If you fear you cannot act fairly towards the orphans-then marry the women you like-two, or three, or four. But if you fear you will not be fair, then one, or what you already have. That makes it more likely that you avoid bias.
What does the Qur'an condition marrying more than once on?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:3 The permission and both of its conditions, in one sentence: the fear about orphans that opens it and the fear about equity that closes it
- 02 4:129 The verse that speaks to the condition 4:3 sets, and says the equal dealing will not be attainable
- 03 4:127 The verse immediately before 4:129, where the text returns to orphan women and the question of marrying them - the thread that ties 4:129's equity statement back to 4:3's subject, so the pairing of the two verses is the text's own. The four split on the guardians' stance: Pickthall has them desiring the marriage where Palmer, Rodwell and Sale have them averse to it - a content split, named, not resolved.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an permits marrying more than one woman in a single verse, and that verse both opens and closes with a condition. 4:3 opens with a fear about orphans - if you fear you will not deal fairly with them - and out of that fear comes the permission: two, three or four, or in Palmer's words "by twos, or threes, or fours". The same sentence closes by narrowing again: if you fear you cannot be equitable, then one only, or those your right hands possess - "the slaves whom ye have acquired", as Rodwell puts it.
What most readers never meet is what the same surah says a little later. At 4:129 all four renderings say you will not be able to deal equally between wives, however much you wish to - and then tell the reader not to turn away from one altogether and leave her, in Palmer's and Rodwell's words, "as it were in suspense".
Nothing else in the text answers to the same words: a search for marrying two, three or four returns 4:3 and no other verse. Sale goes further than the other three at 4:3, twice - he alone narrows the orphans to "of the female sex", and he alone adds "and not more" after the numbers.
Whether 4:129 restricts the permission at 4:3, qualifies it, or comments on it without limiting it, is a step beyond these two verses, taken by scholars, and this study does not take it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
WHAT THIS STUDY DOES NOT ANSWER, and the layer that would. (1) Whether 4:129 restricts, qualifies or merely comments on 4:3: that is the whole juristic argument, it is centuries old, and no juristic source has cleared the rights audit. (2) What conditions any school attaches in practice: the same layer. (3) The institution referred to as what the right hands possess: naming it is unavoidable because the verse names it, but explaining it needs historical and juristic material this platform holds none of. (4) Anything a reader should do.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:3, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice
But if ye fear that ye cannot do justice between orphans, then marry what seems good to you of women, by twos, or threes, or fours; and if ye fear that ye cannot be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands possess. That keeps you nearer to not being partial
And if ye are apprehensive that ye shall not deal fairly with orphans, then, of other women who seem good in your eyes, marry but two, or three, or four; and if ye still fear that ye shall not act equitably, then one only; or the slaves whom ye have acquired: this will make justice on your part easier
And if ye fear that ye shall not act with equity towards orphans of the female sex, take in marriage of such other women as please you, two, or three, or four, and not more. But if ye fear that ye cannot act equitably towards so many, marry one only, or the slaves which ye shall have acquired. This will be easier, that ye swerve not from righteousness

Ye will not be able to deal equally between (your) wives, however much ye wish (to do so). But turn not altogether away (from one), leaving her as in suspense. If ye do good and keep from evil, lo! Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful
Ye are not able, it may be, to act equitably to your wives, even though ye covet it; do not however be quite partial, and leave one as it were in suspense; but if ye be reconciled and fear, then God is forgiving and merciful
And ye will not have it at all in your power to treat your wives alike, even though you fain would do so; but yield not wholly to disinclination, so that ye leave one of them as it were in suspense; if ye come to an understanding, and fear God, then, verily, God is Forgiving, Merciful

