And they ask you about Zul-Qarnain. Say, "I will tell you something about him."
Who is Dhul-Qarnayn in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 18:83–85 THEY WILL ASK THEE OF DHU'L-QARNEYN. Say: I shall recite unto you a remembrance of him. Lo, WE MADE HIM STRONG IN THE LAND AND GAVE HIM UNTO EVERY THING A ROAD. And he followed a road. In as ONE PASSAGE because the passage opens as an ANSWER TO A QUESTION - somebody asked - and because what he is given is described in the vaguest possible terms.
- 02 18:86–88 Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn, EITHER PUNISH OR SHOW THEM KINDNESS. He said: AS FOR HIM WHO DOETH WRONG, WE SHALL PUNISH HIM... BUT AS FOR HIM WHO BELIEVETH AND DOETH RIGHT, GOOD WILL BE HIS REWARD, AND WE SHALL SPEAK UNTO HIM A MILD COMMAND. In as ONE PASSAGE because the choice offered and his answer are the only characterisation the text gives him. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an say the sun sets in a muddy spring?, with a different reason there.
- 03 18:92–96 Till, when he came between the two mountains, he found upon their hither side a folk that scarce could understand a saying. They said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn, lo, Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them? HE SAID: THAT WHEREIN MY LORD HATH ESTABLISHED ME IS BETTER. DO BUT HELP ME WITH STRENGTH OF MEN; I will set between you and them a bank. Give me pieces of iron. In as ONE PASSAGE because he REFUSES the payment and asks for labour instead, which is the most concrete thing said about his character.
- 04 18:98 He said: THIS IS A MERCY FROM MY LORD; BUT WHEN THE PROMISE OF MY LORD COMETH TO PASS, HE WILL LAY IT LOW, for the promise of my Lord is true. In because it is his last recorded speech and it attributes the achievement away from himself and puts a term on it. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about Gog and Magog?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an answers this question with a story and never says who he was.
18:83 opens as a reply: THEY WILL ASK THEE OF DHU'L-QARNEYN - somebody put the question, and the passage is the answer. What follows describes a journey, three encounters, and a man's conduct. It gives no nation, no date, no lineage, and no claim that he was a prophet.
What he is given is stated as vaguely as possible: WE MADE HIM STRONG IN THE LAND AND GAVE HIM UNTO EVERY THING A ROAD - access, means, a way to everything.
The characterisation is entirely in what he does with power.
At the west, offered a free hand - EITHER PUNISH OR SHOW THEM KINDNESS - he distinguishes: the wrongdoer will be punished, and to the one who believes and does right, GOOD WILL BE HIS REWARD, AND WE SHALL SPEAK UNTO HIM A MILD COMMAND.
At the two mountains, a people offer him TRIBUTE to build a barrier. He refuses it: THAT WHEREIN MY LORD HATH ESTABLISHED ME IS BETTER. DO BUT HELP ME WITH STRENGTH OF MEN. He takes labour, not payment.
And 18:98, his last words, decline the credit and set a term: THIS IS A MERCY FROM MY LORD - BUT WHEN THE PROMISE OF MY LORD COMETH TO PASS, HE WILL LAY IT LOW.
The identifications proposed for him - Alexander, a Persian or Himyarite king, and others - are historical arguments made from outside the text. The academic-historical layer is not built, and no has cleared the rights audit. The name itself, which all four translators keep as the two-horned one or transliterate, is not explained anywhere in the Qur'an.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 18:83–85, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

18:92 I on opet pođe.

I kad on izravna dvije strane brda, reče: “Pūšite!” A kad ga usija, reče: “Donesite mi rastopljen bakar da ga zalijem.”

18:96 96. Duokite man geležies gabalus (plytas).“ Tada, kai jis užpildė plyšį tarp dviejų kalnų skardžių, tarė: „Papūskite“. Tada, kai jis padarė juos (raudonus kaip) ugnimi, jis tarė: „Atneškite man išlydytą varį užpilti ant jų.“

18:92 Kisha akaifuata njia.
18:93 Hata alipofika katikati ya milima miwili, alikuta nyuma yake kaumu ambao walikaribia kutofahamu neno lolote.
18:94 Wakasema: Ewe Dhul-Qarnain!
18:96 “Bana (yeterince) demir madeni getirin” dedi. İki yamacın arasındaki boşluğu (dağlarla) bir hizaya getirince; “Körükleyin!” dedi. Demiri eritip kor (gibi) yapınca da; “Bana erimiş bakır getirin, bunun üzerine boşaltayım.” dedi.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:83-85, 18:86-88, 18:92-96, 18:98, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - dhu'l-qarneyn; they + will + ask + thee + of + dhu; we + made + him + strong + in + the + land; either + punish + or + show + them + kindness. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
