A mention of the mercy of your Lord towards His servant Zechariah.
What does the Qur'an say about Zachariah and John (Yahya)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 19:2–9 A mention of the mercy of thy Lord unto His servant Zachariah, when he cried unto his Lord A CRY IN SECRET, saying: my Lord, MY BONES HAVE GROWN FEEBLE AND MY HEAD IS SHINING WITH GREY HAIR, and I have never been unblest in prayer to Thee, my Lord... So give me from Thy presence a successor... O Zachariah, WE BRING THEE TIDINGS OF A SON WHOSE NAME IS JOHN; WE HAVE GIVEN THE SAME NAME TO NONE BEFORE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the prayer and its answer are one movement, and because the prayer is unusually physical about old age.
- 02 19:10–11 He said: my Lord, appoint for me some token. He said: THY TOKEN IS THAT THOU, WITH NO BODILY DEFECT, SHALT NOT SPEAK UNTO MANKIND THREE NIGHTS. Then he came forth unto his people from the sanctuary, AND SIGNIFIED TO THEM: GLORIFY YOUR LORD AT BREAK OF DAY AND FALL OF NIGHT. In as ONE PASSAGE because the sign is a three-day silence and the next verse shows him signalling rather than speaking.
- 03 19:12–15 O JOHN, HOLD FAST THE SCRIPTURE. And We gave him wisdom WHEN A CHILD, and compassion from Our presence, and purity; and he was devout, and dutiful toward his parents. AND HE WAS NOT ARROGANT, REBELLIOUS. Peace on him the day he was born, and the day he dieth, and the day he shall be raised alive. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the whole of what the Qur'an says about John, and its terms are compassion, purity and not being arrogant.
- 04 3:38–41 Then Zachariah prayed unto his Lord and said: my Lord, bestow upon me of Thy bounty goodly offspring. Lo, Thou art the Hearer of Prayer. And the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: GOD GIVETH THEE GLAD TIDINGS OF JOHN, who cometh to confirm a word from God, LORDLY, CHASTE, A PROPHET OF THE RIGHTEOUS. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the other telling and adds the description of John's office.
- 05 21:89–90 And Zachariah, when he cried unto his Lord: my Lord, leave me not childless, though Thou art the best of inheritors. Then We heard his prayer, and bestowed upon him John... LO, THEY USED TO VIE ONE WITH THE OTHER IN GOOD DEEDS, AND THEY CRIED UNTO US IN LONGING AND IN FEAR, and were submissive unto Us. In as ONE PASSAGE because the closing description covers the whole family.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and the most affecting thing in them is how ordinary the complaint is.
19:4 has Zachariah praying, and the words he uses are physical and undignified: MY BONES HAVE GROWN FEEBLE AND MY HEAD IS SHINING WITH GREY HAIR. He is old, he says so specifically, and he adds - I HAVE NEVER BEEN UNBLEST IN PRAYER TO THEE. It is an argument from a long record of answered prayers.
19:3 notes that he cried A CRY IN SECRET.
The answer names the child in advance and adds something said of no one else: WE HAVE GIVEN THE SAME NAME TO NONE BEFORE.
He asks for a sign and receives one that is also a restriction: 19:10 - THOU SHALT NOT SPEAK UNTO MANKIND THREE NIGHTS, WITH NO BODILY DEFECT. And 19:11 shows him coming out of the sanctuary and SIGNIFYING to the people - gesturing - to glorify God morning and evening.
Of John himself the Qur'an says little and what it says is unusual. 19:12: O JOHN, HOLD FAST THE SCRIPTURE - and We gave him wisdom WHEN A CHILD. Then the qualities: compassion, purity, devotion, dutifulness to parents - AND HE WAS NOT ARROGANT, REBELLIOUS. Two of the five terms are about how he treated other people, and one is a negation.
19:15 gives him the same threefold peace the Qur'an gives Jesus at 19:33: the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive.
21:90 closes with a description of the household: THEY USED TO VIE WITH ONE ANOTHER IN GOOD DEEDS, AND THEY CRIED UNTO US IN LONGING AND IN FEAR.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 19:2–9, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Taigi suteik man iš Savęs įpėdinį.
19:9 9. Jis tarė: „Taigi (tai bus). Tavo Viešpats sako: tai lengva Man, be abejonės, Aš sukūriau tave prieš tai, kai tu buvai niekas!”

Jaallatamaa isa taasisi.”
19:7 (kadhaa isaa qeebalee Rabbiin ni jedheen): “Yaa Zakariyyaa!

