15:19 furthest at 0.65 in band 4. The furthest verse is the same one and has moved up a band, 4 to 5, on a score that rose from 0.65 to 0.70. The closest verse is now 13:3 at 0.53, where 20:53 stands at 0.58: the two have changed places inside band 2. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
