By the sun and its radiance.
What does Surah ash-Shams say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 91:1 By the sun and his brightness. This is here because it opens the run of oaths, and the renderings do not place the sun at the same hour: "By the sun, and its rising brightness" in Sale against "BY the SUN and his noonday brightness" in Rodwell and "By the sun and its noonday brightness" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 02 91:2 And the moon when she followeth him. This is here because it is the second oath and the renderings divide over whether the moon is she or it: "when she followeth him" in Sale and Pickthall, "when it follows him" in Palmer and "as it follows it" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 03 91:3 And the day when it revealeth him. This is here because it continues the pairing of day with sun: "when it sheweth his splendor" in Sale, "when it revealeth his glory" in Rodwell, "when it displays him" in Palmer and "as it reveals it" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 04 91:4 And the night when it enshroudeth him. This is here because it completes the pairing with the night, and what the night does differs: "when it covereth him with darkness" in Sale, "when it enshroudeth him" in Rodwell, "when it covers him" in Palmer and "as it conceals it" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 05 91:5 And the heaven and Him Who built it. This is here because the oath turns from things to their maker, and Palmer alone reads that maker as a what: "and Him who built it" in Sale, "and Him Who built it" in Pickthall and "and He who built it" in Itani, against "and what built it" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 06 91:6 And the earth and Him Who spread it. This is here because it repeats that shape for the earth: "and Him who spread it forth" in Sale, "and Him Who spread it" in Pickthall and "and He who spread it" in Itani, against "and what spread it" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 07 91:7 And a soul and Him Who perfected it. This is here because it is the last oath and the one about the soul, and what was done to it differs: "Him who completely formed it" in Sale, "Him who balanced it" in Rodwell, "Him Who perfected it" in Pickthall and "He who proportioned it" in Itani, where Palmer has "what fashioned it, and taught it". ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 08 91:8 And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it. This is here because the renderings spread furthest here: "its faculty of distinguishing, and power of choosing, wickedness and piety" in Sale, "breathed into it its wickedness and its piety" in Rodwell, "inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it" in Pickthall with his own brackets, and "its sin and its piety" in Palmer, which is the whole of it.
- 09 91:9 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow. This is here because it is the first of the two outcomes, and Pickthall alone reads it as growth: "he who hath purified the same, happy" in Sale, "Blessed now is he who hath kept it pure" in Rodwell, "Prosperous is he who purifies it" in Palmer and "Successful is he who purifies it" in Itani, against "He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow" in Pickthall.
- 10 91:10 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. This is here because it is the second outcome and Pickthall keeps the same image: "he who hath corrupted the same, is miserable" in Sale, "undone is he who hath corrupted it" in Rodwell and "disappointed is he who corrupts it" in Palmer, against "a failure who stunteth it" in Pickthall.
- 11 91:11 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride. This is here because the surah turns here to Thamud, and Sale alone supplies a name for the one they rejected: "Thamud accused their prophet Saleh of imposture" in Sale, against "Themoud in his impiety rejected the message of the Lord" in Rodwell, "Thamud called the apostle a liar in their outrage" in Palmer and "Thamood denied in its pride" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel?, with a different reason there.
- 12 91:12 When the basest of them broke forth. This is here because Sale alone supplies the errand as well as the man: "When the wretch among them was sent to slay the camel" in Sale, against "When the greatest wretch among them rushed up" in Rodwell, "when their wretch rose up" in Palmer and "When the basest of them broke forth" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel?, with a different reason there.
- 13 91:13 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink. This is here because it is the instruction that was given about the she-camel: "let alone the camel of God; and hinder not her drinking" in Sale, "God's she-camel! so give her to drink" in Palmer and "It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel?, with a different reason there.
- 14 91:14 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). This is here because it is what was done and what followed: "they slew her" in Sale, "hamstrung her" in Rodwell and Itani, "they ham-strung her" in Palmer and "they hamstrung her" in Pickthall; then "rased (their dwellings)" in Pickthall and "leveled it" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel?, with a different reason there.
