By the morning light.
What does Surah ad-Duha say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 93:1 By the morning hours. This is here because it opens the surah with an oath whose time of day the renderings do not share: "By the brightness of the morning" in Sale, "By the morning hours" in Pickthall and "By the morning light" in Itani, against "By the forenoon" in Palmer and "BY the noon-day BRIGHTNESS" in Rodwell.
- 02 93:2 And by the night when it is stillest. This is here because it is the second oath and the renderings divide over what is said of the night: "when it groweth dark" in Sale, "when it darkeneth" in Rodwell and "when it darkens" in Palmer, against "when it is stillest" in Pickthall and "as it settles" in Itani.
- 03 93:3 Thy Lord hath not forsaken thee nor doth He hate thee. This is here because it is what the surah denies, and the second half is worded three different ways: "neither doth He hate thee" in Sale and "nor doth He hate thee" in Pickthall, "neither hath he been displeased" in Rodwell, and "nor did He forget" in Itani.
- 04 93:4 And verily the latter portion will be better for thee than the former. This is here because it sets two things against each other that the renderings name differently: "the life to come" in Sale, "the Future" in Rodwell, "the hereafter" in Palmer, "the latter portion" in Pickthall and "The Hereafter" in Itani.
- 05 93:5 And verily thy Lord will give unto thee so that thou wilt be content. This is here because it promises a giving, and only Sale names what is given - "a reward wherewith thou shalt be well pleased" - where Pickthall has "so that thou wilt be content" and Itani "you will be satisfied"
- 06 93:6 Did He not find thee an orphan and protect (thee). This is here because it is the first of three questions about what was found, and what followed the finding is worded differently: "gave thee a home" in Rodwell, "give the shelter" in Palmer, "protect (thee)" in Pickthall with his own brackets, and "find you orphaned" in Itani.
- 07 93:7 Did He not find thee wandering and direct (thee). This is here because it is the second of the three, and Sale alone reads the finding as error and the response as truth: "wandering in error" and "guided thee into the truth", where Pickthall has "find thee wandering" and "direct (thee)".
- 08 93:8 Did He not find thee destitute and enrich (thee). This is here because it is the third of the three, and Palmer alone has "poor with a family" where Sale has "find thee needy", Pickthall "find thee destitute" and Itani "found you in need"; what follows is "nourish thee" in Palmer and "enrich (thee)" in Pickthall.
- 09 93:9 Therefor the orphan oppress not. This is here because it is the first of the three instructions the surah closes with, and it turns on the orphan of 93:6: "oppress not the orphan" in Sale, "wrong him not" in Rodwell, "oppress him not" in Palmer and "do not mistreat the orphan" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about caring for the poor and the orphan?, with a different reason there.
- 10 93:10 Therefor the beggar drive not away. This is here because it is the second instruction, and who is meant is worded differently: "the beggar" in Sale, Palmer and Pickthall, "him that asketh of thee" in Rodwell and "the seeker" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about self-reliance over begging?, with a different reason there.
- 11 93:11 Therefor of the bounty of thy Lord be thy discourse. This is here because it closes the surah with what is to be done with what was given: "declare the goodness of thy Lord" in Sale, "tell them abroad" in Rodwell, "discourse thereof" in Palmer, "be thy discourse" in Pickthall and "proclaim the blessings of your Lord" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah ad-Duha is eleven verses long. It opens with two oaths, turns to a person it addresses throughout as "thee" or "you" and does not name, tells that person what has already been done for them, and closes with three instructions.
The two oaths are at 93:1-2, and the renderings do not agree on the time of day the first one names. Sale has "By the brightness of the morning", Pickthall "By the morning hours" and Itani "By the morning light", where Palmer has "By the forenoon" and Rodwell "BY the noon-day BRIGHTNESS". The second oath is by the night, and what is said of the night also differs: "when it groweth dark" in Sale, "when it darkeneth" in Rodwell and "when it darkens" in Palmer, against "when it is stillest" in Pickthall and "as it settles" in Itani - darkness in three, quiet in two.
At 93:3 what is denied is put first: "hath not forsaken thee" in Sale and Pickthall both. Sale and Pickthall both have "hath not forsaken thee", and then the second half parts: "neither doth He hate thee" in Sale, "nor doth He hate thee" in Pickthall and "nor hated thee" in Palmer, where Rodwell has "neither hath he been displeased" and Itani "did not abandon you" followed by "nor did He forget" Hatred, displeasure and forgetting are three different things, and this study does not choose between them.
At 93:4 what is better is named differently: "the life to come" in Sale, "the Future" in Rodwell, "the hereafter" in Palmer, "the latter portion" in Pickthall and "The Hereafter" in Itani - and what it is better than is "this present life" in Sale, "the Past" in Rodwell, "the former" in Palmer and "the First" in Itani. At 93:5 what is promised is "a reward wherewith thou shalt be well pleased" in Sale, while Rodwell has "shall thy Lord be bounteous to thee", Palmer "thy Lord will give thee", Pickthall "so that thou wilt be content" and Itani "you will be satisfied" - three of the five name no gift at all, only the giving and the contentment.
93:6-8 are three questions about what was found and what followed. At 93:6 the person is found an orphan - "find thee an orphan" in Sale - and what was then done is "gave thee a home" in Rodwell, "give the shelter" in Palmer, "protect (thee)" in Pickthall, where the brackets are his own, and "find you orphaned" in Itani. At 93:7 the finding is "wandering in error" in Sale, "found thee erring" in Rodwell, "find thee erring" in Palmer, "find thee wandering" in Pickthall and "found you wandering" in Itani, and the response is "guided thee into the truth" in Sale against "direct (thee)" in Pickthall. At 93:8 the person is "find thee needy" in Sale, "found thee needy" in Rodwell, "find thee destitute" in Pickthall and "found you in need" in Itani, where Palmer alone has "poor with a family"; what follows is "nourish thee" in Palmer and "enrich (thee)" in Pickthall.
The surah closes with instructions. At 93:9 the orphan: "oppress not the orphan" in Sale, "wrong him not" in Rodwell, "oppress him not" in Palmer, "the orphan oppress not" in Pickthall and "do not mistreat the orphan" in Itani. At 93:10 the one who asks: "repulse the beggar" in Sale, "him that asketh of thee" in Rodwell, "drive him not away" in Palmer, "the beggar drive not away" in Pickthall and "rebuff the seeker" in Itani. At 93:11 what is to be done with what was given: "declare the goodness of thy Lord" in Sale, "tell them abroad" in Rodwell, "discourse thereof" in Palmer, "be thy discourse" in Pickthall and "proclaim the blessings of your Lord" in Itani.
The verses do not say who is addressed, or on what occasion. The study What does the Qur'an say about caring for the poor and the orphan? carries 93:9 and the study What does the Qur'an say about self-reliance over begging? carries 93:10, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say who the surah addresses, or on what occasion it was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 93:1, widening across 11 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 11 passages, each with every cleared translation
11 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. 93:11 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 93:1-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eleven verses of Surah ad-Duha, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
