Among the people is he who trades in distracting tales; intending, without knowledge, to lead away from God's way, and to make a mockery of it. These will have a humiliating punishment.
Does the Qur'an forbid music?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 31:6 The verse the question is usually put to, and the one where the five renderings give five different wordings for what he buys
- 02 17:64 Cited for the word voice; in all five the voice belongs to the one being addressed in that passage, and no instrument appears
- 03 53:59–61 The nearest the text comes to condemning diversion: wondering, laughing, not weeping, amusing yourselves
- 04 19:62 Returned by the seed and included so the reader sees what the search found: it describes speech in the garden, not the subject
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The word music does not appear in the Qur'an as these five render it - not once in 31,173 rows.
What does appear is singing, and it appears as praise. At 34:10 Rodwell has the mountains and birds "answer his songs of praise" and Sale has them "sing alternate praises", where Palmer, Pickthall and Itani have them echo it; at 37:1 Rodwell alone ranges the angels for songs of praise; at 21:79 Itani alone uses the word sing, of the mountains with David; and at 73:4 all five describe how the Qur'an itself is to be voiced - Palmer has "chant the Qur'an chanting", Pickthall "chant the Qur'an in measure", Itani "chant the Quran rhythmically", Rodwell "with measured tone intone the Koran", Sale "repeat the Koran with a distinct and sonorous voice".
The verse most often brought to the question is 31:6, where a man buys something that leads others astray - and the five do not agree what he buys: sportive legends in Palmer, mere pastime of discourse in Pickthall, an idle tale in Rodwell, a ludicrous story in Sale, distracting tales in Itani. At 17:64 the voice that entices belongs to the one addressed in that passage, not to a singer. At 53:59-61 the charge is wondering, laughing and not weeping while amusing yourselves.
Whether music falls under speech that misleads, or under sung praise, is a step beyond these verses, taken by scholars on material this platform holds none of - and it is the step the verses do not take either.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
WHAT THIS STUDY DOES NOT ANSWER, and the layer that would. (1) THE JURISTIC RULINGS ON MUSIC, for and against, rest on and on schools' reasoning. No hadith source has cleared the rights audit and no juristic source is held, so this study reports what the verses say and stops. Silence in the text is not a permission and it is not a prohibition; it is silence, and saying so is the finding. (2) What the commentators make of 31:6 - several read it as covering song - is , and that layer is empty. (3) Whether any particular instrument, occasion or form is meant: the same layers, and the verses give no terms to work with.
What this rests on
Opens with 31:6, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And of mankind is he who payeth for mere pastime of discourse, that he may mislead from Allah's way without knowledge, and maketh it the butt of mockery. For such there is a shameful doom
And amongst men is one who buys sportive legends, to lead astray from God's path, without knowledge, and to make a jest of it; these, for them is shameful woe
But a man there is who buyeth an idle tale, that in his lack of knowledge he may mislead others from the way of God, and turn it to scorn. For such is prepared a shameful punishment
There is a man who purchaseth a ludicrous story, that he may seduce men from the way of God, without knowledge, and may laugh the same to scorn: These shall suffer a shameful punishment

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
SEED. 'music' returned ZERO verses across all five renderings, and that is the study's first finding rather than an empty result to be worked around. 'idle discourse' returned three verses - 19:62, 31:6 and 88:11 - of which 31:6 is the one the question is usually put to; 19:62 and 88:11 describe speech in the garden and are not about the subject.
WHERE THE RENDERINGS PART COMPANY, NAMED, and here the split is the finding. At 31:6 the object purchased is 'sportive legends' (Palmer), 'mere pastime of discourse' (Pickthall), 'an idle tale' (Rodwell), 'a ludicrous story' (Sale) and 'distracting tales' (Itani). Five renderings, five wordings, and no music in any of them. At 17:64 all five have the voice belong to the addressee of that passage.
THE ZERO, AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD, WITH PROBES. Each probe is matched as a whole word, case-insensitively, over all 31,173 rendering rows of the five cleared renderings: 'music' returns 0. 'song|songs|sing|singing' returns 5 rows, at 19:11 (Rodwell alone), 21:79 (Itani alone), 34:10 (Rodwell and Sale), 37:1 (Rodwell alone). 'instrument|flute|lute|drum|pipe' returns 1 row, 24:33 (Sale alone), where the word is a written instrument; their plural forms 'instruments|flutes|lutes|drums|pipes', which whole-word matching does not catch, return one more, 36:28 (Sale alone), instruments of destruction: two rows in all, both Sale, neither a musical instrument. 'melody|tune|chant' returns 3 rows, all at 73:4 (Itani, Palmer and Pickthall). 'voice' returns 38 rows, recorded as context for 17:64. Rodwell's rendering at 32:26 has the word 'sings' where the other renderings that carry the word have 'signs': a misprint, which whole-word matching does not count as a hit for 'sing'. THE ZERO IS THE WORD'S, NOT THE SUBJECT'S, and the paragraph that says so is scoped by authority throughout because its claims ride on particular renderings.
Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted in choosing this study's verses. Where a sentence here counts or compares the renderings, it has been checked against all five.
