By the fig and the olive.
What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 95:1–3 BY THE FIG AND THE OLIVE, and Mount Sinai, and this land made safe. In as ONE PASSAGE because the four objects sworn by are one sequence - two fruits, a mountain and a city - and no single one of them shows what the series is doing.
- 02 91:1–7 BY THE SUN and his brightness, and the moon when she followeth him, and the day when it revealeth him, and the night when it enshroudeth him, and the heaven and Him Who built it, and the earth and Him Who spread it, and a soul and Him Who perfected it. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the longest run of oaths in the book and it climbs deliberately from the sun to the human soul.
- 03 68:1 NUN. BY THE PEN and that which they write (therewith). In because it swears by an instrument and by an activity, which is unlike the rest of the set, and because it opens a surah with a disconnected letter attached.
- 04 53:1–2 BY THE STAR WHEN IT SETTETH, your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived. In as ONE PASSAGE because the oath and what it certifies are one sentence, which shows what these oaths are FOR.
- 05 75:1–2 Nay, I SWEAR BY the Day of Resurrection; nay, I swear by THE ACCUSING SOUL. In as ONE PASSAGE because the pairing of a future day with the self-reproaching conscience is the strangest juxtaposition in the set.
- 06 56:75–76 Nay, I swear by THE PLACES OF THE STARS - and lo, that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew. In as ONE PASSAGE because 56:76 is the text commenting on its own oath, which happens nowhere else.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an swears by things constantly, and the range is startling once it is laid out: the fig, the olive, a mountain, a city, the sun, the moon, day, night, sky, earth, a human soul, the pen, a setting star, the Day of Resurrection, the accusing conscience, and the positions of the stars.
Two features are worth a reader's attention.
First, the sequences CLIMB. 91:1-7 begins with the sun and its brightness and ends with A SOUL AND HIM WHO PERFECTED IT - moving from the largest visible object to the inside of a person. 95:1-3 goes from two ordinary fruits to Sinai to a safe city. These are not lists; they are ascents.
Second, the text once comments on its own practice. 56:76: AND LO, THAT VERILY IS A TREMENDOUS OATH, IF YE BUT KNEW. Having sworn by the places of the stars, it stops to say that the oath is greater than it looks. Nothing else in the set does that.
53:1-2 shows what the oaths are for. By the star when it sets - and then the thing being certified: your comrade errs not, nor is deceived. The oath introduces a claim about the Prophet, and the created thing is the witness.
68:1 is the odd one: by the PEN, and by WHAT THEY WRITE. An instrument and an ongoing activity, not an object in the sky.
What the text does not do is explain why God swears at all, or why by these things. That question exercised the commentators considerably, and none of them can be quoted here: no has cleared the rights audit. Human oaths, and what happens when one is broken, are taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about expiation for a broken oath? and are not answered by these verses.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 95:1–3, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 95:1-3, 91:1-7, 68:1, 53:1-2, 75:1-2, 56:75-76, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - by + the + fig + olive; by + the + sun + brightness; by + the + pen; by + the + fig; nay + swear + by; by + the + star + setteth. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:65 - an oath by God Himself, not by a created thing; 10:5 - creation, not an oath; 16:38 - human oaths - oaths and their expiation are taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about expiation for a broken oath?; 69:38 - on-topic but general, though 69:39 adds 'and all that ye see not'; 70:40 - the oath is by the Lord of them, not by them; 90:1 - near-identical in kind to 95:3, which is kept in its passage; 96:4 - the pen as instrument, not as object of an oath.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
