Has the story of Moses reached you?
How does the Qur'an tell the story of Moses and Pharaoh?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 20:9–16 In as ONE PASSAGE because the call is one scene: Moses sees a fire and goes for a brand - HE WAS CALLED BY NAME: O MOSES - LO! I, EVEN I, AM THY LORD, so take off thy shoes, thou art in the holy valley of Tuwa - I have chosen thee - THERE IS NO GOD SAVE ME, SO SERVE ME AND ESTABLISH WORSHIP FOR MY REMEMBRANCE. 20:14 ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an give the words of the prayer, or only the command to pray? with a different reason.
- 02 20:42–48 In as ONE PASSAGE because the commission and the fear are one exchange: go, thou and thy brother, with My tokens - GO, BOTH OF YOU, UNTO PHARAOH, HE HATH TRANSGRESSED - AND SPEAK UNTO HIM A GENTLE WORD, THAT PERADVENTURE HE MAY HEED OR FEAR - they say, we fear he may play the tyrant - FEAR NOT, I AM WITH YOU TWAIN, HEARING AND SEEING.
- 03 20:56–64 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the challenge from both sides: We showed him all Our tokens, BUT HE DENIED AND REFUSED - hast thou come to drive us from our land by thy magic? - appoint a tryst - YOUR TRYST SHALL BE THE DAY OF THE FEAST, WHEN THE PEOPLE ASSEMBLE IN THE FORENOON - and Pharaoh's men debate in secret and decide to come in battle line.
- 04 20:65–73 In as ONE PASSAGE because the contest and its reversal are inseparable: either throw first, or let us - their cords and staves SEEMED TO HIM AS THOUGH THEY RAN - AND MOSES CONCEIVED A FEAR IN HIS MIND - fear not, thou art the higher - THEN THE WIZARDS WERE FLUNG DOWN PROSTRATE, CRYING: WE BELIEVE IN THE LORD OF AARON AND MOSES - Pharaoh threatens crucifixion - WE CHOOSE THEE NOT ABOVE THE CLEAR PROOFS THAT HAVE COME UNTO US.
- 05 20:77–79 In as ONE PASSAGE because the deliverance and the verdict are three lines: take away My slaves by night and STRIKE FOR THEM A DRY PATH IN THE SEA - Pharaoh followed with his hosts and there covered them that which did cover them - AND PHARAOH LED HIS FOLK ASTRAY, HE DID NOT GUIDE THEM.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah 20 tells this story from the fire to the sea in one sustained movement, and this study takes that arc rather than assembling a composite from the four surahs that tell it.
It begins with a man who wants a light. Moses sees a fire and tells his family to wait - he will bring a brand, or find guidance at it. What he finds is his name being called. 20:12: "I, even I, am thy Lord" (Pickthall) - take off your shoes, you are in the holy valley of Tuwa.
The commission at 20:43-44 contains the line that surprises most readers. GO, BOTH OF YOU, TO PHARAOH - HE HAS TRANSGRESSED - AND SPEAK TO HIM A GENTLE WORD, THAT PERHAPS HE MAY HEED OR FEAR. The tyrant is named as a tyrant in one breath and the manner of address is specified as gentle in the next. All four renderings carry it - a mild word, a soft speech.
And the two of them are afraid. 20:45: we fear that he may be beforehand with us, or that he may play the tyrant. The answer is not a rebuke: FEAR NOT, I AM WITH YOU BOTH, HEARING AND SEEING.
The confrontation turns on a public contest, and its centre is a detail the text does not have to include. When the magicians throw, their cords and staves SEEM TO MOVE - and 20:67 says MOSES CONCEIVED A FEAR IN HIS MIND. The prophet is frightened by the trick. He is reassured, throws, and the thing is over.
What follows is the real reversal. The magicians - Pharaoh's own men, brought to win - fall prostrate and declare belief. Pharaoh threatens them with the cutting off of hands and feet and crucifixion on palm trunks, and their answer at 20:72 is the high point of the arc: WE SHALL NOT PREFER YOU ABOVE THE CLEAR PROOFS THAT HAVE COME TO US - decree what you will; you can only decree for this present life.
Then the crossing, in three lines, told without spectacle. Strike for them a dry path in the sea. Pharaoh followed with his hosts, and THERE COVERED THEM THAT WHICH DID COVER THEM - the text declines to describe it. And the verdict, which is about leadership rather than drowning: AND PHARAOH LED HIS FOLK ASTRAY, HE DID NOT GUIDE THEM.
Three other surahs tell this story, one of them beginning much earlier with the infancy and the flight to Midian. They are named in the drops below rather than folded in, because a study that carried all four would stop being a telling and become a concordance.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 20:9–16, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

20:14 Wahrlich, Ich bin Allah.
20:9 Σου ήρθε (ω, Προφήτη) η ιστορία του Μωυσή;
20:12 12. Iš tiesų, Aš esu tavo Viešpats! Taigi nusiauk savo apavą – tu esi šventame slėnyje, Tuva.
20:13 13. Ir Aš pasirinkau tave. Taigi klausyk to, kas (tau) bus apreikšta.
20:14 14. Iš tiesų, Aš esu Allahas! La ilaha illa Ana (niekas neturi teisės būti garbinamas, išskyrus Mane), taigi garbink Mane ir atlik As-Salat (Ikamat-as-Salat) Mano Prisiminimui.

