I swear by this land.
What does Surah al-Balad say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 90:1 Nay, I swear by this city. This is here because the renderings do not agree on whether this is an oath or a refusal to swear one: "I swear by this territory" in Sale and "I swear by this land" in Itani, against "I need not swear by the Lord of this land" in Palmer and "I NEED not to swear by this SOIL" in Rodwell, with "Nay, I swear by this city" in Pickthall.
- 02 90:2 And thou art an indweller of this city. This is here because Sale alone names who lives in that place: "and thou, O prophet, residest in this territory" in Sale, against "This soil on which thou dost dwell" in Rodwell, "and though a dweller in this land" in Palmer and "And thou art an indweller of this city" in Pickthall.
- 03 90:3 And the begetter and that which he begat. This is here because it is the second thing sworn by, and it is named without being identified: "and by the begetter, and that which He hath begotten" in Sale, "Or by sire and offspring" in Rodwell, "Nor by the begetter and what he begets" in Palmer and "And the begetter and that which he begat" in Pickthall.
- 04 90:4 We verily have created man in an atmosphere. This is here because it is what the oath is sworn about, and Pickthall reads the condition differently from the rest: "verily We have created man in misery" in Sale, "Surely in trouble have we created man" in Rodwell and "We created man in distress" in Itani, against "We verily have created man in an atmosphere" in Pickthall.
- 05 90:5 Thinketh he that none hath power over him. This is here because it is the first of the two questions put to that man: "Doth he think that none shall prevail over him" in Sale, "thinketh he that no one hath power over him" in Rodwell and "Does he think that none can do aught against him" in Palmer.
- 06 90:6 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth. This is here because it is the man's own words, and what he claims to have done with the wealth differs: "He saith, I have wasted plenty of riches" in Sale and "He says, I have wasted wealth in plenty" in Palmer, against "And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth" in Pickthall.
- 07 90:7 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him. This is here because it is the second question, and it turns on being seen rather than being overpowered: "Doth he think that none seeth him" in Sale, "thinketh he that no one regardeth him" in Rodwell and "does he think that no one sees him" in Palmer.
- 08 90:8 Did We not assign unto him two eyes. This is here because it begins the answer by listing what the man was given, and Rodwell alone does not count them: "Have we not made him two eyes" in Sale and "Have we not made for him two eyes" in Palmer, against "have we not made him eyes" in Rodwell.
- 09 90:9 And a tongue and two lips. This is here because it continues that list: "and a tongue, and two lips" in Sale and Palmer, "And tongue, and lips" in Rodwell and "And a tongue and two lips" in Pickthall.
- 10 90:10 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways. This is here because Sale alone says where the two roads lead, and Pickthall alone reads them as terrain: "and shewn him the two highways of good and evil" in Sale, against "And guided him to the two highways" in Rodwell and "and guided him in the two highways" in Palmer, and against "And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways" in Pickthall.
- 11 90:11 But he hath not attempted the Ascent. This is here because it names what the man did not do, and the renderings differ over what that is: "Yet he attempteth not the cliff" in Sale, "Yet he attempted not the steep" in Rodwell, "But he hath not attempted the Ascent" in Pickthall and "But he did not brave the ascent" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with different reasons there.
- 12 90:12 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is. This is here because the surah stops to ask what that hard road is before saying: "What shall make thee to understand what the cliff is" in Sale, "And who shall teach thee what the steep is" in Rodwell and "Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with different reasons there.
- 13 90:13 (It is) to free a slave. This is here because it is the first thing the hard road is said to be, and the renderings name the person freed differently: "It is to free the captive" in Sale, "It is to ransom the captive" in Rodwell and "It is freeing captives" in Palmer, against "(It is) to free a slave" in Pickthall, with his own brackets, and "The freeing of a slave" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with different reasons there.
- 14 90:14 And to feed in the day of hunger. This is here because it is the second thing, and it is fixed to a hard day: "or to feed, in the day of famine" in Sale, "Or to feed in the day of famine" in Rodwell, "or feeding on the day of famine" in Palmer and "And to feed in the day of hunger" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with different reasons there.
- 15 90:15 An orphan near of kin. This is here because it names the first person to be fed, and all four public-domain renderings make the tie a family one: "the orphan who is of kin" in Sale, "The orphan who is near of kin" in Rodwell, "an orphan who is akin" in Palmer and "An orphan near of kin" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with different reasons there.
- 16 90:16 Or some poor wretch in misery. This is here because it names the second person to be fed, with no tie of kin at all: "or the poor man who lieth on the ground" in Sale, "or the poor that lieth in the dust" in Rodwell, "or a poor man who lies in the dust" in Palmer, "Or some poor wretch in misery" in Pickthall and "Or a destitute in the dust" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with different reasons there.
