When you have completed your rites, remember God as you remember your parents, or even more. Among the people is he who says, "Our Lord, give us in this world," yet he has no share in the Hereafter.
'Our Lord, give us good in this world and the next' - where is it, and what does it ask?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:200 CARRIED AS THE FOIL, and the study does not work without it: when ye have completed your devotions, remember Allah as ye remember your fathers, or more - BUT OF MANKIND IS HE WHO SAITH: OUR LORD! GIVE UNTO US IN THE WORLD - AND HE HATH NO PORTION IN THE HEREAFTER. This is here because the famous prayer at 2:201 is explicitly set against this one, in the verse immediately before it.
- 02 2:201 AND OF THEM ALSO IS HE WHO SAITH: OUR LORD! GIVE UNTO US IN THE WORLD THAT WHICH IS GOOD AND IN THE HEREAFTER THAT WHICH IS GOOD, AND GUARD US FROM THE DOOM OF FIRE. Carried whole because the three clauses are the prayer, and because the phrase and of them ALSO ties it to the verse before.
- 03 2:202 FOR THEM THERE IS IN STORE A GOODLY PORTION OUT OF THAT WHICH THEY HAVE EARNED. Allah is swift at reckoning. This is here because it is the verdict on the second prayer and completes the comparison.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
It is the most-prayed sentence in the book after the Opening, and almost nobody meets it where it lives - in the middle of the pilgrimage rites, as the second half of a comparison.
2:200 sets it up. After completing the rites, remember God as you remember your fathers, or more. And then: OF MANKIND IS HE WHO SAITH - OUR LORD! GIVE UNTO US IN THE WORLD. And the verse's own comment: AND HE HATH NO PORTION IN THE HEREAFTER.
That is the first prayer, and it is not condemned for being greedy. It is a perfectly ordinary request. What the text says about it is that it gets what it asks for and nothing else. It is a complete prayer with a narrow scope, and the scope is what determines the outcome.
Then 2:201: AND OF THEM ALSO is he who says - OUR LORD! GIVE UNTO US IN THE WORLD THAT WHICH IS GOOD AND IN THE HEREAFTER THAT WHICH IS GOOD, AND GUARD US FROM THE DOOM OF FIRE.
Three clauses. It does not renounce this world. It asks for good in it, plainly, and then asks for good in the next as well, and then for protection. The and of them ALSO in the opening is what makes the comparison work: same crowd, same moment, different scope.
2:202 gives the verdict on the second: for them is a portion of what they have earned.
So what the prayer asks for is not piety in place of worldly good. It asks for both, and the verse before it shows what asking for only one looks like. The contrast is not between the material and the spiritual. It is between a request that stops at the near horizon and one that does not.
Read in that setting, the sentence people repeat after prayers and at the end of gatherings turns out to be the text's own worked example of praying with the wider scope - and it is given immediately after the narrower version, so that the difference can be seen.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: no source has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read them: no has cleared it either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:200, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And when ye have finished your holy rites, remember God as ye remember your own fathers, or with a yet more intense remembrance! Some men there are who say, "O our Lord! give us our portion in this world:" but such shall have no portion in the next life

You commit no error by seeking bounty from your Lord. When you disperse from Arafat, remember God at the Sacred Landmark. And remember Him as He has guided you. Although, before that, you were of those astray.
It is no sin for you that ye seek the bounty of your Lord (by trading). But, when ye press on in the multitude from 'Arafat, remember Allah by the sacred monument. Remember Him as He hath guided you, although before ye were of those astray
It is no crime to you that ye seek good from your Lord; but when ye pour forth from 'Arafat, remember God by the sacred beacon. Remember Him how He guided you, although ye were surely before of those who err
It shall be no crime in you if ye seek an increase from your Lord; and when ye pour swiftly on from Arafat, then remember God near the holy monument; and remember Him, because He hath guided you who before this were of those who went astray

And when ye have completed your devotions, then remember Allah as ye remember your fathers or with a more lively remembrance. But of mankind is he who saith: "Our Lord! Give unto us in the world," and he hath no portion in the Hereafter
And when ye have performed your rites, remember God as ye remember your fathers, or with a keener memory still. There is among men such as says, 'Our Lord! give us in this world;' but of the future life no portion shall he have
And when ye have finished your holy rites, remember God as ye remember your own fathers, or with a yet more intense remembrance! Some men there are who say, "O our Lord! give us our portion in this world:" but such shall have no portion in the next life
And when ye have finished your holy ceremonies, remember God, according as ye remember your fathers, or with a more reverend commemoration. There are some men who say, O Lord, give us our portion in this world; but such shall have no portion in the next life

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:200, 2:201, 2:202, in full, and nothing else. No , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set is the Editor's anchor frame, supplied by the board before the build, and NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference the board proposed was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim the frame made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is printed per verse in the staging file and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