20:9 Na je, imekufikia hadithi ya Musa?
20:10 Alipouona moto, kwa hivyo akawaambia ahali zake: Ngojeni! Hakika mimi nimeuona moto, huenda nikawaletea kijinga kutoka humo, au nikapata uongofu kwenye moto huo.
20:11 Basi alipoufikia, akaitwa: Ewe Musa!
20:12 Hakika Mimi ndiye Mola wako Mlezi! Basi vua viatu vyako. Kwani uko katika bonde takatifu la 'Tuwa.
20:13 Nami nimekuteua wewe; basi sikiliza yanayofunuliwa.
20:14 Hakika Mimi ndiye Mwenyezi Mungu. Hakuna mungu isipokuwa Mimi tu.

20:57 (Ο Φαραώ) Είπε: «Ήρθες σε μας για να μας διώξεις από τη γη μας, με τη μαγεία σου, ω, Μωυσή;

20:63 „Мојсије и Арон су чаробњаци“, рекоше једни другима, „хоће да вас својим враџбинама истерају из ваше земље и да униште вашу најчаснију веру;
20:56 Na hakika tulimwonyesha ishara zetu zote. Lakini alikadhibisha na akakataa.
20:57 Akasema: Ewe Musa!
20:61 Musa akawaambia: Ole wenu!
Allah’a karşı yalan uydurmayın. Sonra bir azapla sizi helâk eder. Allah’a karşı yalan uyduran mutlaka hüsrana uğramıştır." dedi.

20:65 Wakasema: Ewe Musa!
20:66 Akasema: Bali tupeni nyinyi! Tahamaki!
20:70 Basi wachawi hao wakaangushwa chini wakasujudu. Wakasema: Tumemuamini Mola Mlezi wa Harun na Musa!
20:71 (Firauni) akasema: Oh! Mmemuamini kabla ya mimi kuwapa ruhusa? Hakika yeye ndiye mkubwa wenu aliyewafundisha uchawi huu.
20:68 "Korkma! Şüphesiz sen daha üstünsün." dedik.
20:69 "Sağ elindekini (âsânı) at!"

So settle your plan, and come as one front. Today, whoever gains the upper hand will succeed."
So arrange your plan, and come in battle line. Whoso is uppermost this day will be indeed successful
Collect therefore your tricks, and then form a row; for he is prosperous today who has the upper hand
So muster your craft: then come in order: well this day shall it be for him, who shall gain the upper hand
Wherefore collect all your cunning, and then come in order: For he shall prosper this day, who shall be superior

Lo! whoso cometh guilty unto his Lord, verily for him is hell. There he will neither die nor live

As for him who shall come before his Lord laden with crime - for him verily is Hell: he shall not die in it and he shall not live

But whoever comes to Him a believer, having worked righteousness-these will have the highest ranks.
But whoso cometh unto Him a believer, having done good works, for such are the high stations
But he who comes to Him a believer who has done aright - these, for them are the highest ranks
But he who shall come before Him, a believer, with righteous works, - these! the loftiest grades await them

And we inspired Moses, 'Journey by night with my servants, and strike out for them a dry road in the sea. Fear not pursuit, nor be afraid
Then revealed we to Moses, "Go forth by night with my servants and cleave for them a dry path in the sea; Fear not thou to be overtaken, neither be thou afraid
And we spake by revelation unto Moses, saying, go forth with my servants out of Egypt by night; and smite the waters with thy rod, and make them a dry path through the sea: Be not apprehensive of Pharaoh's overtaking thee; neither be thou afraid

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 20:9-16, 20:42-48, 20:56-64, 20:65-73, 20:77-79, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 26:10 - 26:10-68 not carried: surah 26's telling is a full parallel account and carrying it alongside surah 20's would be exactly the corpus-dump the Editor's frame forbids; 28:3 - 28:3-42 not carried: surah 28 supplies the infancy, the killing of the Egyptian and the flight to Midian - a different span of the life, not the call-to-drowning arc this study selects; 7:103 - 7:103-137 not carried: a third parallel telling of the same confrontation.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
