عَالَمِين AALAMIN Read the Qur'an in context

Does the Qur'an forbid intimacy during a period?

In short

  • The text says: during menstruation the men are to keep away from women and not approach them, or in Pickthall go not in unto them, until they are clean, and then come to them as God has directed (2:222); and the next verse calls the women a tilth, field or tillage (2:223).
  • The text does not say: what keeping away covers beyond approaching or going in unto them; the five do not define it.
  • The rest comes from: a report that, after 2:222 came down, those who asked were told to do everything except intercourse is in Sahih Muslim, Book 3: The Book of Menstruation (Muslim 302).

Hadith references link to sunnah.com. Any grading shown there is that site's, not AALAMIN's.

Where the renderings split

2:222, Itani: "do not approach them until they have become pure"

2:222, Pickthall: "go not in unto them till they are cleansed"

2:222, Palmer: "go not near them till they be cleansed"

2:222, Rodwell: "approach them not, until they be cleansed"

2:222, Sale: "go not near them, until they be cleansed"

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:222 The verse that answers the question: the men keep away, and do not approach or go in unto the women, until they are clean
  2. 02 2:223 The next verse, on coming to the women afterwards, read with 2:222
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Yes: 2:222 tells the men not to approach the women during the period, and the five agree on it. They differ on the words. Pickthall has "go not in unto them till they are cleansed" at 2:222, the plainest of the five; Itani has "do not approach them until they have become pure".

The verse sets an end as well as a limit. At 2:222 Itani has "Once they have become pure, approach them in the way God has directed you".

What the verse does not do is define keeping away. Whether it means intercourse only, or more, the five do not say. A report outside the Qur'an, named above with a link, says those who asked were told to do everything except intercourse.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:222, widening across 2 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation

2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And they ask you about menstruation: say, "It is harmful, so keep away from women during menstruation. And do not approach them until they have become pure. Once they have become pure, approach them in the way God has directed you." God loves the repentant, and He loves those who keep clean."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you. Truly Allah loveth those who turn unto Him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanness

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

They will ask thee about menstruation: say, 'It is a hurt.' So keep apart from women in their menstruation, and go not near them till they be cleansed; but when they are cleansed come in to them by where God has ordered you verily, God loves those who turn to Him, and those who keep themselves clean

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

They will also question thee as to the courses of women. SAY: They are a pollution. Separate yourselves therefore from women and approach them not, until they be cleansed. But when they are cleansed, go in unto them as God hath ordained for you. Verily God loveth those who turn to Him, and loveth those who seek to be clean

George Sale published 1734

They will ask thee also, concerning the courses of women: Answer, they are a pollution: Therefore separate your selves from women in their courses, and go not near them, until they be cleansed. But when they are cleansed, go in unto them as God hath commanded you, for God loveth those who repent, and loveth those who are clean

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. And wed not to idolatrous men until they believe, for a believing slave is better than an idolater, even though he please you. George Sale1734 Marry not women who are idolaters, until they believe: Verily a maid servant who believeth, is better than an idolatress, although she please you more. And give not women who believe, in marriage to the idolaters, until they believe; for verily a servant, who is a true believer, is better than an idolater, though he please you more. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

The question asks whether the Qur'an forbids intimacy during a period. The answer is at 2:222. 2:223, which follows it, is carried because the two are read together. The study Does 2:223 ('your wives are a tilth') degrade women? reads both for a different question, whether 2:223 degrades women.

This study names one report outside the Qur'an and does not grade it.
