As the two receivers receive, seated to the right and to the left.
What does the Qur'an say about the two angels who record every deed?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 50:17–18 WHEN THE TWO RECEIVERS RECEIVE (HIM), SEATED ON THE RIGHT HAND AND ON THE LEFT. HE UTTERETH NO WORD BUT THERE IS WITH HIM AN OBSERVER READY. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only place in the Qur'an describing two recorders, their positions, and what they take down - and 50:18 specifies SPEECH.
- 02 82:10–12 Lo, there are above you GUARDIANS, GENEROUS AND RECORDING, WHO KNOW (ALL) THAT YE DO. In as ONE PASSAGE because it gives them three attributes - watching, honourable, writing - and the claim that they know everything done.
- 03 43:80 Or deem they that We cannot hear their secret thoughts and their private confidences? Nay, but OUR ENVOYS, PRESENT WITH THEM, DO RECORD. In because it extends the recording to what is said privately and to what is thought, and it is offered as an answer to people who assumed otherwise.
- 04 17:13–14 And every man's augury have We fastened to his own neck, and We shall bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection A BOOK WHICH HE WILL FIND WIDE OPEN. Read thy book. THY SOUL SUFFICETH AS RECKONER AGAINST THEE THIS DAY. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is what the recording produces, and because the reader of the record turns out to be the person themselves. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 05 13:11 For him are angels ranged before him and behind him, WHO GUARD HIM BY GOD'S COMMAND. In because it describes attendant angels in a protective rather than a clerical role, which is the other function the text gives them.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an describes this in three places and gives fewer details than the tradition built on it.
50:17-18 is the fullest: WHEN THE TWO RECEIVERS RECEIVE (HIM), SEATED ON THE RIGHT HAND AND ON THE LEFT. HE UTTERETH NO WORD BUT THERE IS WITH HIM AN OBSERVER READY.
Two of them, one on each side. And note what 50:18 specifies: no WORD is uttered without an observer present. The verse names speech.
82:10-12 gives them three qualities: GUARDIANS, GENEROUS or honourable, AND RECORDING - and adds that they KNOW ALL THAT YE DO.
43:80 extends the range beyond speech, and it is framed as a correction: do they think We cannot hear their secret thoughts and private confidences? NAY, BUT OUR ENVOYS, PRESENT WITH THEM, DO RECORD. The recording covers what is said in private.
13:11 describes attendant angels doing something else entirely - ranged before and behind, WHO GUARD HIM BY GOD'S COMMAND. Protection rather than clerical work.
17:13-14 is what the recording is for, and it contains the strangest thing in the set. The book is produced WIDE OPEN, and the instruction is READ THY BOOK - THY SOUL SUFFICETH AS RECKONER AGAINST THEE THIS DAY. The person is handed the record and told to audit themselves.
What the Qur'an does not supply are the names, the division of labour between the right and the left, the delay before a bad deed is written, or any of the detail familiar from later literature. That is , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 50:17–18, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Whoever is guided-is guided for his own good. And whoever goes astray-goes astray to his detriment. No burdened soul carries the burdens of another, nor do We ever punish until We have sent a messenger.
Whosoever goeth right, it is only for (the good of) his own soul that he goeth right, and whosoever erreth, erreth only to its hurt. No laden soul can bear another's load, We never punish until we have sent a messenger
He who accepts guidance, accepts it only for his own soul: and he who errs, errs only against it; nor shall one burdened soul bear the burden of another. Nor would we punish until we had sent an apostle
For his own good only shall the guided yield to guidance, and to his own loss only shall the erring err; and the heavy laden shall not be laden with another's load. We never punished until we had first sent an apostle
He who shall be rightly directed, shall be directed to the advantage only of his own soul; and he who shall err, shall err only against the same: Neither shall any laden soul be charged with the burden of another. We did not punish any people, until we had first sent an apostle to warn them

The translators word this verse differently
When We decide to destroy a town, We command its affluent ones, they transgress in it, so the word becomes justified against it, and We destroy it completely.
And when We would destroy a township We send commandment to its folk who live at ease, and afterward they commit abomination therein, and so the Word (of doom) hath effect for it, and we annihilate it with complete annihilation
And when we desired to destroy a city we bade the opulent ones thereof; and they wrought abomination therein; and its due sentence was pronounced; and we destroyed it with utter destruction
And when we willed to destroy a city, to its affluent ones did we address our bidding; but when they acted criminally therein, just was its doom, and we destroyed it with an utter destruction
And when We resolved to destroy a city, We commanded the inhabitants thereof, who lived in affluence, to obey our apostle; but they acted corruptly herein: Wherefore the sentence was justly pronounced against that city; and We destroyed it with an utter destruction

He has a succession; before him and behind him, protecting him by God's command. God does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. And if God wills any hardship for a people, there is no turning it back;, and apart from Him they have no protector.

For him are angels ranged before him and behind him, who guard him by Allah's command. Lo! Allah changeth not the condition of a folk until they (first) change that which is in their hearts; and if Allah willeth misfortune for a folk there is none that can repel it, nor have they a defender beside Him
Each of them has pursuers before him and behind him, to keep guard over him at the command of God; verily, God changes not what a people has until they change it for themselves. And when God wishes evil to a people there is no averting it, nor have they a protector beside Him
Each hath a succession of Angels before him and behind him, who watch over him by God's behest. Verily, God will not change his gifts to men, till they change what is in themselves: and when God willeth evil unto men, there is none can turn it away, nor have they any protector beside Him
Each of them hath angels mutually succeeding each other, before him, and behind him; they watch him by the command of God. Verily God will not change his grace which is in men, until they change the disposition in their souls by sin. When God willeth evil on a people, there shall be none to avert it; neither shall they have any protector beside Him

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 50:17-18, 82:10-12, 43:80, 17:13-14, 13:11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - two + receivers + receive; seated + on + the + right + hand + and + on + the + left; he + uttereth + no + word + but + there + is + with + him + an + observer; guardians + watching + over + you; noble + and + recording. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
