And they ask you about menstruation: say, "It is harmful, so keep away from women during menstruation. And do not approach them until they have become pure. Once they have become pure, approach them in the way God has directed you." God loves the repentant, and He loves those who keep clean."
Does the Qur'an say a woman can't cook or touch food during her period?
In short
- The text says: during menstruation the men are to keep away from women and not approach them until they are clean (2:222).
- The text does not say: anything about cooking, food or a woman's touch during her period.
- The rest comes from: a report that, after 2:222 came down, those who asked were told to do everything except intercourse, when some would not eat with a woman in her period, is in Sahih Muslim, Book 3: The Book of Menstruation (Muslim 302); and a report that the Prophet drank from the vessel, and ate from the bone, where Aisha's mouth had been while she was menstruating is in Sahih Muslim, Book 3: The Book of Menstruation (Muslim 300).

Where the renderings split
2:222, Itani: "keep away from women during menstruation"
2:222, Pickthall: "let women alone at such times"
2:222, Palmer: "keep apart from women in their menstruation"
2:222, Rodwell: "Separate yourselves therefore from women"
2:222, Sale: "separate your selves from women in their courses"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:222 The verse on keeping away during the period, the one verse a ban on food would have to rest on; it names no food
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text has one instruction for the time of the period, at 2:222, and it is given to the men: Itani has "keep away from women during menstruation". It names no food, no kitchen and no touch.
So the text does not forbid a woman to cook or to handle food during her period. Two reports outside the Qur'an, named above with links, describe eating and drinking from the same vessel, and an answer that allowed everything except intercourse.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:222.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you. Truly Allah loveth those who turn unto Him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanness
They will ask thee about menstruation: say, 'It is a hurt.' So keep apart from women in their menstruation, and go not near them till they be cleansed; but when they are cleansed come in to them by where God has ordered you verily, God loves those who turn to Him, and those who keep themselves clean
They will also question thee as to the courses of women. SAY: They are a pollution. Separate yourselves therefore from women and approach them not, until they be cleansed. But when they are cleansed, go in unto them as God hath ordained for you. Verily God loveth those who turn to Him, and loveth those who seek to be clean
They will ask thee also, concerning the courses of women: Answer, they are a pollution: Therefore separate your selves from women in their courses, and go not near them, until they be cleansed. But when they are cleansed, go in unto them as God hath commanded you, for God loveth those who repent, and loveth those who are clean

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an forbids a woman to cook or touch food during her period. The probe 'menstruat\w*|courses|menses' finds the period at 2:222, 2:228 and 65:4 only, and those of the three outside this study's set are recorded as not carried; none speaks of food.
This study names two reports outside the Qur'an and does not grade them.
