Does the Qur'an say the sun sets in a muddy spring?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 18:83–90 The whole Dhul-Qarnayn passage: they ask thee of him; We made him strong in the land and gave him a road to everything; he followed a road till he reached the setting-place of the sun and FOUND IT setting in a muddy spring and found a people thereabout ... then he followed a road till he reached the rising-place of the sun and found it rising on a people for whom We had appointed no shelter. These verses are one journey: he follows a road to the setting of the sun, and then another to its rising, and in both the translations say what he found. 18:86 is not read here without 18:90.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Read the verse alone and the question looks strong. Read the passage and it changes shape, which is why this study is built as a range and not as 18:86.

The passage is a journey. Dhul-Qarnayn is given a road to everything, and he takes two of them. He goes west until he reaches the setting-place of the sun, and there he FINDS it setting in a muddy spring, and finds a people. Then he goes east until he reaches the rising-place of the sun, and there he finds it rising on a people who have no shelter from it.

The structure is the argument. 18:90 stands to sunrise exactly as 18:86 stands to sunset, and nobody claims the Qur'an teaches that the sun emerges from a hole in the east. The two verses are the two ends of one itinerary, told in the same words.

The verb matters too and survives all four renderings: he FOUND it setting there. Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall all report what the traveller came upon, not what the narrator asserts about astronomy. The sentence describes the far edge of a journey - a place where the sun goes down over water - which is what any coastline looks like.

What this study will not do is claim more than that. It does not assert that the passage is a report of the observer's perspective and therefore scientifically unobjectionable; that is a reading, and a common apologetic one. It shows the range and lets the range do the work. Whether the passage is geography, hagiography, or something else, and who Dhul-Qarnayn was taken to be, are questions for the academic-historical layer, which is not built - and for , which has not cleared the rights audit.

The reader's takeaway is narrow and defensible: the verse most often quoted on its own is one half of a matched pair, and its partner is four verses later.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 18:83–90.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 1 passages, each with every cleared translation

1 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

18:85 I on je slijedio put.

Talal Itani2012 So we wanted their Lord to replace him with someone better in purity, and closer to mercy.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And we intended that their Lord should change him for them for one better in purity and nearer to mercy

Edward Henry Palmer1880 So we desired that their Lord would give them in exchange a better one than him in purity, and nearer in filial affection

John Medows Rodwell1861 And we desired that their Lord might give them in his place a child, better than he in virtue, and nearer to filial piety

George Sale1734 Wherefore we desired that their Lord might give them a more righteous child in exchange for him, and one more affectionate towards them

18:82

Talal Itani2012 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphaned boys in the town. Beneath it was a treasure that belonged to them. Their father was a righteous man. Your Lord wanted them to reach their maturity, and then extract their treasure-as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do it of my own accord. This is the interpretation of what you were unable to endure."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan youths in the city, and beneath it was a treasure belonging to them both, and their father was a righteous man, and their Lord desired that they should reach puberty, and then take out their treasure as a mercy from thy Lord; and I did it not on my own bidding. That is the interpretation of what thou couldst not have patience with

John Medows Rodwell1861 And as to the wall, it belonged to two orphan youths in the city, and beneath it was their treasure: and their father was a righteous man: and thy Lord desired that they should reach the age of strength, and take forth their treasure through the mercy of thy Lord. And not of mine own will have I done this. This is the interpretation of that which thou couldst not bear with patience

George Sale1734 And the wall belonged to two orphan youths in the city, and under it was a treasure hidden which belonged to them; and their father was a righteous man: And thy Lord was pleased that they should attain their full age, and take forth their treasure, through the mercy of thy Lord. And I did not what thou hast seen of mine own will, but by God's direction. This is the interpretation of that which thou couldest not bear with patience

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:83-90, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 18:83-90, a claim that the single-verse reading conceals the passage was removed; what the verses share, that he found the sun setting and then rising, is on the page. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