19:4 Akasema: Mola wangu Mlezi!
Basi nitunuku mrithi kutoka kwako.
19:6 Anirithi na awarithi ukoo wa Yaaqub. Na umjaalie ewe Mola wangu Mlezi awe mwenye kuridhisha.
19:7 (Akaambiwa): Ewe Zakariya! Hakika Sisi tunakubashiria mwana; jina lake ni Yahya. Hatujapata kumpa jina hilo yeyote kabla yake.
19:8 Akasema: Ewe Mola wangu Mlezi!
19:5 Jag oroar mig så för vad som kommer att hända med mina släktingars [tro] efter min bortgång och min hustru är ofruktsam. Så skänk mig, från din nåd, en [son som] kan ta över min roll;

3:40 "Gospodaru moj", reče on, "odakle ću ja imati sina kada me starost ophrvala, a i žena mi je nerotkinja?" "Eto tako", reče On, "Allah čini što On hoće."
3:41 "Gospodaru moj", zamoli Zekerijja, "daj mi neki znak!" I mnogo spominji Gospodara svoga i hvali Ga krajem dana i rano ujutro."

3:40 40. Jis tarė: „Mano Viešpatie, kaip aš galiu turėti sūnų, kai esu labai senas ir mano žmona nebevaisinga?“ (Allahas) tarė: „Taigi, Allahas daro tai, ką Jis nori.“
3:41 41. Jis tarė: „Mano Viešpatie, duok man ženklą.“ (Allahas) tarė: „Tavo ženklas bus tai, kad tu nekalbėsi su žmonėmis tris dienas, išskyrus ženklais. Ir dažnai prisimink savo Viešpatį (šlovindamas Jį vėl ir vėl) ir garbink (Jį) popietę ir rytą.“
3:38 Bakka sanatti Zakariyyaan Rabbii isaa kadhate “Gooftaa kiyya! Ati Suma biraa ilmaan gaarii naaf kenni. Ati dhagayaa kadhaati" jedhe.

3:40 (Inni) nijedhe “yaa Gooftaa kiyya! akkamitti ilmi naaf taha? osoo dullumti na qabee jiruufi niitiin tiyyas maseena taatee jirtuu " jedhe. (Rabbiin) “Akka kanatti Rabbiin waan fedhe hojjata” jedheen.

3:38 Pale pale Zakariya akamwomba Mola wake Mlezi, akasema: Mola wangu Mlezi! Nitunuku kutoka kwako dhuria njema. Hakika, Wewe ndiye unayesikia maombi.
3:40 Zakariya akasema: Mola wangu Mlezi! Akasema: Hivyo ndivyo Mwenyezi Mungu, yeye hufanya apendavyo.
3:41 Akasema: Mola wangu Mlezi! Niwekee alama.
3:38 Zekeriya orada Rabbine dua etti: "Rabbim!

Her Lord accepted her with a gracious reception, and brought her a beautiful upbringing, and entrusted her to the care of Zechariah. Whenever Zechariah entered upon her in the sanctuary, he found her with provision. He said, "O Mary, where did you get this from?" She said, "It is from God; God provides to whom He wills without reckoning."
And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will
And her Lord received her with a good reception, and made her grow up with a good growth, and Zachariah took care of her. Whenever Zachariah entered the chamber to her he found beside her a provision, and said, 'O Mary, how hast thou this?' She said, 'It is from God, for God provides for whom He pleases without count
So with goodly acceptance did her Lord accept her, and with goodly growth did he make her grow. Zacharias reared her. So oft as Zacharias went in to Mary at the sanctuary, he found her supplied with food. "Oh, Mary!" said he, "whence hast thou this?" She said, "It is from God; for God supplieth whom He will, without reckoning
Therefore the Lord accepted her with a gracious acceptance, and caused her to bear an excellent offspring. And Zacharias took care of the child; whenever Zacharias went into the chamber to her, he found provisions with her: And he said, O Mary, whence hadst thou this? She answered, this is from God: For God provideth for whom he pleaseth without measure

21:89 I spomeni Zekerijjaa, kada pozva Gospodara svoga: “Gospodaru moj, ne ostavljaj me samog, Ti si najbolji Nasljednik!’’

21:89 Zakariyyaas (yaadadhu); yeroo inni Gooftaa isaatti lallabee “Gooftaa kiyya! Kophaa (ilma malee) nan dhiisin; Ati irra caalaa dhaaltotaati” (jedhe).
21:90 Isaaf awwaannee Yahyaa isaaf kennine, Niitii isaas (akka deessu) isaaf tolchine, Isaan (nabiyyoonni) toltuu keessatti kan daddafan ta'an, kajeellaafi sodaan (guutamanii) kan Nu kadhatan turan, Nuuf sodaatoo turan.
21:89 Zekeriya’yı da an. Hani o, Rabbine, “Rabbim!

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 19:2-9, 19:10-11, 19:12-15, 3:38-41, 21:89-90, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - zachariah; o + zachariah + we + bring + thee + tidings; john + take + the + scripture; my + bones + have + grown + feeble; a + sign + that + thou + shalt + not + speak + unto + mankind + three. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 6:85 - a list of names.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
