By the sky and at-Tariq.
What does Surah at-Taariq say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 86:1 By the heaven and the Morning Star. This is here because it is the oath the surah is named for, and the renderings put it at different hours: "By the heaven, and that which appeareth by night" in Sale, "BY the heaven, and by the NIGHT-COMER" in Rodwell and "By the heaven and by the night star" in Palmer, against "By the heaven and the Morning Star" in Pickthall, while Itani leaves the word in Arabic in "By the sky and at-Tariq".
- 02 86:2 Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is. This is here because the question repeats each rendering's own choice rather than settling it: "But who shall teach thee what the night-comer is" in Rodwell against "Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is" in Pickthall.
- 03 86:3 The piercing Star. This is here because it is the answer given, and here the renderings agree: "It is the star of piercing brightness" in Sale, "Tis the star of piercing radiance" in Rodwell, "The star of piercing brightness" in Palmer and "The piercing Star" in Pickthall.
- 04 86:4 No human soul but hath a guardian over it. This is here because it is what the oath is sworn about, and Itani names the watcher differently: "Every soul hath a guardian set over it" in Sale and "Over every soul is set a guardian" in Rodwell, against "There is no soul without a Protector over it" in Itani.
- 05 86:5 So let man consider from what he is created. This is here because it turns the surah to what a person is made from: "Let a man consider, therefore, of what he is created" in Sale, "Let man then reflect out of what he was created" in Rodwell and "Then let man look from what he is created" in Palmer.
- 06 86:6 He is created from a gushing fluid. This is here because it is the answer to that, and the renderings name the substance differently: "He is created of seed poured forth" in Sale, "He was created of the poured-forth germs" in Rodwell, "he is created from water poured forth" in Palmer and "He is created from a gushing fluid" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about life coming from water?, with a different reason there.
- 07 86:7 That issued from between the loins and ribs. This is here because where it comes from is read differently: "issuing from the loins, and the breast-bones" in Sale and "That issued from between the loins and ribs" in Pickthall, against "Issuing from between the backbone and the breastbones" in Itani.
- 08 86:8 Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life). This is here because it is the conclusion drawn from how a person was made, and Sale alone names who is able: "Verily God is able to restore him to life" in Sale against "Verily, He is able to send him back again" in Palmer.
- 09 86:9 On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out. This is here because it says what the day will examine: "the day whereon all secret thoughts and actions shall be examined into" in Sale, "On the day when all secrets shall be searched out" in Rodwell and "on the day when the secrets shall be tried" in Palmer.
- 10 86:10 Then will he have no might nor any helper. This is here because it states what will not be available then: "he shall have no power to defend himself, nor any protector" in Sale, "and he shall have no strength nor helper" in Palmer and "Then will he have no might nor any helper" in Pickthall.
- 11 86:11 By the heaven which giveth the returning rain. This is here because it opens the second oath and Rodwell alone does not read it as rain: "By the heaven which returneth the rain" in Sale, "By the heaven that sends back the rain" in Palmer and "By the heaven which giveth the returning rain" in Pickthall, against "I swear by the heaven which accomplisheth its cycle" in Rodwell.
- 12 86:12 And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants). This is here because Sale and Pickthall supply what comes out of the earth where Palmer does not: "by the earth which openeth to let forth vegetables and springs" in Sale and "And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)" in Pickthall, with his own brackets, against "And the earth with its sprouting" in Palmer.
- 13 86:13 Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word. This is here because it states what the oath is sworn about, and Rodwell alone names the book outright: "That this Koran is a discriminating discourse" in Rodwell, where Pickthall brackets it in "this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word", against "Verily this is a discourse distinguishing good from evil" in Sale and "Verily, it is indeed a distinguishing speech" in Palmer.
- 14 86:14 It is no pleasantry. This is here because it denies that the speech is light: "it is not composed with lightness" in Sale, "and it is no frivolity" in Palmer, "It is no pleasantry" in Pickthall and "It is no joke" in Itani.
- 15 86:15 Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad). This is here because Sale alone says who plots and what against: "Verily the infidels are laying a plot to frustrate my designs" in Sale, against "Verily, they do plot a plot" in Palmer, "They plot a plot against thee" in Rodwell and "they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 16 86:16 And I plot a plot (against them). This is here because it answers that plot with another: "But I will lay a plot for their ruin" in Sale, "But I plot my plot too" in Palmer and "And I plot a plot (against them)" in Pickthall.
