Those who swallow usury will not rise, except as someone driven mad by Satan's touch. That is because they say, "Commerce is like usury." But God has permitted commerce, and has forbidden usury. Whoever, on receiving advice from his Lord, refrains, may keep his past earnings, and his case rests with God. But whoever resumes-these are the dwellers of the Fire, wherein they will abide forever.
Does the Qur'an forbid interest (riba)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:275 The longest statement in the set: those who devour usury, the comparison they make between trade and usury, and the answer that God has permitted trade and forbidden usury. In because the objection and the reply stand in the same verse.
- 02 2:276 God blights usury and makes almsgiving fruitful. The most divergent verse in THIS STUDY'S SET at 0.84 on the five-based measure - 56th of the 6,236 verses scored, not the highest in the corpus as the version signed when four translations were cleared stated. The five renderings say this in strikingly different words, Itani alone stating it as a judgement rather than an act - God condemns usury, and He blesses charities - and the study does not choose between them.
- 03 2:278 Addressed to believers: give up what remains due from usury, if ye are believers. In because it is the set's one direct instruction to stop.
- 04 3:130 Devour not usury, doubling it - Pickthall has doubling and quadrupling, Itani has compounded over and over. In because the five differ on whether the prohibition is qualified by the doubling or merely described by it.
- 05 4:161 Names taking usury among the things for which an earlier community was reproached, alongside devouring people's wealth by false pretences. In because it places the prohibition before this community.
- 06 30:39 Sets usury and alms directly against each other: what is put out to increase on (other) people's property has no increase with God, while what is given seeking God's face is doubled. In because it is the set's only statement of the contrast as a whole.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
These six treat usury and almsgiving as opposites, and they say so most plainly where they are set side by side.
30:39 puts them in one sentence: what is put out at usury to increase on (other) people's property has no increase with God, while what is given seeking God's face is doubled. 2:276 states the same contrast as an act - usury blighted, almsgiving made fruitful. Itani states it as a judgement instead: God condemns usury, and He blesses charities. That is a fifth rendering of the verse and it is not offered here as the reading of it.
2:275 is the longest, and it contains the objection as well as the answer: those who say trade is just like usury, and the reply that God has permitted trade and forbidden usury. 2:278 is the one direct instruction: give up what remains due from usury, if you are believers. 3:130 forbids devouring it doubled - Pickthall has doubling and quadrupling, Itani has compounded over and over - and the five do not agree on whether the doubling qualifies the prohibition or merely describes the practice. 4:161 names it among the things an earlier community was reproached for.
What none of these verses does is define the term. Where the line falls between trade, which is permitted in the same breath, and usury, which is forbidden, is not drawn inside them - and 2:276 is the most divergent verse in this study's set at 0.84, which is a fair warning about how much the English is carrying here. It is not the most divergent verse in the corpus. The version of this study signed on 2026-09-05 said that it was, and that was wrong when it was written rather than made wrong by a fifth translator: on the four-rendering measure it was signed over, 2:276 stood 71st of 6,227 scored verses, and on the five-rendering measure it stands 56th. Drawing that line is the interpretation layer, and it is blocked on rights.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:275, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury) - Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein
Those who devour usury shall not rise again, save as he riseth whom Satan hath paralysed with a touch; and that is because they say 'selling is only like usury,' but God has made selling lawful and usury unlawful; and he to whom the admonition from his Lord has come, if he desists, what has gone before is his: his matter is in God's hands. But whosoever returns (to usury) these are the fellows of the Fire, and they shall dwell therein for aye
They who swallow down usury, shall arise in the resurrection only as he ariseth whom Satan hath infected by his touch. This, for that they say, "Selling is only the like of usury:" and yet God hath allowed selling, and forbidden usury. He then who when this warning shall come to him from his Lord, abstaineth, shall have pardon for the past, and his lot shall be with God. But they who return to usury, shall be given over to the fire; therein shall they abide for ever
They who devour usury shall not arise from the dead, but as he ariseth whom Satan hath infected by a touch: This shall happen to them because they say. Truly selling is but as usury: And yet God hath permitted selling and forbidden usury. He therefore who when there cometh unto him an admonition from his Lord, abstaineth from usury for the future, shall have what is past forgiven him, and his affair belongeth unto God. But whoever returneth to usury, they shall be the companions of hell fire, they shall continue therein for ever

It is for the poor; those who are restrained in the way of God, and unable to travel in the land. The unaware would think them rich, due to their dignity. You will recognize them by their features. They do not ask from people insistently. Whatever charity you give, God is aware of it.
(Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. There are among you the poor, who being shut up to fighting for the cause of God, have it not in their power to strike out into the earth for riches. Those who know them not, think them rich because of their modesty. By this their token thou shalt know them - they ask not of men with importunity: and of whatever good thing ye shall give them in alms, of a truth God will take knowledge

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Do they not see that God expands the provision for whomever He wills, or restricts it? Surely in this are signs for people who believe.
See they not that Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will, and straiteneth (it for whom He will). Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who believe
Have they not seen that God extends provision to whom He pleases, or doles it out? verily, in that are signs unto a people who believe
See they not that God bestoweth full supplies on whom He pleaseth and giveth sparingly to whom He pleaseth? Signs truly are there herein to those who believe
Do they not see that God bestoweth provision abundantly on whom He pleaseth, and is sparing unto whom He pleaseth? Verily herein are signs unto people who believe

