The Day when neither wealth nor children will help.
What does the Qur'an mean by a 'sound heart'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 26:88–89 The day when wealth and sons avail not, SAVE HIM WHO BRINGETH UNTO GOD A WHOLE HEART. In as ONE PASSAGE because 26:88 supplies what the heart is being contrasted with - wealth and sons - and the phrase means little without it.
- 02 37:84 When he came unto his Lord WITH A WHOLE HEART. In because it is the only place the phrase is applied to a named person, and that person is Abraham.
- 03 11:120 And all that We relate unto thee of the story of the messengers is in order that thereby WE MAY MAKE FIRM THY HEART. In because it names something that acts ON the heart, and the something is narrative - the stories themselves are the instrument.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase occurs twice, and the second occurrence tells you who it describes.
26:89 is the famous one, and it needs 26:88 in front of it: THE DAY WHEN WEALTH AND SONS AVAIL NOT - save him who comes to God with a whole heart. The sound heart is defined by what it is set against. Two things that normally count for everything are named and cancelled, and the one remaining asset is a condition of the heart.
37:84 attaches it to Abraham: when he came to his Lord with a whole heart. That is the only person in the Qur'an of whom it is said.
What the four translators do with the word is worth a reader's attention: a WHOLE heart, a SOUND heart, a CLEAN heart, a heart FREE from evil. The English choices pull between undamaged and undivided. The text does not define it.
11:120 is carried here because it is the only verse in these renderings that says what makes a heart firm, and the answer is unexpected: the STORIES OF THE MESSENGERS are related to the Prophet in order to steady his heart. Not an argument, not a command - narrative.
What the text does not give is a list of qualities, a test, or a method. The heart is a major subject in the Qur'an and this particular phrase is a small part of it; hearts that harden are carried by What does the Qur'an say about hearts that harden?, and the heart at rest by What does the Qur'an say about the heart finding rest in remembrance?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 26:88–89, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Had your Lord willed, He could have made humanity one community, but they continue to differ.
And if thy Lord had willed, He verily would have made mankind one nation, yet they cease not differing
Had thy Lord pleased, He would have made men one nation; but they will not cease to differ
Had thy Lord pleased he would have made mankind of one religion: but those only to whom thy Lord hath granted his mercy will cease to differ
And if thy Lord pleased, He would have made all men of one religion: But they shall not cease to differ among themselves

Except those on whom your Lord has mercy-for that reason He created them. The Word of your Lord is final: "I will fill Hell with jinn and humans, altogether."
Save him on whom thy Lord hath mercy; and for that He did create them. And the Word of thy Lord hath been fulfilled: Verily I shall fill hell with the jinn and mankind together
save those thy Lord has had mercy on. For this has He created them, and the word of thy Lord is fulfilled, 'I will surely fill hell with ginns and mankind altogether
And unto this hath He created them; for the word of thy Lord shall be fulfilled, "I will wholly fill hell with Djinn and men
unless those on whom thy Lord shall have mercy: And unto this hath He created them; for the word of thy Lord shall be fulfilled, when He said, verily I will fill hell altogether with genii and men

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 26:88-89, 37:84, 11:120, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - sound + heart; whole + heart; clean + heart; heart + free; sincere + heart. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim about the Arabic root of the word for sound was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
