What is the story of the Companions of the Cave?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 18:9–12 Or deemest thou that THE PEOPLE OF THE CAVE AND THE INSCRIPTION are a wonder among Our portents? When the young men fled for refuge to the Cave and said: our Lord, give us mercy from Thy presence and shape for us right conduct in our plight. THEN WE SEALED UP THEIR HEARING IN THE CAVE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the opening question deflates the story before it is told, and because their prayer is the only thing they say before sleeping.
  2. 02 18:13–16 We narrate unto thee their story with truth. They were YOUTHS WHO BELIEVED IN THEIR LORD, and We increased them in guidance. AND WE MADE FIRM THEIR HEARTS when they stood forth and said: our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. In as ONE PASSAGE because it states who they were and what was done for them.
  3. 03 18:17–18 And thou wouldst have deemed them waking though they were asleep, AND WE CAUSED THEM TO TURN OVER TO THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT, AND THEIR DOG STRETCHING OUT HIS PAWS ON THE THRESHOLD. In because it is the most physical and most affectionate detail in the passage, and because the dog is in it.
  4. 04 18:19–20 And in like manner We awakened them that they might question one another. A speaker from among them said: HOW LONG HAVE YE TARRIED? They said: we have tarried a day or some part of a day. They said: YOUR LORD BEST KNOWETH WHAT YE HAVE TARRIED. Now send one of you with this your silver coin unto the city, and let him see what food is purest there and bring you a supply thereof. In as ONE PASSAGE because the misjudged interval and the practical errand belong together.
  5. 05 18:22–26 Some say: they were three, their dog the fourth; and some say five, their dog the sixth, GUESSING AT RANDOM; and some say seven, and their dog the eighth. Say: MY LORD IS BEST AWARE OF THEIR NUMBER. None knoweth them save a few. So contend not concerning them except with an outward contending, AND ASK NOT ANY OF THEM TO PRONOUNCE CONCERNING THEM. And they tarried in their Cave three hundred years and add nine. SAY: GOD IS BEST AWARE HOW LONG THEY TARRIED. In as ONE PASSAGE because the text lists the competing counts, refuses to settle them, gives a number of years and then declines to affirm that too.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The most striking thing about this passage is how much of it is the Qur'an refusing to tell the story.

It opens by deflating it. 18:9: OR DEEMEST THOU THAT THE PEOPLE OF THE CAVE AND THE INSCRIPTION ARE A WONDER AMONG OUR PORTENTS? Before narrating anything, the text suggests this is not the most remarkable thing it has to offer.

The narrative itself is spare. Young men who believed, who fled to a cave, whose hearing was sealed for a number of years, who woke and misjudged how long they had slept - A DAY OR SOME PART OF A DAY - and whose first practical act was to send someone for food with a silver coin.

18:18 is the detail everyone remembers: they seemed awake though asleep, turned over to the right and the left, and THEIR DOG STRETCHING OUT HIS PAWS ON THE THRESHOLD.

And then 18:22, which is the most unusual passage of its kind in the book. It lists the guesses about how many they were - three and their dog the fourth, five and their dog the sixth, seven and their dog the eighth - and comments on one of them in the middle: GUESSING AT RANDOM. The reply is MY LORD IS BEST AWARE OF THEIR NUMBER, and the instruction is CONTEND NOT CONCERNING THEM EXCEPT WITH AN OUTWARD CONTENDING, AND ASK NOT ANY OF THEM TO PRONOUNCE.

Then 18:25 gives a figure - three hundred years and add nine - and 18:26 immediately says: SAY, GOD IS BEST AWARE HOW LONG THEY TARRIED.

A story is told, the disputes about its details are catalogued, the details are declared unknowable, and the reader is instructed not to argue about them. It is the clearest model in the Qur'an for how to hold a narrative whose particulars are not established.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 18:9–12, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

18:15 (Μετά είπαν μεταξύ τους): «Αυτοί είναι οι άνθρωποι του λαού μας, έχουν πάρει εκτός Αυτού άλλους θεούς (για λατρεία). Θα μπορούσαν να φέρουν σαφείς αποδείξεις σχετικά μ' αυτούς (ότι αξίζουν τη λατρεία); [Όχι βεβαίως]. Ποιος είναι λοιπόν πιο άδικος απ' εκείνον που κατασκευάζει ψέματα εναντίον του Αλλάχ;

18:16 16. (Jauni vyrai tarė vienas kitam): „Ir kai jūs pasitraukiate nuo jų ir to, ką jie garbina, išskyrus Allahą, tada ieškokite prieglobsčio Urve. Jūsų Viešpats atvers jums kelią iš Savo Gailestingumo ir palengvins jums jūsų reikalus (t. y. suteiks jums tai, ko jums reikia aprūpinimui, būstui).“

You would have seen the sun, when it rose, veering away from their cave towards the right, and when it sets, moving away from them to the left, as they lay in the midst of the cave. And thou mightest have seen the sun when it rose move away from their cave to the right, and when it set go past them on the left, and they were in the cleft thereof.

Po t'i kishe parë, do të ikje prej tyre i mbushur plot frikë.

Talal Itani2012 You would have seen the sun, when it rose, veering away from their cave towards the right, and when it sets, moving away from them to the left, as they lay in the midst of the cave. That was one of God's wonders. He whom God guides is truly guided; but he whom He misguides, for him you will find no directing friend.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And thou mightest have seen the sun when it rose move away from their cave to the right, and when it set go past them on the left, and they were in the cleft thereof. That was (one) of the portents of Allah. He whom Allah guideth, he indeed is led aright, and he whom He sendeth astray, for him thou wilt not find a guiding friend

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And thou mightst have seen the sun when it rose decline from their cave towards the right hand, and when it set leave them on the left hand, while they were in the spacious part thereof. That is one of the signs of God. Whom God guides he is guided indeed, and whom He leads astray thou shalt surely find for him no patron to guide aright

John Medows Rodwell1861 And thou mightest have seen the sun when it arose, pass on the right of their cave, and when it set, leave them on the left, while they were in its spacious chamber. This is one of the signs of God. Guided indeed is he whom God guideth; but for him whom He misleadeth, thou shalt by no means find a patron, director

George Sale1734 And thou mightest have seen the sun, when it had risen, to decline from their cave towards the right hand; and when it went down, to leave them on the left hand: And they were in the spacious part of the cave. This was one of the signs of God. Whomsoever God shall direct, he shall be rightly directed; and whomsoever He shall cause to err, thou shalt not find any to defend or to direct

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

As they were disputing their case among themselves, they said, "Build over them a building." Their Lord knows best about them. Those who prevailed over their case said, "We will set up over them a place of worship."

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:9-12, 18:13-16, 18:17-18, 18:19-20, 18:22-26, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - people + of + the + cave; three + hundred + years + and + add + nine; we + sealed + up + their + hearing + in + the + cave; their + dog + stretching + out + his + paws; how + long + have + ye + tarried. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 23:112 - a different question, put at the Judgment.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
