He said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble, and my hair is aflame with gray, and never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to you.
Does the Qur'an forbid dyeing hair?
In short
- The text says: Zechariah says his hair is aflame with grey (19:4); God gives weakness and grey hair after strength (30:54); and 2:138 names God's colouring, where the renderings differ between a colouring, a dye and a baptism.
- The text does not say: anything about dyeing the hair.
- The rest comes from: two reports outside the Qur'an, set out in full below: dyeing hair (Bukhari 3462) and white hair (Muslim 2102a).
Hadith references link to sunnah.com. Any grading shown there is that site's, not AALAMIN's.
Where the renderings split
2:138, Itani: "God's coloring"
2:138, Pickthall: "(We take our) colour from Allah"
2:138, Palmer: "The dye of God!"
2:138, Rodwell: "Islam is the Baptism of God"
2:138, Sale: "The baptism of God have we received"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text names grey hair twice. At 19:4 Zechariah says, in Pickthall, "my head is shining with grey hair", and in Sale "my head is become white with hoariness"; at 30:54 grey hair comes with the weakness after strength. Neither verse says anything about changing its colour.
The one verse where a translator has a dye is 2:138, and it is not about hair: Palmer has "The dye of God!" at 2:138, where Itani has "God's coloring", Rodwell "Islam is the Baptism of God" and Sale "The baptism of God have we received".
No verse forbids dyeing the hair, and none commands it. Outside the Qur'an, a report in which the Prophet is quoted as saying that the Jews and the Christians do not dye their grey hair, so do the opposite, is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 60: Prophets (Bukhari 3462); a report that he asked for the white hair and beard of Abu Bakr's father to be changed with something is in Sahih Muslim, Book 37: The Book of Clothes and Adornment (Muslim 2102a).
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 19:4, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered

If they believe in the same as you have believed in, then they have been guided. But if they turn away, then they are in schism. God will protect you against them; for He is the Hearer, the Knower.
And if they believe in the like of that which ye believe, then are they rightly guided. But if they turn away, then are they in schism, and Allah will suffice thee (for defence) against them. He is the Hearer, the Knower
If they believe in that in which ye believe, then are they guided; but if they turn back, then are they only in a schism, and God will suffice thee against them, for He both hears and knows
If therefore they believe even as ye believe, then have they true guidance; but if they turn back, then do they cut themselves off from you: and God will suffice to protect thee against them, for He is the Hearer, the Knower
Now if they believe according to what ye believe, they are surely directed, but if they turn back, they are in schism. God shall support thee against them, for he is the hearer, the wise

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an forbids dyeing hair. The probe for dye and its forms returns one row, Palmer's at 2:138, carried here.
This study names two reports outside the Qur'an and does not grade them.
