What does the Qur'an say about dreams - and Joseph's gift of reading them?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 12:4–6 O my father, I SAW IN A DREAM ELEVEN PLANETS AND THE SUN AND THE MOON, I saw them prostrating themselves unto me. He said: O my dear son, TELL NOT THY BRETHREN OF THY VISION, lest they plot a plot against thee... THUS THY LORD WILL PREFER THEE AND WILL TEACH THEE THE INTERPRETATION OF EVENTS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the gift is announced at the same moment as the first dream, and the father's caution shows a dream being treated as dangerous information.
  2. 02 12:36–37 And two young men went to prison with him. One of them said: I DREAMED THAT I WAS PRESSING WINE. The other said: I dreamed that I was carrying upon my head bread whereof the birds were eating. Announce unto us the interpretation. He said: THE FOOD WHICH YE ARE GIVEN WILL NOT COME UNTO YOU BUT I SHALL TELL YOU THE INTERPRETATION ERE IT COMETH UNTO YOU. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only place the Qur'an narrates the practice of interpretation being requested and performed.
  3. 03 12:43–44 And the king said: lo, I SAW IN A DREAM SEVEN FAT KINE WHICH SEVEN LEAN WERE EATING, and seven green ears of corn and other dry. O notables, expound for me my vision, if ye can interpret dreams. They answered: JUMBLED DREAMS! AND WE ARE NOT KNOWING IN THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the court's failure is what makes Joseph necessary, and their excuse - calling it jumbled - is what an interpreter says when they cannot.
  4. 04 12:46–49 Joseph! O thou truthful one! Expound for us the seven fat kine... He said: ye shall sow seven years as usual, but that which ye reap leave it in the ear, all save a little which ye eat. Then after that will come seven hard years... THEN, AFTER THAT, WILL COME A YEAR WHEN THE PEOPLE WILL HAVE PLENTEOUS CROPS AND WILL PRESS WINE AND OIL. In as ONE PASSAGE because Joseph's answer is not merely a reading but a POLICY - store the grain in the ear - and because he adds a year the king never dreamed.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an's fullest treatment of dreams is a single surah, and what it shows is less a mystical gift than a competence with consequences.

12:4-6 sets it up. Joseph dreams of eleven planets, the sun and the moon prostrating. His father's first reaction is not wonder - it is TELL NOT THY BRETHREN OF THY VISION, LEST THEY PLOT A PLOT AGAINST THEE. A dream is treated at once as dangerous information. And in the same breath the gift is announced: THY LORD WILL TEACH THEE THE INTERPRETATION OF EVENTS.

12:36 shows the practice in prison. Two men describe dreams - pressing wine, birds eating bread from a head - and ask for readings. Joseph's reply before he answers is worth noting: he says he will tell them the interpretation before their next meal arrives, and then preaches to them first.

12:43-44 is the failure that makes him famous. The king dreams of seven fat cows eaten by seven lean, and seven green ears and seven dry. His court cannot read it and says so in the phrase the Qur'an uses elsewhere for worthless dreams: JUMBLED DREAMS - AND WE ARE NOT KNOWING IN THE INTERPRETATION.

And 12:47-49 is Joseph's answer, which is the point of the whole thing. He does not merely decode the symbols. He gives a POLICY: sow seven years as usual, and LEAVE WHAT YOU REAP IN THE EAR except a little you eat. Storage advice, with a technical detail about keeping grain in the husk. And then he adds something the king did not dream at all - a year after the famine when rain comes and people press wine and oil.

The gift, as the surah presents it, is reading a dream and knowing what to do about it.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 12:4–6, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

12:46 (Shërbëtori tha:) "O i drejti Jusuf!

Talal Itani2012 He said, "What was the matter with you, women, when you tried to seduce Joseph?" They said, "God forbid! We knew of no evil committed by him." The governor's wife then said, "Now the truth is out. It was I who tried to seduce him, and he is telling the truth."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 He (the king) (then sent for those women and) said: What happened when ye asked an evil act of Joseph? They answered: Allah Blameless! We know no evil of him. Said the wife of the ruler: Now the truth is out. I asked of him an evil act, and he is surely of the truthful

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He said, 'What was your design when ye desired Joseph for his person?' They said, 'God forbid! we know no bad of him.' Said the wife of the prince, ' Now does the truth appear! I desired him for his person and, verily, he is of those who tell the truth

John Medows Rodwell1861 Then said the Prince to the women, "What was your purpose when ye solicited Joseph?" They said, "God keep us! we know not any ill of him." The wife of the Prince said, "Now doth the truth appear. It was I who would have led him into unlawful love, and he is one of the truthful

George Sale1734 And when the women were assembled before the king, he said unto them, what was your design, when ye solicited Joseph to unlawful love? They answered, God be praise! We know not any ill of him. The nobleman's wife said, now is the truth become manifest: I solicited him, to lie with me; and he is one of those who speak truth

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 12:4-6, 12:36-37, 12:43-44, 12:46-49, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - teach + thee + the + interpretation + of + events; seven + fat + kine; i + saw + eleven + planets; expound + for + us + the + dream; press + wine. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