- 17 90:17 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. This is here because it adds belief and mutual urging to the deeds just listed: "Whoso doth this, and is one of those who believe, and recommend perseverance unto each other, and recommend mercy unto each other" in Sale, "Beside this, to be of those who believe, and enjoin stedfastness on each other, and enjoin compassion on each other" in Rodwell and "And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage?, with a different reason there.
- 18 90:18 Their place will be on the right hand. This is here because it names where those people stand, and Itani names a state where the others name a hand: "these shall be the companions of the right-hand" in Sale, "These shall be the people of the right hand" in Rodwell, "these are the fellows of the right" in Palmer and "Their place will be on the right hand" in Pickthall, against "These are the people of happiness" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage?, with a different reason there.
- 19 90:19 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. This is here because it names the other side and says what puts them there: "But they who shall disbelieve our signs, shall be the companions of the left-hand" in Sale, "But those who disbelieve in our signs, they are the fellows of the left" in Palmer and "But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand" in Pickthall.
- 20 90:20 Fire will be an awning over them. This is here because it closes the surah, and each rendering puts the fire somewhere different: "Above them shall be arched fire" in Sale, "Around them the fire shall close" in Rodwell, "for them is fire that closes in" in Palmer, "Fire will be an awning over them" in Pickthall and "Upon them is a padlocked Fire" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Balad is twenty verses long. It opens with an oath sworn - or refused - by a place, says what man was made in, puts two questions to him about what he thinks no one can see, lists what he was given, names a hard road he did not take, and says what that road actually is.
The renderings do not agree on whether 90:1 is an oath at all. Sale has "I swear by this territory" and Itani "I swear by this land", against "I need not swear by the Lord of this land" in Palmer and "I NEED not to swear by this SOIL" in Rodwell - a refusal where the others have a vow. Pickthall has a third shape in "Nay, I swear by this city". At 90:2 Sale alone names who lives there: "and thou, O prophet, residest in this territory", where Palmer has only "and though a dweller in this land". A second oath follows at 90:3, "and by the begetter, and that which He hath begotten" in Sale and "Or by sire and offspring" in Rodwell.
What the oath is sworn about is stated at 90:4, and Pickthall stands apart: "verily We have created man in misery" in Sale, "Surely in trouble have we created man" in Rodwell and "We created man in distress" in Itani, against "We verily have created man in an atmosphere" in Pickthall.
90:5-7 put two questions, the first about power and the second about being seen: "Doth he think that none shall prevail over him" in Sale, then his own boast at 90:6 - "He saith, I have wasted plenty of riches" in Sale and "And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth" in Pickthall - and then "Doth he think that none seeth him". 90:8-10 answer by listing what he was given. The eyes, tongue and lips are read the same way across the renderings, but the last item is not: Sale alone says where the two roads lead, in "and shewn him the two highways of good and evil", where Rodwell has "And guided him to the two highways" and Pickthall reads them as terrain in "And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways".
90:11-12 name what he did not do, and the renderings differ over what it is: "Yet he attempteth not the cliff" in Sale against "Yet he attempted not the steep" in Rodwell, "But he hath not attempted the Ascent" in Pickthall and "But he did not brave the ascent" in Itani. The surah then asks what it is - "What shall make thee to understand what the cliff is" in Sale - before answering.
The answer runs at 90:13-17 as a list of things done for other people. The first is "It is to free the captive" in Sale and "It is to ransom the captive" in Rodwell, where Pickthall has "(It is) to free a slave" in his own brackets and Itani "The freeing of a slave". The second is feeding on a hard day - "or to feed, in the day of famine" in Sale and "And to feed in the day of hunger" in Pickthall - and those fed are "the orphan who is of kin" and "or the poor man who lieth on the ground" in Sale, "Or some poor wretch in misery" in Pickthall. 90:17 adds belief and mutual urging: "Beside this, to be of those who believe, and enjoin stedfastness on each other, and enjoin compassion on each other" in Rodwell.
90:18-20 divide the outcome. All four public-domain renderings use a hand - "these shall be the companions of the right-hand" in Sale, "these are the fellows of the right" in Palmer - where Itani names a state instead, in "These are the people of happiness". The other side is "But they who shall disbelieve our signs, shall be the companions of the left-hand" in Sale, and the surah closes on fire placed differently by each: "Above them shall be arched fire" in Sale, "Around them the fire shall close" in Rodwell, "Fire will be an awning over them" in Pickthall and "Upon them is a padlocked Fire" in Itani. The studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open? carry parts of this closing stretch, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not name the place sworn by, and it does not settle whether the opening is an oath or a refusal to swear - the renderings themselves divide on that. It does not say who the man who boasts of spending was, or when: filling that in needs an occasion of revelation or a biography, and this study holds neither in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 90:1, widening across 20 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 20 passages, each with every cleared translation
20 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand
But those who disbelieve in our signs, they are the fellows of the left

90:20 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 90:1-20, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all twenty verses of Surah al-Balad, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