They ask you for a ruling about women. The translators word this verse differently
If a woman fears maltreatment or desertion from her husband, there is no fault in them if they reconcile their differences, for reconciliation is best. Souls are prone to avarice; yet if you do what is good, and practice piety-God is Cognizant of what you do.
If a woman feareth ill treatment from her husband, or desertion, it is no sin for them twain if they make terms of peace between themselves. Peace is better. But greed hath been made present in the minds (of men). If ye do good and keep from evil, lo! Allah is ever Informed of what ye do
And if a woman fears from her husband perverseness or aversion, it is no crime in them both that they should be reconciled to each other, for reconciliation is best. For souls are prone to avarice; but if ye act kindly and fear God, of what ye do He is aware
And if a wife fear ill usage or aversion on the part of her husband, then shall it be no fault in them if they can agree with mutual agreement, for agreement is best. Men's souls are prone to avarice; but if ye act kindly and fear God, then, verily, your actions are not unnoticed by God
If a woman fear ill usage, or aversion from her husband, it shall be no crime in them if they agree the matter amicably between themselves; for a reconciliation is better than a separation. Mens souls are naturally inclined to covetousness: But if ye be kind towards women, and fear to wrong them, God is well acquainted with what ye do

To God belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. We have instructed those who were given the Book before you, and you, to be conscious of God. But if you refuse-to God belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. God is in no need, Praiseworthy.
Unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. And We charged those who received the Scripture before you, and (We charge) you, that ye keep your duty toward Allah. And if ye disbelieve, lo! unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, and Allah is ever Absolute, Owner of Praise
God's is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth! We have ordained to those who have been given the Book before you, and to you too that ye fear God;- but if ye misbelieve, verily, God's is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and God is rich and to be praised
And whatever is in the Heavens and in the Earth is God's! We have already enjoined those to whom the Scriptures were given before you, and yourselves, to fear God. But if ye become unbelievers, yet know that whatever is in the Heavens and in the Earth is God's: and God is Rich, Praiseworthy
and unto God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

You will not be able to treat women with equal fairness, no matter how much you desire it. But do not be so biased as to leave another suspended. If you make amends, and act righteously-God is Forgiving and Merciful.
Ye can by no means carry your selves equally between women in all respects, although ye study to do it; Therefore turn not from a wife with all manner of aversion, nor leave her like one in suspense: If ye agree, and fear to abuse your wives, God is gracious and merciful
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
SEED. 'marry orphans two three four' returned exactly one verse across all four renderings: 4:3. 'deal justly wives' returned none, because the four use different words for the dealing - equitable, fairly, justice, equally - which is recorded rather than worked around, and is why 4:129 was reached by reading the passage rather than by the seed.
WHERE THE RENDERINGS PART COMPANY, NAMED. At 4:3 the opening condition is 'ye cannot do justice between orphans' (Palmer), 'ye will not deal fairly by the orphans' (Pickthall), 'ye shall not deal fairly with orphans' (Rodwell) and 'ye shall not act with equity towards orphans OF THE FEMALE SEX' (Sale) - Sale alone narrows the orphans. Sale alone also adds 'and not more' after the numbers. The closing alternative is 'what your right hands possess' (Palmer), '(the captives) that your right hands possess' (Pickthall), 'the slaves whom ye have acquired' (Rodwell) and 'the slaves which ye shall have acquired' (Sale): the four differ in how plainly they name it, and this study names that they differ without explaining the institution, which would need layers it does not have.
CONTESTED GROUND, and the rule applied. Written under the standing 109 principle and its 111 symmetry: nothing is added that the four do not carry, and nothing all four carry is described below itself. The permission is stated because all four state it; the two conditions are stated because all four state them; 4:129's statement is stated in its own words rather than being turned into a conclusion about the permission.
A further divergence, named with its authorities: at 4:127 the four split on the guardians' stance toward marrying the orphan women. Pickthall has "though ye desire to marry them"; Palmer has "whom ye are averse from marrying", Rodwell "whom ye refuse to marry" and Sale "neither will ye marry them". All four return to female orphans and their withheld due, so the subject is unanimous; the direction is not, and the study names the split rather than choosing.
Quotation is a claim of exactness, and the numbers at 4:3 are grouped accordingly: Pickthall prints "two or three or four" without commas, Rodwell and Sale "two, or three, or four" with them, and Palmer "by twos, or threes, or fours". The prose states the common words unquoted and quotes only Palmer, by name.
The suspense clause at 4:129 was verified in all four before it was stated: "as it were in suspense" in Palmer and Rodwell, "in suspense" in Pickthall and Sale.
