And there is a lesson for you in cattle: We give you a drink from their bellies, from between waste and blood, pure milk, refreshing to the drinkers.
What does the Qur'an say about livestock and their benefits to us?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 16:66 In the cattle there is a lesson for you: We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, FROM BETWIXT THE REFUSE AND THE BLOOD, pure milk palatable to the drinkers. In because it is the most detailed physiological statement in the set, and because it calls the animal a lesson before describing it.
- 02 16:5 And the cattle hath He created, whence ye have warm clothing and uses, and whereof ye eat. In because it is the opening of the benefits passage and names the three uses in order. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about kindness to animals?, with a different reason there.
- 03 6:142 And of the cattle some for burdens and some for food; eat of that which God hath bestowed upon you, and follow not the footsteps of the devil. In because it divides livestock by function and attaches a warning about inventing rules over them.
- 04 40:79 God it is Who hath appointed for you cattle, that ye may ride on some of them and eat of some. In because it states the same division in the shortest form, as a divine appointment.
- 05 43:12 He Who created all the pairs, and appointed for you ships and cattle whereupon ye ride. In because it puts the animal and the ship in one category - things provided to travel on - which is the text's own grouping, not a modern one.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and 16:66 is the one that repays attention.
It begins by calling the animal a LESSON - and then gives an anatomical description. We give you to drink of what is in their bellies, from between the refuse and the blood, pure milk, palatable to the drinkers. The verse locates milk between two things a reader would not want to drink, and the point being made is about purity coming out of an unpromising place.
The rest of the set is a division of labour, stated four times in slightly different forms: some for carrying, some for eating, some for riding. 6:142 and 40:79 both put it as a divine appointment rather than as a fact about animals.
43:12 makes a grouping a modern reader would not: SHIPS AND CATTLE, in one clause, as the things appointed for you to ride. The text classifies by function.
6:142 adds the one warning in the set, and it is not about cruelty. It is about invention - eat what God has given you and DO NOT FOLLOW THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE DEVIL - which in its surah context is a rebuke to people who had declared certain animals forbidden or reserved on their own authority. 6:136, carried in What does the Qur'an say about kindness to animals?, is the same argument.
Three verses were dropped: two about sacrificial animals at the pilgrimage, which is a rite rather than a benefit, and one about the rivers of milk in the Garden, which is not about livestock at all.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 16:66, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Verily, ye have in cattle a lesson; we give you to drink from that which is in their bellies, betwixt chyme and blood,- pure milk,- easy to swallow for those who drink
Ye have also teaching from the cattle. We give you drink of the pure milk, between dregs and blood, which is in their bellies; the pleasant beverage of them that quaff it
Ye have also in cattle an example of instruction: We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, a liquor between digested dregs, and blood; namely pure milk, which is swallowed with pleasure by those who drink it

So be patient. The promise of God is true. Whether We show you some of what We have promised them, or take you to Us, to Us they will be returned.
Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And whether we let thee see a part of that which We promise them, or (whether) We cause thee to die, still unto Us they will be brought back

We sent messengers before you. Some of them We told you about, and some We did not tell you about. No messenger can bring a miracle except by leave of God. Then, when the command of God is issued, fair judgment will be passed, and there and then the seekers of vanity will lose.
Verily We sent messengers before thee, among them those of whom We have told thee, and some of whom We have not told thee; and it was not given to any messenger that he should bring a portent save by Allah's leave, but when Allah's commandment cometh (the cause) is judged aright, and the followers of vanity will then be lost
And we did send apostles before thee: of them are some whose stories we have related to thee, and of them are some whose stories we have not related to thee; and no apostle might ever bring a sign except by the permission of God; but when God's bidding came it was decided with truth, and there were those lost who deemed it vain
And we have already sent apostles before thee: of some we have told thee, and of others we have told thee nothing: but no apostle had the power to work a miracle unless by the leave of God. But when God's behest cometh, everything will be decided with truth: and then they perish who treated it as a vain thing
We have sent a great number of apostles before thee; the histories of some of whom We have related unto thee, and the histories of others of them We have not related unto thee: But no apostle had the power to produce a sign, unless by the permission of God. When the command of God, therefore, shall come, judgment shall be given with truth; and then shall they perish who endeavour to render the signs of God of no effect

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 16:66, 16:5, 6:142, 40:79, 43:12, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - cattle + warmth; cattle + created + warmth; milk; ride + cattle; cattle + carry + burdens; cattle + benefits; cattle + profit. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 22:28; 22:33; 47:15. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
