What does the Qur'an say about omens and superstition?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 7:131 But whenever good befell them they said: THIS IS OURS; and whenever evil smote them THEY ASCRIBED IT TO THE EVIL AUGURY OF MOSES AND THOSE WITH HIM. Surely their evil augury was only in the hands of God, but most of them knew not. In because it names the asymmetry precisely - credit taken, blame projected - which is the psychology of the whole practice.
  2. 02 27:47 They said: WE AUGUR EVIL OF THEE AND THOSE WITH THEE. He said: YOUR EVIL AUGURY IS WITH GOD. Nay, but ye are folk that are being tested. In because it is the accusation and the reply in one verse, and the reply relocates the omen rather than denying that events have meaning.
  3. 03 36:18–19 They said: WE AUGUR ILL OF YOU. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands. THEY SAID: YOUR EVIL AUGURY BE WITH YOU! IS IT BECAUSE YE ARE REMINDED OF THE TRUTH? In as ONE PASSAGE because it shows the omen-charge used as a pretext for a threat, and the answer names what is really being objected to.
  4. 04 17:13 AND EVERY MAN'S AUGURY HAVE WE FASTENED TO HIS OWN NECK, and We shall bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a book which he will find wide open. In because it is the Qur'an's own resolution of the subject: the omen is not in the bird or the day, it is fastened to the person. ALSO CARRIED by recording-angels, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an does not argue that omens are ineffective. It argues about where they are located, and 17:13 is the resolution.

AND EVERY MAN'S AUGURY HAVE WE FASTENED TO HIS OWN NECK - his omen, his bird, his fate, depending on the rendering. The word all four translators wrestle with is the ordinary Arabic term for an omen taken from birds. And the verse says it is tied to the person's own neck, and then that a book will be produced for him wide open.

Whatever is going to happen to you is attached to you, not read off the world.

The three narrative verses show the practice in use, and in every case it is used to blame a messenger.

7:131 gives the psychology in one sentence: when good came they said THIS IS OURS; when evil came THEY ASCRIBED IT TO THE EVIL AUGURY OF MOSES. Credit kept, blame exported.

27:47 and 36:18 are the same charge brought against Salih and against the messengers of a township: WE AUGUR EVIL OF THEE. And in both the reply is the same move - YOUR EVIL AUGURY IS WITH GOD, or BE WITH YOU. The omen is handed back.

36:19 then names what is actually being objected to: IS IT BECAUSE YE ARE REMINDED OF THE TRUTH? And 36:18 shows what the accusation was for - a threat of stoning.

So the Qur'an treats omen-reading as a way of assigning blame for misfortune to someone inconvenient, and answers it by relocating the whole apparatus to the person's own record.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 7:131, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Talal Itani2012 Whoever is guided-is guided for his own good. And whoever goes astray-goes astray to his detriment. No burdened soul carries the burdens of another, nor do We ever punish until We have sent a messenger.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Whosoever goeth right, it is only for (the good of) his own soul that he goeth right, and whosoever erreth, erreth only to its hurt. No laden soul can bear another's load, We never punish until we have sent a messenger

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He who accepts guidance, accepts it only for his own soul: and he who errs, errs only against it; nor shall one burdened soul bear the burden of another. Nor would we punish until we had sent an apostle

John Medows Rodwell1861 For his own good only shall the guided yield to guidance, and to his own loss only shall the erring err; and the heavy laden shall not be laden with another's load. We never punished until we had first sent an apostle

George Sale1734 He who shall be rightly directed, shall be directed to the advantage only of his own soul; and he who shall err, shall err only against the same: Neither shall any laden soul be charged with the burden of another. We did not punish any people, until we had first sent an apostle to warn them

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:131, 27:47, 36:18-19, 17:13, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - their + evil + augury + is + with + god; they + ascribed + their + evil + fortune; your + evil + augury + be + with + yourselves; we + augur + ill + of + thee. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
