Condemned are the hands of Abee Lahab, and he is condemned.
What does Surah al-Masad say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 111:1 The power of Abu Lahab will perish, and he will perish. This is here because it opens the surah and names the one it opens on, "Abu Laheb" in Sale, "ABU LAHAB" in Rodwell, "Abu Lahab" in Pickthall and "Abee Lahab" in Itani, and because Pickthall's "The power of" stands where Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani have "hands". ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 02 111:2 His wealth and gains will not exempt him. This is here because it holds what does not help him, "His riches" in Sale and "His wealth" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, and Itani words it in the past, "did not avail him". ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 03 111:3 He will be plunged in flaming Fire. This is here because it holds what is to come to him, in words the renderings do not all share: "go down to be burned" in Sale, "Burned shall he be" in Rodwell, "broil" in Palmer, "be plunged" in Pickthall and "burn" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 04 111:4 And his wife, the wood-carrier. This is here because it turns to his wife, who is not named, in words the renderings do not all share: "bearing wood" in Sale, "laden with fire wood" in Rodwell, "carrying faggots" in Palmer, "the wood-carrier" in Pickthall and "the firewood carrier" in Itani.
- 05 111:5 Will have upon her neck a halter of palm-fibre. This is here because it closes the surah with what is on her neck: "a cord of twisted fibres of a palm-tree" in Sale, "a rope of palm fibre" in Rodwell, "a cord of palm fibres" in Palmer, "a halter of palm-fibre" in Pickthall and "a rope of thorns" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Masad is five verses long. It names one person, "Abu Laheb" in Sale, "ABU LAHAB" in Rodwell, "Abu Lahab" in Pickthall and "Abee Lahab" in Itani, and it turns at the end to his wife, who is not named.
At 111:1 Sale has "The hands of Abu Laheb", Rodwell "the hands of ABU LAHAB", Palmer "two hands" and Itani "the hands of Abee Lahab", where Pickthall has "The power of Abu Lahab". The renderings also word what befalls the hands differently: "shall perish" in Sale and Palmer, "will perish" in Pickthall, "LET the hands of ABU LAHAB perish" in Rodwell, and "Condemned are the hands" in Itani, who has "he is condemned" for the man himself. The verse does not say who he was, and this study does not say either.
At 111:2 what does not help him is "His riches" in Sale and "His wealth" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, with "that which he hath gained" in Sale, "his gains" in Rodwell, "what he has earned" in Palmer, "gains" in Pickthall and "what he acquired" in Itani. Itani puts it in the past, "did not avail him", where Sale has "shall not profit him", Palmer "shall not avail him", Rodwell "shall avail him not" and Pickthall "will not exempt him".
At 111:3 the renderings have "go down to be burned into flaming fire" in Sale, "Burned shall he be at the fiery flame" in Rodwell, "broil in a fire that flames" in Palmer, "be plunged in flaming Fire" in Pickthall and "burn in a Flaming Fire" in Itani.
At 111:4 his wife is "bearing wood" in Sale, "laden with fire wood" in Rodwell, "carrying faggots" in Palmer, "the wood-carrier" in Pickthall and "the firewood carrier" in Itani. At 111:5 what is on her neck is "a cord of twisted fibres of a palm-tree" in Sale, "a rope of palm fibre" in Rodwell, "a cord of palm fibres" in Palmer, "a halter of palm-fibre" in Pickthall and "a rope of thorns" in Itani. The verses do not name her, and do not say what the wood or the cord is for. The study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day? carries 111:1-3, with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say who the person the surah names was, or who his wife was, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 111:1, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 111:1-5, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all five verses of Surah al-Masad, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
