And they followed what the devils taught during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but it was the devils who disbelieved. They taught the people witchcraft and what was revealed in Babylon to the two angels Harut and Marut. They did not teach anybody until they had said, "We are a test, so do not lose faith." But they learned from them the means to cause separation between man and his wife. But they cannot harm anyone except with God's permission. And they learned what would harm them and not benefit them. Yet they knew that whoever deals in it will have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable is what they sold their souls for, if they only knew.
What does the Qur'an say about magic?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:102 The longest statement in the set: what the devils related against Solomon, the teaching of magic, and the two angels at Babel. In because it is the only verse here that describes magic being taught rather than alleged.
- 02 10:76 When the truth came to them they said, this is manifest sorcery. In because it is the set's plainest example of the charge being made against revelation.
- 03 10:77 Moses answers the charge and adds that sorcerers do not prosper. In because the reply and the charge stand together.
- 04 20:70 The magicians fall prostrate and say they believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses. In because the practitioners are the ones who concede.
- 05 20:71 Pharaoh accuses them of believing before he gave leave, and calls Moses their chief who taught them magic. In because the same accusation is turned back on the accuser.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Magic appears in these verses mostly as an accusation, and twice as something taught.
Three of them are the charge being made against revelation. When the truth came, they called it manifest sorcery (10:76), and Moses answers by asking whether they say this of the truth, adding that sorcerers do not prosper (10:77). Pharaoh accuses Moses of being the chief who taught the magicians (20:71) - and the magicians themselves have just fallen prostrate saying they believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses (20:70). The practitioners are the ones who concede.
2:102 is the exception, and the longest: what the devils related against the kingdom of Solomon, the teaching of magic to mankind, and what was revealed to the two angels at Babel, Harut and Marut.
What these verses do not give is a definition or a ruling in general terms. Sale and Rodwell mostly render sorcery where Pickthall has magic, and the study does not treat the two as settled equivalents.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: no source has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read them: no has cleared it either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:102, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And follow that which the devils falsely related against the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon disbelieved not; but the devils disbelieved, teaching mankind magic and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babel, Harut and Marut. Nor did they (the two angels) teach it to anyone till they had said: We are only a temptation, therefore disbelieve not (in the guidance of Allah). And from these two (angles) people learn that by which they cause division between man and wife; but they injure thereby no-one save by Allah's leave. And they learn that which harmeth them and profiteth them not. And surely they do know that he who trafficketh therein will have no (happy) portion in the Hereafter; and surely evil is the price for which they sell their souls, if they but knew
And they follow that which the devils recited against Solomons kingdom;- it was not Solomon who misbelieved, but the devils who misbelieved, teaching men sorcery,- and what has been revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut; yet these taught no one until they said, 'We are but a temptation, so do not misbelieve.' Men learn from them only that by which they may part man and wife; but they can harm no one therewith, unless with the permission of God, and they learn what hurts them and profits them not. And yet they knew that he who purchased it would have no portion in the future; but sad is the price at which they have sold their souls, had they but known
And they followed what the Satans read in the reign of Solomon: not that Solomon was unbelieving, but the Satans were unbelieving. Sorcery did they teach to men, and what had been revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, at Babel. Yet no man did these two teach until they had said, "We are only a temptation. Be not then an unbeliever." From these two did men learn how to cause division between man and wife: but unless by leave of God, no man did they harm thereby. They learned, indeed, what would harm and not profit them; and yet they knew that he who bought that art should have no part in the life to come! And vile the price for which they have sold themselves, - if they had but known it
And they followed the device which the devils devised against the kingdom of Solomon; and Solomon was not an unbeliever; but the devils believed not, they taught men sorcery, and that which was sent down to the two angels at Babel, Harut and Marut: Yet those two taught no man until they had said, verily we are a temptation, therefore be not an unbeliever. So men learned from those two a charm by which they might cause division between a man and his wife; but they hurt none thereby, unless by God's permission; and they learned that which would hurt them, and not profit them; and yet they knew that he who bought that art should have no part in the life to come, and woful is the price for which they have sold their souls, if they knew it

Ata ndoqën shpifjet e shejtanëve lidhur me mbretërinë e Sulejmanit.

A to nije objavljeno dvojici meleka.

They said, 'Hast thou come to turn us away from what we found our fathers at, that there may be for you twain grandeur in the earth? but we will not believe you

(Fir’awn) (mormee sodaachisuuf) ni jedhe: “Odoo ani isiniif hin hayyamin isatti amantanii? inni guddaa keessan kan falfala isin barsiiseedha, harkowwaniifii miillan keessan wal faallessee isinirraa cira. jirma muka timiraa irrattin isin fannisa, Isinis (yoos) eenyu keenya (anamoo Gooftaa Muusaatu) adabbiin isaa irra cimaafi turaa akka ta’e beekuuf jirtu.”
(Firauni) akasema: Oh! Mmemuamini kabla ya mimi kuwapa ruhusa? Hakika yeye ndiye mkubwa wenu aliyewafundisha uchawi huu. 20:71 — the verse above

The translators word this verse differently
They said, "We will not prefer you to the proofs that have come to us, and Him who created us. So issue whatever judgment you wish to issue. You can only rule in this lowly life.
They said: We choose thee not above the clear proofs that have come unto us, and above Him Who created us. So decree what thou wilt decree. Thou wilt end for us only this life of the world
Said they, 'We will never prefer thee to what has come to us of manifest signs, and to Him who originated us. Decide then what thou canst decide; thou canst only decide in the life of this world
They said, "We will not have more regard to thee than to the clear tokens which have come to us, or than to Him who hath made us: doom the doom thou wilt: Thou canst only doom as to this present life
They answered, we will by no means have greater regard unto thee, than unto those evident miracles which have been shewn us, or than unto him who hath created us. Pronounce therefore that sentence against us which thou art about to pronounce: For thou canst only give sentence as to this present life

We have believed in our Lord, so that He may forgive us our sins, and the magic you have compelled us to practice. God is Better, and more Lasting."
Lo! we believe in our Lord, that He may forgive us our sins and the magic unto which thou didst force us. Allah is better and more lasting
Verily, we believe in our Lord, that He may pardon us our sins, and the magic thou hast forced us to use; and God is better and more lasting
of a truth we have believed on our Lord that he may pardon us our sins and the sorcery to which thou hast forced us, for God is better, and more abiding than thou
Verily we believe on our Lord, that he may forgive us our sins, and the sorcery which thou hast forced us to exercise: For God is better to reward, and more able to prolong punishment than thou
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:102, 10:76, 10:77, 20:70, 20:71, in full, and nothing else. No , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over all four renderings in mushaf order, qualifying where every probe term was present in at least three of the four. Verses proposed for removal and confirmed out: 11:7 - Matched on sorcery. Its subject is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the trial of conduct; the word appears only in the closing accusation, and the verse is not about magic. Why each passage is in the study is stated per passage, and is signed with this prose.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