So give the relative his rights, and the destitute, and the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek God's presence. Those are the prosperous.
So give to the kinsman his due, and to the needy, and to the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek Allah's Countenance. And such are they who are successful
Then give to the kinsman his due, and to the poor and to the wayfarer; that is better for those who desire the face of God, and these it is who are prosperous
To him who is of kin to thee give his due, and to the poor and to the wayfarer: this will be best for those who seek the face of God; and with them it shall be well
Give unto Him who is of kin to thee his reasonable due; and also to the poor, and the stranger: This is better for those who seek the face of God; and they shall prosper

God is He who created you, then provides for you, then makes you die, then brings you back to life. Can any of your idols do any of that? Glorified is He, and Exalted above what they associate.

It is God who created you and then provided for you; and then will make you die, and then will quicken you again; is there any of your partners who can do aught of that? Celebrated be His praises, and exalted be He above what they associate with Him
It is God who created you - then fed you - then will cause you to die - then will make you alive. Is there any of your companion-gods who can do aught of these things? Praise be to Him! and far be He exalted above the gods they join with Him
It is God who hath created you, and hath provided food for you: Hereafter will He cause you to die; and after that will He raise you again to life. Is there any of your false gods, who is able to do the least of these things? Praise be unto Him; and far be He removed from what they associate with Him

Corruption has appeared on land and sea, because of what people's hands have earned, in order to make them taste some of what they have done, so that they might return.
Corruption doth appear on land and sea because of (the evil) which men's hands have done, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return
Trouble hath appeared in the land and the sea, for what men's hands have gained! to make them taste a part of that which they have done,- haply they may return
Destruction hath appeared by land and by sea on account of what men's hands have wrought, that it might make them taste somewhat of the fruit of their doings, that haply they might turn to God
Corruption hath appeared by land and by sea, for the crimes which men's hands have committed; that it might make them to taste a part of the fruits of that which they have wrought, that peradventure they might turn from their evil ways
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 2:275, 2:276, 2:278, 3:130, 4:161, 30:39, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles the term. What changed: at 3:130 Itani writes compounded over and over where the other four write a form of doubling, which is a fifth reading of the clause the study says they disagree about; at 2:276 he states the contrast as a judgement - God condemns usury, and He blesses charities - where the other four state it as an act done to the two. AND A CLAIM THIS STUDY PUBLISHED IS WITHDRAWN AS FALSE. It called 2:276 the most divergent verse in the entire corpus at 0.83. Measured on 2026-09-08 on the five-rendering measure, across all 6,236 verses it covers, 2:276 stands 56th; recomputed on the four-rendering measure this study was signed over, by dropping the Itani pairs from the stored pair distances, it stood 71st of the 6,227 verses that measure covers, with seventy verses above it. THE CLAIM WAS ALREADY UNTRUE ON THE DAY IT WAS SIGNED, and Itani did not cause it. It is corrected in the synthesis and in the reason at 2:276 to the claim the figures do support: 2:276 is the most divergent verse in this study's set. The divergence figures below are restated on the five-based measure. What did not change: the verse set, the reasons per verse other than the two noted below, and the finding that these verses do not define the term.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over all four renderings in mushaf order, qualifying where every probe term was present in at least three of the four. THE TERMS OF THAT SEARCH WERE NOT RECORDED IN THE SIGNED STUDY and cannot be recovered, so neither the search nor its three-of-four qualifying rule has been re-run; what follows is a fresh probe, recorded in full, whose results were read but from which nothing was taken. The re-check over five translations added and removed no verse. Why each passage is in the study is stated per passage, and is signed with this prose.
PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["usury"] - 8 verses in the whole corpus, reaching all six anchors, in all five renderings at every one of them; ["riba"] - 0 verses; ["interest"] - 3, reaching no anchor; ["doubling"] - 1, reaching one anchor; ["compounded"] - 1, reaching one; ["usury","alms"] - 3, reaching two. Union 11 verses, of which 5 are not anchors of this study. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it: the set was confirmed by the Editor, not by the union. Four results are recorded because they bear on the finding. "riba", the word in this study's own question, RETURNS NOTHING: it appears in no cleared rendering, and every English word here is a translator's choice for it. "interest" returns three verses and reaches none of the six; the only one of the three about usury at all is 2:279, where Pickthall alone writes principal (without interest) - and 2:279 continues the passage this study carries at 2:275-2:278 without being in it. "usury" returns only eight verses in the whole corpus, six of which are this study's anchors; the other two are Sale alone, at 2:245 and 5:12, where he renders a loan to God that the verse praises as lend unto God on good usury - the same English word this study is about, carrying the opposite valence, in one translator. "doubling" returns a single verse, 3:130, in Sale, Rodwell and Pickthall; "compounded" returns a single verse, the same one, in Itani alone. 2:279 is recorded for the Editor rather than acted on: whether it belongs in this study is an editorial act and was not taken in a re-check over five translations.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 3 at 3:130 (0.62), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 2:276 (0.84), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared named the same two verses at 0.58 and 0.83, and both bands are unchanged. 2:276 is the most divergent verse in this set and is in the most divergent band of five; it is not the most divergent verse in the corpus, and the sentence that said so has been withdrawn above. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