- 17 86:17 So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while. This is here because it closes the surah on an instruction to wait, and Sale alone names who is addressed: "Wherefore, O prophet, bear with the unbelievers" in Sale, against "Deal calmly therefore with the infidels" in Rodwell, "So give a respite to the disbelievers" in Pickthall and "give the blasphemers respite, a brief respite" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah at-Taariq is seventeen verses long. It opens on an oath by something in the night sky, turns to what a person is made of and what will be examined, swears a second time, and ends on a plot and an instruction to wait.
The renderings do not agree on what the surah is named after. At 86:1 Sale has "By the heaven, and that which appeareth by night" and Rodwell "BY the heaven, and by the NIGHT-COMER", Palmer "By the heaven and by the night star", and Itani keeps the Arabic word untranslated in "By the sky and at-Tariq" - where Pickthall has "By the heaven and the Morning Star", moving it from night to morning. 86:2 repeats each rendering's own choice back as a question, "But who shall teach thee what the night-comer is" in Rodwell against "Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is" in Pickthall, and 86:3 answers it the same way in all four public-domain renderings: "It is the star of piercing brightness" in Sale, "Tis the star of piercing radiance" in Rodwell, "The star of piercing brightness" in Palmer and "The piercing Star" in Pickthall.
86:4 states that the soul is watched, and the four public-domain renderings all call the watcher a guardian - "Every soul hath a guardian set over it" in Sale - where Itani has "There is no soul without a Protector over it".
86:5-7 turn to what a person is made from. Sale has "He is created of seed poured forth", Rodwell "He was created of the poured-forth germs", Palmer "he is created from water poured forth" and Pickthall "He is created from a gushing fluid". Where it comes from differs at 86:7: "issuing from the loins, and the breast-bones" in Sale and "That issued from between the loins and ribs" in Pickthall, against "Issuing from between the backbone and the breastbones" in Itani. The study What does the Qur'an say about life coming from water? carries 86:6 with its own reason.
86:8-10 draw the consequence. "Verily God is able to restore him to life" in Sale names God where Palmer has only "Verily, He is able to send him back again"; then comes a day described as "the day whereon all secret thoughts and actions shall be examined into" in Sale and "on the day when the secrets shall be tried" in Palmer, on which "he shall have no power to defend himself, nor any protector".
The second oath runs at 86:11-12, and Rodwell alone does not read it as rain: "By the heaven which returneth the rain" in Sale, "By the heaven that sends back the rain" in Palmer and "By the heaven which giveth the returning rain" in Pickthall, against "I swear by the heaven which accomplisheth its cycle" in Rodwell. At 86:12 Sale supplies what comes out of the earth, "by the earth which openeth to let forth vegetables and springs", where Palmer has only "And the earth with its sprouting" and Pickthall puts his addition in his own brackets: "And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)".
What the oath is sworn about is stated at 86:13-14, and Rodwell alone names the book: "That this Koran is a discriminating discourse", where Pickthall brackets the same word in "this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word", Sale has "Verily this is a discourse distinguishing good from evil", Palmer "Verily, it is indeed a distinguishing speech" and Itani "It is a Decisive Word". It is then denied to be light: "it is not composed with lightness" in Sale, "and it is no frivolity" in Palmer, "It is no pleasantry" in Pickthall and "It is no joke" in Itani.
The surah closes on a plot at 86:15-17. Sale alone says who is plotting and what against - "Verily the infidels are laying a plot to frustrate my designs" - where Palmer has only "Verily, they do plot a plot", Rodwell "They plot a plot against thee" and Pickthall "they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)" in his own brackets. The answering plot is "But I will lay a plot for their ruin" in Sale and "But I plot my plot too" in Palmer. The instruction at 86:17 is to wait: "Wherefore, O prophet, bear with the unbelievers" in Sale, which alone names who is addressed, against "Deal calmly therefore with the infidels" in Rodwell, "So give a respite to the disbelievers" in Pickthall and "give the blasphemers respite, a brief respite" in Itani.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not settle which body in the sky the surah is named after, beyond showing that the renderings themselves disagree. It does not say who was plotting, or when: filling that in needs an occasion of revelation or a biography, and this study holds neither in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 86:1, widening across 17 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 86:1-17, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all seventeen verses of Surah at-Taariq, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
