And the mountains pegs?
What does the Qur'an say about the mountains as 'pegs'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 78:7 And the high hills bulwarks? In because it is THE verse the question is about - the one where Sale and Rodwell write stakes, and where the peg image comes from - and because it is three words long inside a list of rhetorical questions.
- 02 16:15 And He hath cast into the earth firm hills THAT IT QUAKE NOT WITH YOU, and streams and roads that ye may find a way. In because it states the stated purpose - that the earth not shake with you - and puts the hills beside rivers and roads as things that make the land usable.
- 03 21:31 And We have placed in the earth firm hills lest it quake with them, and We have placed therein ravines as roads that haply they may find their way. In because it repeats the same purpose clause in a different surah, which makes it the text's settled account rather than a single remark.
- 04 31:10 He hath created the heavens without supports that ye can see, and hath cast into the earth firm hills so that it quake not with you. In because it sets the unsupported heaven and the anchored earth in one sentence.
- 05 15:19 And the earth have We spread out, and placed therein firm hills, and caused each seemly thing to grow therein. In because it gives the sequence - spread, then anchored, then made to grow - which is the shape most of these verses follow.
- 06 79:32 And He made fast the hills. In because it is the barest statement of the same act, in a passage of short clauses about the making of the world.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The peg is one word in one verse, and everything else in this study is about a purpose.
78:7 is the verse the question comes from, and it is barely a verse: and the high hills - stakes? bulwarks? pegs? Sale and Palmer write stakes, Rodwell tent-stakes, Itani pegs and Pickthall bulwarks. It sits in a run of short rhetorical questions - have We not made the earth a bed, and the mountains stakes? - and it is not explained.
The explanation, such as it is, comes from four other verses that use a different word and give a reason. 16:15, 21:31 and 31:10 all say God cast firm hills into the earth THAT IT QUAKE NOT WITH YOU. That clause is the text's own account of what mountains are for, it is repeated in three separate surahs, and it is far more common than the peg image.
15:19 and 79:32 give the same act without the reason - the earth spread out, the hills set fast.
Two things a reader should be told. The peg reading is often presented as an anticipation of isostasy or of mountain roots extending into the crust. That is an argument from outside the text; the verse says stakes and stops, and the verses that do explain say the purpose is that the earth should not shake WITH YOU - a statement about the ground being steady underfoot.
And the same book says the mountains will fly like clouds and move away (27:88, 52:10). Those verses are dropped from this study because they belong to the Day rather than to the making, but a reader who takes the fixity verses as physics should know the text does not treat the fixing as permanent.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 78:7, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Do the disbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were one mass, and We tore them apart? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not believe?
Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were of one piece, then We parted them, and we made every living thing of water? Will they not then believe
Do not those who misbelieve see that the heavens and the earth were both solid, and we burst them asunder; and we made from water every living thing - will they then not believe
Do not the infidels see that the heavens and the earth were both a solid mass, and that we clave them asunder, and that by means of water we give life to everything? Will they not then believe
Do not the unbelievers therefore know, that the heavens and the earth were solid, and We clave the same in sunder; and made every living thing of water? Will they not therefore believe

And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise
We did give unto Loqman wisdom, saying, 'Thank God; for he who thanks God is only thankful for his own soul; and he who is ungrateful - verily, God is independent, worthy of praise
Of old we bestowed wisdom upon LOKMAN, and taught him thus - "Be thankful to God: for whoever is thankful, is thankful to his own behoof; and if any shall be thankless . . . God truly is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise
We heretofore bestowed wisdom on Lokman, and commanded him, saying, be thou thankful unto God: For whoever is thankful, shall be thankful to the advantage of his own soul; and if any shall be unthankful, verily God is self-sufficient, and worthy to be praised

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 78:7, 16:15, 21:31, 31:10, 15:19, 79:32, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - mountains + stakes; mountains + pegs; mountains + firmly; firm + mountains; mountains + lest + shake; mountains + move + with; mountains + anchors. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 8 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 13:3; 27:61; 41:10; 50:7; 77:27; 14:46; 27:88; 52:10. The reason for each was not recorded.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim that the image of a tent peg comes from the Arabic term was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it; the translators' words are now given as they appear on the page. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