- 15 91:15 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). This is here because it closes the surah on one who does not fear the outcome: "he feareth not the issue thereof" in Sale, "He dreadeth not the sequel (of events)" in Pickthall and "He does not fear its sequel" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah ash-Shams is fifteen verses long. It opens with a run of oaths by things in the sky and on the earth, states a pair of outcomes for the soul, and then tells what happened to a people who refused what they were told.
The oaths run from 91:1 to 91:7. At 91:1 the renderings differ on the hour: Sale has "By the sun, and its rising brightness" where Rodwell has "BY the SUN and his noonday brightness" and Palmer "By the sun and its noonday brightness", against "By the sun and his brightness" in Pickthall and "By the sun and its radiance" in Itani. Through 91:2-4 the sun is followed, revealed and covered, and the renderings divide over whether the moon and the day are he or it: "when she followeth him" in Sale and Pickthall against "when it follows him" in Palmer and "as it follows it" in Itani.
At 91:5-7 the oaths turn to the heaven, the earth and the soul, and Palmer alone reads the second half of each as a what rather than a who: "and Him who built it" in Sale and "and Him Who built it" in Pickthall against "and what built it" in Palmer, then "and Him who spread it forth" in Sale against "and what spread it" in Palmer. At 91:7 what was done to the soul is "Him who completely formed it" in Sale, "Him who balanced it" in Rodwell, "Him Who perfected it" in Pickthall and "He who proportioned it" in Itani, where Palmer has "what fashioned it, and taught it".
91:8 is the longest spread in the surah. Sale expands it to "its faculty of distinguishing, and power of choosing, wickedness and piety", Rodwell has "breathed into it its wickedness and its piety", Pickthall "inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it" with his own brackets, and Itani "inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness" - where Palmer gives only "its sin and its piety".
91:9-10 set two outcomes against each other. What is done well is "he who hath purified the same, happy" in Sale, "Blessed now is he who hath kept it pure" in Rodwell, "Prosperous is he who purifies it" in Palmer and "Successful is he who purifies it" in Itani, where Pickthall has "He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow". What is done badly is "he who hath corrupted the same, is miserable" in Sale, "undone is he who hath corrupted it" in Rodwell and "disappointed is he who corrupts it" in Palmer, against "a failure who stunteth it" in Pickthall - growth and stunting in Pickthall where the others have purity and corruption.
From 91:11 the surah turns to Thamud. Sale alone supplies a name for the one they rejected - "Thamud accused their prophet Saleh of imposture" - where Rodwell has "Themoud in his impiety rejected the message of the Lord", Palmer "Thamud called the apostle a liar in their outrage", Pickthall "(The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride" with his own brackets, and Itani "Thamood denied in its pride". At 91:12 Sale alone also supplies the errand: "When the wretch among them was sent to slay the camel", against "When the greatest wretch among them rushed up" in Rodwell, "when their wretch rose up" in Palmer and "When the basest of them broke forth" in Pickthall.
At 91:13 the she-camel is named and left to drink, and at 91:14 she is killed: "they slew her" in Sale, "hamstrung her" in Rodwell and Itani, "they ham-strung her" in Palmer and "they hamstrung her" in Pickthall. What followed is "rased (their dwellings)" in Pickthall and "leveled it" in Itani. The surah closes at 91:15 on the one who does not fear the outcome. The study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen? carries 91:1-7 and the study What does the Qur'an say about Salih and the she-camel? carries 91:11-15, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the prophet whom Sale alone names, or tell the story of Thamud beyond what these verses say: filling either in needs a biography or an occasion of revelation, and this study holds neither in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 91:1, widening across 15 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 15 passages, each with every cleared translation
15 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Isa kijibsiisanii, ishee waraanan, Rabbiin isaanii Sababa badii isaanii isaan balleessee, ishee wal qixxeesse.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 91:1-15, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all fifteen verses of Surah ash-Shams, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
