It is for the poor; those who are restrained in the way of God, and unable to travel in the land. The unaware would think them rich, due to their dignity. You will recognize them by their features. They do not ask from people insistently. Whatever charity you give, God is aware of it.
What does the Qur'an say about self-reliance over begging?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:273 Alms are for the poor who are straitened for the cause of God, who cannot travel in the land for trade. THE UNTHINKING MAN ACCOUNTETH THEM WEALTHY BECAUSE OF THEIR MODESTY. Thou shalt know them by their mark: THEY DO NOT BEG OF MEN WITH IMPORTUNITY. In because it is the central verse: it describes people in real need who do not ask, and makes their not-asking the mark by which they are to be found.
- 02 93:10 THEREFOR THE BEGGAR DRIVE NOT AWAY. In because it is the duty on the other side, stated in four words, and because it sits in the same surah as the instruction about the orphan.
- 03 70:24–25 And in whose wealth there is A RIGHT ACKNOWLEDGED for the beggar and the destitute. In as ONE PASSAGE because the beggar is named as holding a RIGHT rather than receiving a favour. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the poor's right in your wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 04 11:29 And O my people, I ASK OF YOU NO WEALTH THEREFOR. My reward is the concern only of God. In because prophets in this text repeatedly refuse payment, which is the strongest form of the self-reliance the question asks about.
- 05 4:32 And covet not the thing in which God hath made some of you excel others... AND ASK GOD OF HIS BOUNTY. In because it redirects asking from people to God, which is the text's own resolution. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about envy?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse carries this, and it is one of the most humane in the Qur'an.
2:273 is describing who the alms are for, and instead of a category it gives a portrait. People straitened in God's cause who CANNOT TRAVEL IN THE LAND for trade. And then: THE UNTHINKING MAN SUPPOSES THEM WEALTHY BECAUSE OF THEIR RESTRAINT. You shall know them by their mark - THEY DO NOT BEG OF MEN WITH IMPORTUNITY.
Three things follow from that. The people most in need may be invisible, because they do not ask. Their not-asking is presented as a dignity, not a fault. And the burden is placed on the giver to recognise them - the verse says the careless observer will get it wrong.
93:10 states the other duty in four words: THE BEGGAR DRIVE NOT AWAY. The text does not disparage the person who does ask.
70:24-25 removes the transaction from charity altogether: in the wealth of these people there is A RIGHT ACKNOWLEDGED for the beggar and the destitute. If it is a right, asking for it is not begging.
11:29 shows the strongest form of self-reliance in the text, and it is the prophets who practise it: I ASK OF YOU NO WEALTH FOR THIS. The refusal of payment recurs across several surahs.
4:32 supplies the redirection: do not covet what others were given - ASK GOD OF HIS BOUNTY.
The very extensive material on the dignity of the upper hand and the disgrace of asking is NOT in the Qur'an, and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:273, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

(Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it
unto the poor who are straitened in God's way, and cannot knock about in the earth. The ignorant think them to be rich because of their modesty; you will know them by their mark, they do not beg from men importunately; but what ye spend of good God knows
There are among you the poor, who being shut up to fighting for the cause of God, have it not in their power to strike out into the earth for riches. Those who know them not, think them rich because of their modesty. By this their token thou shalt know them - they ask not of men with importunity: and of whatever good thing ye shall give them in alms, of a truth God will take knowledge
unto the poor who are wholly employed in fighting for the religion of God, and cannot go to and fro in the earth; whom the ignorant man thinketh rich, because of their modesty: Thou shalt know them by this mark, they ask not men with importunity; and what good ye shall give in alms, verily God knoweth it

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Those who swallow usury will not rise, except as someone driven mad by Satan's touch. That is because they say, "Commerce is like usury." But God has permitted commerce, and has forbidden usury. Whoever, on receiving advice from his Lord, refrains, may keep his past earnings, and his case rests with God. But whoever resumes-these are the dwellers of the Fire, wherein they will abide forever.
Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury) - Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein
Those who devour usury shall not rise again, save as he riseth whom Satan hath paralysed with a touch; and that is because they say 'selling is only like usury,' but God has made selling lawful and usury unlawful; and he to whom the admonition from his Lord has come, if he desists, what has gone before is his: his matter is in God's hands. But whosoever returns (to usury) these are the fellows of the Fire, and they shall dwell therein for aye
They who swallow down usury, shall arise in the resurrection only as he ariseth whom Satan hath infected by his touch. This, for that they say, "Selling is only the like of usury:" and yet God hath allowed selling, and forbidden usury. He then who when this warning shall come to him from his Lord, abstaineth, shall have pardon for the past, and his lot shall be with God. But they who return to usury, shall be given over to the fire; therein shall they abide for ever
They who devour usury shall not arise from the dead, but as he ariseth whom Satan hath infected by a touch: This shall happen to them because they say. Truly selling is but as usury: And yet God hath permitted selling and forbidden usury. He therefore who when there cometh unto him an admonition from his Lord, abstaineth from usury for the future, shall have what is past forgiven him, and his affair belongeth unto God. But whoever returneth to usury, they shall be the companions of hell fire, they shall continue therein for ever

I say not unto you: "I have the treasures of Allah" nor "I have knowledge of the Unseen," nor say I: "Lo! I am an angel!" Nor say I unto those whom your eyes scorn that Allah will not give them good - Allah knoweth best what is in their hearts - Lo! then indeed I should be of the wrong-doers

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as God has given some of them an advantage over others, and because they spend out of their wealth. The good women are obedient, guarding what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, and abandon them in their beds, then strike them. But if they obey you, seek no way against them. God is Sublime, Great.
Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great
Men stand superior to women in that God hath preferred some of them over others, and in that they expend of their wealth: and the virtuous women, devoted, careful (in their husbands') absence, as God has cared for them. But those whose perverseness ye fear, admonish them and remove them into bed-chambers and beat them; but if they submit to you, then do not seek a way against them; verily, God is high and great
Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with which God hath gifted the one above the other, and on account of the outlay they make from their substance for them. Virtuous women are obedient, careful, during the husband's absence, because God hath of them been careful. But chide those for whose refractoriness ye have cause to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourage them: but if they are obedient to you, then seek not occasion against them: verily, God is High, Great
Men shall have the pre-eminence above women, because of those advantages wherein God hath caused the one of them to excel the other, and for that which they expend of their substance in maintaining their wives. The honest women are obedient, careful in the absence of their husbands, for that God preserveth them, by committing them to the care and protection of the men. But those, whose perverseness ye shall be apprehensive of, rebuke; and remove them into separate apartments, and chastise them. But if they shall be obedient unto you, seek not an occasion of quarrel against them; for God is high and great
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:273, 93:10, 70:24-25, 11:29, 4:32, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - beg + not + importunately; importune + not; unlearned + deemeth + them + rich; ask + not + of + men; repulse + not + the + beggar. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 9 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:189 - matched on 'ask'; a question put to the Prophet; 2:217 - the same; 4:176 - the same; 7:187 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the signs of the Last Hour?; 16:43 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about seeking knowledge?; 21:7 - the same; 31:15 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about obeying those in authority?; 33:63 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the signs of the Last Hour?; 60:10 - a procedural rule.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
