But he did not brave the ascent.
What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 90:11–18 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - and what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is? IT IS TO FREE A SLAVE, AND TO FEED IN THE DAY OF HUNGER AN ORPHAN NEAR OF KIN, OR SOME POOR WRETCH IN MISERY, and to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. Their place will be on the right hand. In as ONE PASSAGE because the question, the answer and the company it keeps are one movement - and because the text asks its own reader what the steep path is before naming it.
- 02 76:8–12 And they feed with food THE NEEDY WRETCH, THE ORPHAN AND THE PRISONER, for love of Him, saying: we feed you for the sake of God only. WE WISH FOR NO REWARD NOR THANKS FROM YOU. Lo, we fear from our Lord a day of frowning and of fate. Therefor God hath warded off from them the evil of that day... and hath awarded them for all that they endured, A GARDEN AND SILK ATTIRE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the disclaimer of reward is stated by the givers and the reward is given anyway.
- 03 2:177 Righteous is he who giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, AND TO SET SLAVES FREE. In because both acts appear inside the text's own definition of righteousness. ALSO CARRIED by several studies, with different reasons there.
- 04 9:60 The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, AND TO FREE THE CAPTIVES, and the debtors, and for the cause of God, and the wayfarer. In because it makes manumission a standing charge on community funds rather than an individual merit. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open? and What does the Qur'an say about debt and giving time to repay?, with different reasons there.
- 05 107:1–3 Hast thou observed him who belieth religion? That is he who repelleth the orphan, AND URGETH NOT THE FEEDING OF THE NEEDY. In as ONE PASSAGE because it states the converse - failing to urge the feeding is given as the mark of denying religion itself.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
90:11-18 is the passage this question is really about, and its structure is unusual: the Qur'an asks its own reader a question and then answers it.
BUT HE HATH NOT ATTEMPTED THE ASCENT - the steep path, the uphill road. AND WHAT WILL CONVEY UNTO THEE WHAT THE ASCENT IS?
And the answer, in order: IT IS TO FREE A SLAVE. AND TO FEED IN THE DAY OF HUNGER AN ORPHAN NEAR OF KIN, OR SOME POOR WRETCH IN MISERY.
Freeing a person comes first, before feeding. And then the passage adds the company these acts must keep - being of those who believe and who EXHORT ONE ANOTHER TO PERSEVERANCE AND TO PITY.
76:8-12 gives the same two acts with a motive attached, and the motive is stated by the givers themselves: WE FEED YOU FOR THE SAKE OF GOD ONLY - WE WISH FOR NO REWARD NOR THANKS FROM YOU. They disclaim any return, and the passage then describes what they receive: protection from that day, brightness, gladness, a garden and silk.
The prisoner is in that list alongside the orphan and the destitute.
9:60 removes manumission from the realm of private virtue by writing it into the eight categories of zakat expenditure.
And 107:1-3 states the converse in the sharpest terms the Qur'an uses: the man who BELIES RELIGION is the one who repels the orphan and does not urge the feeding of the needy. Not failing to feed - failing to URGE it. Denying religion is defined by that failure.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 90:11–18, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the Allah-fearing
Righteousness is not that ye turn your faces towards the east or the west, but righteousness is, one who believes in God, and the last day, and the angels, and the Book, and the prophets, and who gives wealth for His love to kindred, and orphans, and the poor, and the son of the road, beggars, and those in captivity; and who is steadfast in prayer, and gives alms; and those who are sure of their covenant when they make a covenant; and the patient in poverty, and distress, and in time of violence; these are they who are true, and these are those who fear
There is no piety in turning your faces toward the east or the west, but he is pious who believeth in God, and the last day, and the angels, and the Scriptures, and the prophets; who for the love of God disburseth his wealth to his kindred, and to the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and those who ask, and for ransoming; who observeth prayer, and payeth the legal alms, and who is of those who are faithful to their engagements when they have engaged in them, and patient under ills and hardships, and in time of trouble: these are they who are just, and these are they who fear the Lord
It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces in prayer towards the east and the west, but righteousness is of him who believeth in God and the last day, and the angels, and the scriptures, and the prophets; who giveth money for God's sake unto his kindred, and unto orphans, and the needy, and the stranger, and those who ask, and for redemption of captives; who is constant at prayer, and giveth alms; and of those who perform their covenant, when they have covenanted, and who behave themselves patiently in adversity, and hardships, and in time of violence: These are they who are true, and these are they who fear God

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Fakat iyilik Allah’a, ahiret gününe, meleklere, kitaba ve peygamberlere iman eden, malına olan sevgisine rağmen; akrabaya, yetimlere, yoksullara, yolda kalmışlara, isteyenlere, kölelere ve esirlere veren, namazı dosdoğru kılan, zekâtı veren, sözleştikleri zaman sözlerini yerine getiren, sıkıntıda, hastalıkta ve savaşta sabredenlerin yaptıklarıdır. İşte doğru ve takvalı olanlar onlardır.

It is they who exchange guidance for error, and forgiveness for punishment. But why do they insist on the Fire?
Those are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, and torment at the price of pardon. How constant are they in their strife to reach the Fire
They who sell guidance for error, and pardon for torment, how patient must they be of fire
These are they who have bartered guidance for error, and pardon for torment; But how great their endurance in fire
These are they who have sold direction for error, and pardon for punishment: But how great will their suffering be in the fire

O you who believe! Retaliation for the murdered is ordained upon you: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if he is forgiven by his kin, then grant any reasonable demand, and pay with good will. This is a concession from your Lord, and a mercy. But whoever commits aggression after that, a painful torment awaits him.
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (injured) brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. He who transgresseth after this will have a painful doom
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you for the slain: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female; yet he who is pardoned at all by his brother, must be prosecuted in reason, and made to pay with kindness. That is an alleviation from your Lord, and a mercy; and he who transgresses after that for him is grievous woe
O believers! retaliation for bloodshedding is prescribed to you: the free man for the free, and the slave for the slave, and the woman for the woman: but he to whom his brother shall make any remission, is to be dealt with equitably; and to him should he pay a fine with liberality. This is a relaxation from your Lord and a mercy. For him who after his shall transgress, a sore punishment
O true believers, the law of retaliation is ordained you for the slain: The free shall die for the free, and the servant for the servant, and a woman for a woman: But he whom his brother shall forgive, may be prosecuted, and obliged to make satisfaction according to what is just, and a fine shall be set on him with humanity. This is indulgence from your Lord, and mercy. And he who shall transgress after this, by killing the murderer, shall suffer a grievous punishment

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 90:11-18, 76:8-12, 2:177, 9:60, 107:1-3, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - what + will + convey + unto + thee + what + the + ascent + is; it + is + to + free + a + slave; feed + in + the + day + of + hunger; orphan + near + of + kin. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:92 - carried by the study What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?; 6:152 - carried by several studies; 59:7 - the distribution of spoils.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
