Let man consider what he was created from.
Does the Qur'an say semen comes from between the backbone and the ribs (86:6-7)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 86:5 The passage opens with a call to consider what man is made from. Itani has "Let man consider what he was created from".
- 02 86:6–7 At 86:6 Itani has "gushing liquid", and Pickthall has "a gushing fluid". At 86:7 Itani has "Issuing from between the backbone and the breastbones", Pickthall has "from between the loins and ribs", Rodwell has "from the loins and breastbones", and Sale has "from the loins, and the breast-bones".
- 03 32:8 Pickthall has "a draught of despised fluid", and Palmer has "an extract of despicable water". The verse names the fluid but no place it comes from.
- 04 77:20–21 At 77:20 Pickthall has "Did We not create you from a base fluid", and at 77:21 Itani has "Then lodged it in a secure place". The pair names the fluid and where it is kept, not where it comes from.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question asks whether 86:6-7 says that semen comes from between the backbone and the ribs. The five renderings name the fluid at 86:6 and where it issues from at 86:7.
At 86:6 Itani has "gushing liquid", Pickthall has "a gushing fluid", and Palmer has "water poured forth". The word semen is not used at these verses in any of the five.
At 86:7 Itani has "Issuing from between the backbone and the breastbones", and Pickthall has "from between the loins and ribs". The wording of the question is close to these two. Palmer prints the loins and the breast bones with "between"; Rodwell and Sale print the loins and the breastbones without that word.
The five do not say whose backbone, loins or breastbones these are, and they say nothing more of the fluid's path. At 32:8 and 77:20-21 the fluid is named as despised or base, and as lodged in a safe place; no source is named there.
Whether this wording agrees with anatomy is a comparison outside these five renderings. This study shows what they print and stops there.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 86:5, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.
CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question quotes 86:6-7, so the set starts there, with 86:5, which opens the passage. 32:8 and 77:20-21 are carried because they also name the fluid man is made from; they show what the text says, or does not say, about its source. Probes were run on all five renderings, whole word. 'backbone|loins|spine' returns 14 lines at 4 verses, and 'ribs|breast-bones?|breastbones?|breast' returns 39 lines at 21 verses. 86:7 is the only verse found by both. 'semen' returns 1 line, at a verse that does not speak of the fluid's source. This study does not compare the text with anatomy; that comparison lies outside the five renderings.
