And they followed what the devils taught during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but it was the devils who disbelieved. They taught the people witchcraft and what was revealed in Babylon to the two angels Harut and Marut. They did not teach anybody until they had said, "We are a test, so do not lose faith." But they learned from them the means to cause separation between man and his wife. But they cannot harm anyone except with God's permission. And they learned what would harm them and not benefit them. Yet they knew that whoever deals in it will have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable is what they sold their souls for, if they only knew.
Who were Harut and Marut, and what did they teach?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:102 And follow that which the devils falsely related against the kingdom of Solomon. SOLOMON DISBELIEVED NOT; BUT THE DEVILS DISBELIEVED, TEACHING MANKIND MAGIC and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babel, HARUT AND MARUT. NOR DID THEY TEACH IT TO ANYONE TILL THEY HAD SAID: WE ARE ONLY A TEMPTATION, THEREFORE DISBELIEVE NOT. And from these two they learn that by which they cause division between man and wife; but they injure thereby no one save by God's leave. And they learn that which harmeth them and profiteth them not. AND SURELY THEY DO KNOW THAT HE WHO TRAFFICKETH THEREIN WILL HAVE NO SHARE IN THE HEREAFTER. In because the entire account is in this one verse and nothing outside it adds anything - it must be carried whole or not at all.
- 02 20:69 And throw that which is in thy right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. Lo, that which they have made is BUT A WIZARD'S ARTIFICE, AND A WIZARD SHALL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL TO WHATEVER POINT HE MAY ATTAIN. This verse calls what they have made a wizard's artifice and says a wizard shall not be successful. The verses that follow it, 20:70-71, are in What does the Qur'an say about magic?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Everything the Qur'an says about them is in one verse, and the verse is dense enough that it repays reading clause by clause.
2:102 is correcting a story. People followed WHAT THE DEVILS FALSELY RELATED AGAINST THE KINGDOM OF SOLOMON - so the first move is to clear Solomon: SOLOMON DISBELIEVED NOT; BUT THE DEVILS DISBELIEVED, TEACHING MANKIND MAGIC.
Then the two are named: what was revealed to THE TWO ANGELS IN BABEL, HARUT AND MARUT. The translators render the pair as angels, and the verse says the knowledge was SENT DOWN to them.
Then the clause that makes them strange: NOR DID THEY TEACH IT TO ANYONE TILL THEY HAD SAID: WE ARE ONLY A TEMPTATION, THEREFORE DISBELIEVE NOT. They warned every student before teaching. The warning is part of the transaction.
Then what is learned: that BY WHICH THEY CAUSE DIVISION BETWEEN MAN AND WIFE. The one effect the Qur'an specifies for magic anywhere is the breaking of a marriage.
Then the limit: THEY INJURE THEREBY NO ONE SAVE BY GOD'S LEAVE.
And the verdict, which the verse says the practitioners themselves know: HE WHO TRAFFICKETH THEREIN WILL HAVE NO SHARE IN THE HEREAFTER. They learn WHAT HARMETH THEM AND PROFITETH THEM NOT.
The Qur'an says nothing else about them - no story, no reason for their being sent, no outcome. The elaborate narratives about them belong to later literature, and none has cleared the rights audit. The study What does the Qur'an say about magic? carries the wider subject.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:102, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation
2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And follow that which the devils falsely related against the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon disbelieved not; but the devils disbelieved, teaching mankind magic and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babel, Harut and Marut. Nor did they (the two angels) teach it to anyone till they had said: We are only a temptation, therefore disbelieve not (in the guidance of Allah). And from these two (angles) people learn that by which they cause division between man and wife; but they injure thereby no-one save by Allah's leave. And they learn that which harmeth them and profiteth them not. And surely they do know that he who trafficketh therein will have no (happy) portion in the Hereafter; and surely evil is the price for which they sell their souls, if they but knew
And they follow that which the devils recited against Solomons kingdom;- it was not Solomon who misbelieved, but the devils who misbelieved, teaching men sorcery,- and what has been revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut; yet these taught no one until they said, 'We are but a temptation, so do not misbelieve.' Men learn from them only that by which they may part man and wife; but they can harm no one therewith, unless with the permission of God, and they learn what hurts them and profits them not. And yet they knew that he who purchased it would have no portion in the future; but sad is the price at which they have sold their souls, had they but known
And they followed what the Satans read in the reign of Solomon: not that Solomon was unbelieving, but the Satans were unbelieving. Sorcery did they teach to men, and what had been revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, at Babel. Yet no man did these two teach until they had said, "We are only a temptation. Be not then an unbeliever." From these two did men learn how to cause division between man and wife: but unless by leave of God, no man did they harm thereby. They learned, indeed, what would harm and not profit them; and yet they knew that he who bought that art should have no part in the life to come! And vile the price for which they have sold themselves, - if they had but known it
And they followed the device which the devils devised against the kingdom of Solomon; and Solomon was not an unbeliever; but the devils believed not, they taught men sorcery, and that which was sent down to the two angels at Babel, Harut and Marut: Yet those two taught no man until they had said, verily we are a temptation, therefore be not an unbeliever. So men learned from those two a charm by which they might cause division between a man and his wife; but they hurt none thereby, unless by God's permission; and they learned that which would hurt them, and not profit them; and yet they knew that he who bought that art should have no part in the life to come, and woful is the price for which they have sold their souls, if they knew it

Ata ndoqën shpifjet e shejtanëve lidhur me mbretërinë e Sulejmanit.

A to nije objavljeno dvojici meleka.

Throw that which is in thy right hand! It will eat up that which they have made. Lo! that which they have made is but a wizard's artifice, and a wizard shall not be successful to whatever point (of skill) he may attain
Throw down what is in thy right hand; and it shall devour what they have made. Verily, what they have made is but a magician's trick; and no magician shall prosper wherever he comes
Cast forth then what is in thy right hand: it shall swallow up what they have produced: they have only produced the deceit of an enchanter: and come where he may, ill shall an enchanter fare

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:102, 20:69, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - harut + and + marut; the + two + angels + in + babel; we + are + only + a + temptation + therefore + disbelieve + not. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim that the Arabic term for the pair has been read otherwise was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it; at 20:69, the reason said another study carries this verse, which it does not; it now names the verses that study does carry. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
