What does the Qur'an say about the Queen of Sheba?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 27:22–24 The hoopoe said: I have found out a thing that thou apprehendest not... LO, I FOUND A WOMAN RULING OVER THEM, AND SHE HATH BEEN GIVEN ABUNDANCE OF ALL THINGS, AND HERS IS A MIGHTY THRONE. I found her and her people worshipping the sun instead of God. In as ONE PASSAGE because the report is the bird's and its terms are entirely descriptive - the objection raised is the sun-worship, not the ruler's sex.
  2. 02 27:29–35 She said: O CHIEFTAINS, LO, THERE HATH BEEN THROWN UNTO ME A NOBLE LETTER... O chieftains, PRONOUNCE FOR ME IN MY CASE. I DECIDE NO CASE TILL YE ARE PRESENT WITH ME. They said: we are lords of might and lords of great prowess, but it is for thee to command... She said: LO, KINGS, WHEN THEY ENTER A TOWNSHIP, RUIN IT AND MAKE THE HONOUR OF ITS PEOPLE SHAME. Thus will they do. But lo, I am going to send a present unto them. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the Qur'an's fullest depiction of a ruler taking counsel, and because her judgment about what invading kings do is left standing by the text.
  3. 03 27:42–44 So, when she came, it was said unto her: IS THY THRONE LIKE THIS? She said: IT IS AS THOUGH IT WERE THE VERY ONE... It was said unto her: enter the hall. And when she saw it she deemed it a pool and bared her legs. He said: LO, IT IS A HALL MADE SMOOTH OF GLASS. She said: MY LORD, LO, I HAVE WRONGED MYSELF, AND I SURRENDER WITH SOLOMON UNTO GOD, THE LORD OF THE WORLDS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the two tests and her declaration are one scene, and the declaration is hers alone.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an tells this in one continuous passage in surah 27, and its treatment of the queen is notably respectful.

The hoopoe's report at 27:23 is purely descriptive: I FOUND A WOMAN RULING OVER THEM, AND SHE HATH BEEN GIVEN ABUNDANCE OF ALL THINGS, AND HERS IS A MIGHTY THRONE. Her rule is stated as a fact and no objection is raised to it. What the bird objects to, in the next verse, is that she and her people worship the sun.

27:29-35 shows her governing, and the text lets her do it well. She summons her chiefs, calls the letter A NOBLE LETTER, and says: PRONOUNCE FOR ME IN MY CASE; I DECIDE NO CASE TILL YE ARE PRESENT WITH ME. Her council defers to her - it is for thee to command - and she makes her own decision.

Her reasoning at 27:34 is the sharpest political observation in the Qur'an: KINGS, WHEN THEY ENTER A TOWNSHIP, RUIN IT AND MAKE THE HONOUR OF ITS PEOPLE SHAME. THUS WILL THEY DO. The text does not contradict her. She sends a gift instead of an army, which is a strategy and a test.

The ending is hers. Shown her own throne altered, she answers carefully - IT IS AS THOUGH IT WERE THE VERY ONE. Shown the glass floor and mistaking it for water, she is told what it is. And then, in her own words and without prompting: MY LORD, I HAVE WRONGED MYSELF, AND I SURRENDER WITH SOLOMON UNTO GOD, THE LORD OF THE WORLDS.

The Qur'an does not name her, does not marry her to Solomon, and does not comment on a woman ruling. All of that is later story literature, and none has cleared the rights audit.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 27:22–24, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

27:44 Hon ombads: ”Stig in på palatsets gård.” När hon såg den tog hon den för en bassäng med vatten, så hon blottade sina ben [för att kliva i]. [Salomo] sa: ”Gården är belagd med glas.” Hon sa: ”Herre! Jag har verkligen gjort mig själv orätt, och likt Salomo underkastar jag mig nu Gud, världarnas Herre.”

Talal Itani2012 He who had knowledge from the Book said, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when he saw it settled before him, he said, "This is from the grace of my Lord, to test me, whether I am grateful or ungrateful. He who is grateful, his gratitude is to his own credit; but he who is ungrateful-my Lord is Independent and Generous."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: I will bring it thee before thy gaze returneth unto thee. And when he saw it set in his presence, (Solomon) said: This is of the bounty of my Lord, that He may try me whether I give thanks or am ungrateful. Whosoever giveth thanks he only giveth thanks for (the good of) his own soul; and whosoever is ungrateful (is ungrateful only to his own soul's hurt). For lo! my Lord is Absolute in independence, Bountiful

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He who had the knowledge of the Book said, 'I will bring it to thee before thy glance can turn.' And when he saw it settled down beside him, he said, 'This is of my Lords grace, that He may try me whether I am grateful or ungrateful, and he who is grateful is only grateful for his own soul, and he who is ungrateful,- verily, my Lord is rich and generous

John Medows Rodwell1861 And one who had the knowledge of Scripture said, "I will bring it to thee in the twinkling of an eye." And when he saw it set before him, he said, "This is of the favour of my Lord, to try me whether I will be thankful or unthankful. And he who is thankful is thankful to his own behoof; and as for him who is unthankful - truly my Lord is self-sufficient, bounteous

George Sale1734 And one with whom was the knowledge of the scriptures said, I will bring it unto thee, in the twinkling of an eye. And when Solomon saw the throne placed before him, he said, this is a favour of my Lord, that he may make trial of me, whether I will be grateful, or whether I will be ungrateful: And he who is grateful, is grateful to his own advantage, but if any shall be ungrateful, verily my Lord is self-sufficient and munificent

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 27:22-24, 27:29-35, 27:42-44, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - a + woman + ruling + over + them; she + hath + been + given + abundance; throne + of + mighty + sovereignty; o + chieftains + pronounce + for + me + in + my + case; glass + she + bared + her + legs. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
