Those who swallow usury will not rise, except as someone driven mad by Satan's touch. That is because they say, "Commerce is like usury." But God has permitted commerce, and has forbidden usury. Whoever, on receiving advice from his Lord, refrains, may keep his past earnings, and his case rests with God. But whoever resumes-these are the dwellers of the Fire, wherein they will abide forever.
Does the Qur'an forbid interest on mortgages?
In short
- The text says: God has permitted commerce and forbidden usury (2:275); those who believe are to forgo what remains of usury, and if they repent they keep their capital, neither wronging nor wronged (2:278-279); and they are not to feed on usury compounded over and over (3:130).
- The text does not say: anything about a mortgage, nor what counts as usury in such a loan.
- The rest comes from: a report outside the Qur'an, set out in full below: taking interest (Muslim 1598).
Hadith references link to sunnah.com. Any grading shown there is that site's, not AALAMIN's.
Where the renderings split
3:130, Itani: "compounded over and over"
3:130, Pickthall: "doubling and quadrupling (the sum lent)"
3:130, Palmer: "usury doubly doubled"
3:130, Rodwell: "doubling it again and again"
3:130, Sale: "doubling it twofold"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text forbids usury and permits trade, and sets the two side by side: at 2:275 Itani has "God has permitted commerce, and has forbidden usury".
At 2:278-279 those who believe are told to give up what remains of it; Pickthall has "if ye repent, then ye have your principal (without interest)" at 2:279.
At 3:130 the renderings split on how the usury is described: Pickthall has "doubling and quadrupling (the sum lent)", Itani "compounded over and over" and Sale "doubling it twofold".
No verse names a mortgage or a home loan, and none says whether a particular kind of loan is usury. Outside the Qur'an, a report that the Prophet cursed the one who accepts interest and the one who pays it, the one who records it and the two witnesses, and said they are all equal, is in Sahih Muslim, Book 22: The Book of Musaqah (Muslim 1598).
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:275, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury) - Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein
Those who devour usury shall not rise again, save as he riseth whom Satan hath paralysed with a touch; and that is because they say 'selling is only like usury,' but God has made selling lawful and usury unlawful; and he to whom the admonition from his Lord has come, if he desists, what has gone before is his: his matter is in God's hands. But whosoever returns (to usury) these are the fellows of the Fire, and they shall dwell therein for aye
They who swallow down usury, shall arise in the resurrection only as he ariseth whom Satan hath infected by his touch. This, for that they say, "Selling is only the like of usury:" and yet God hath allowed selling, and forbidden usury. He then who when this warning shall come to him from his Lord, abstaineth, shall have pardon for the past, and his lot shall be with God. But they who return to usury, shall be given over to the fire; therein shall they abide for ever
They who devour usury shall not arise from the dead, but as he ariseth whom Satan hath infected by a touch: This shall happen to them because they say. Truly selling is but as usury: And yet God hath permitted selling and forbidden usury. He therefore who when there cometh unto him an admonition from his Lord, abstaineth from usury for the future, shall have what is past forgiven him, and his affair belongeth unto God. But whoever returneth to usury, they shall be the companions of hell fire, they shall continue therein for ever

(Allah, onu affeder.) Kim tekrar (faize) dönerse, işte onlar cehennemliklerdir. Orada ebedî kalacaklardır.

It is for the poor; those who are restrained in the way of God, and unable to travel in the land. The unaware would think them rich, due to their dignity. You will recognize them by their features. They do not ask from people insistently. Whatever charity you give, God is aware of it.
(Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it

There are among you the poor, who being shut up to fighting for the cause of God, have it not in their power to strike out into the earth for riches. Those who know them not, think them rich because of their modesty. By this their token thou shalt know them - they ask not of men with importunity: and of whatever good thing ye shall give them in alms, of a truth God will take knowledge

2:278 Enyi mlioamini!
2:278 Ey iman edenler! Eğer gerçekten Mümin iseniz, Allah’tan korkun ve faizden geri kalanı bırakın.
2:279 Eğer böyle yapmazsanız, bunun Allah’a ve elçisine karşı açılmış bir savaş olduğunu bilin. Şayet tevbe ederseniz, ana paranız sizindir. (Böylece) zulmetmemiş ve de zulme uğramamış olursunuz.

To God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth: He spareth whom he pleaseth, and he punisheth whom he pleaseth; for God is merciful
