Say, "Believe in it, or do not believe." Those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, they fall to their chins, prostrating.
What does the Qur'an say about prostrating when certain verses are recited?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 17:107–109 In as ONE PASSAGE because the three verses are one continuous description and the middle one gives the words spoken: those who were given knowledge before it, WHEN IT IS READ UNTO THEM, FALL DOWN PROSTRATE ON THEIR FACES, ADORING - saying, glory to our Lord, verily the promise of our Lord must be fulfilled - THEY FALL DOWN ON THEIR FACES, WEEPING, AND IT INCREASETH HUMILITY IN THEM. Carried because it is the fullest description in the set and because it happens twice within it.
- 02 19:58 CARRIED WITH ITS SUBJECT NAMED: the verse's subject is THE PROPHETS - of the seed of Adam, of those carried with Noah, of the seed of Abraham and Israel - and its closing clause is that WHEN THE REVELATIONS OF THE BENEFICENT WERE RECITED UNTO THEM, THEY FELL DOWN, ADORING AND WEEPING. Carried for that clause, with the reader told it describes the prophets rather than instructing a congregation.
- 03 84:21 And when the Qur'an is recited unto them, THEY WORSHIP NOT. NOTE THE RENDERINGS: not one of the four uses the word prostrate here - Sale and Pickthall have worship not, Rodwell has adore not, Palmer has do not adore. The verse is carried because it is the one that comes closest to a reproach for NOT doing it, and because that fact about the renderings belongs in the study.
- 04 32:15 ONLY THOSE BELIEVE in Our revelations who, WHEN THEY ARE REMINDED OF THEM, FALL DOWN PROSTRATE and hymn the praise of their Lord, and they are not scornful. This is here because it is the strongest of the four - it makes the response a test of belief rather than a description of a group.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Every one of these verses DESCRIBES people prostrating when the text is recited. None of them instructs anyone to do it.
That is the finding, and the difference matters.
17:107-109 is the fullest: those given knowledge before it, when it is read to them, fall on their faces adoring - and then, after the words they say, the verse repeats it - they fall on their faces WEEPING, and it increases their humility. 19:58 says the same of the prophets, in a verse whose subject is the prophets and not a rule of recitation. 32:15 goes furthest and makes the response a mark of belief: only those believe who, when reminded of the revelations, fall down prostrate and are not scornful. And 84:21 comes at it negatively - when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not.
So there is a response the text clearly approves and twice describes in detail, and once treats as diagnostic of faith.
What is not there is the ritual. The practice of sujud al-tilawa - that specific verses trigger a prostration, which verses those are, how many there are, whether it is required or recommended, whether the reciter and the listener both perform it, what is said in it - none of that is in these verses. The lists of prostration verses that appear in printed copies of the Qur'an are a product of the tradition, not of the text.
One thing a reader can only see with four renderings side by side, and it belongs here. 84:21 is regularly cited as the reproach for failing to prostrate at recitation. Not one of our four translators uses the word prostrate in it. Sale and Pickthall have worship not; Rodwell has adore not; Palmer has do not adore.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 17:107–109, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Had We willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the declaration from Me will come true: "I will fill Hell with jinn and humans, altogether."
And if We had so willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me concerning evildoers took effect: that I will fill hell with the jinn and mankind together
Had we pleased we would have given to everything its guidance; but the sentence was due from me;-I will surely fill hell with the ginns and with men all together
Had we pleased we had certainly given to every soul its guidance. But true shall be the word which hath gone forth from me - I will surely fill hell with Djinn and men together
If we had pleased, we had certainly given unto every soul its direction: But the word which hath proceeded from Me must necessarily be fulfilled, when I said, verily I will fill hell with genii and men, altogether

So taste, because you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours; We have forgotten you; so taste the eternal torment for what you used to do.
So taste (the evil of your deeds). Forasmuch as ye forgot the meeting of this your day, lo! We forget you. Taste the doom of immortality because of what ye used to do
So taste ye, for that ye forgat the meeting of this day of yours,- verily, we have forgotten you! and taste ye the torment of eternity for that which ye have done
Taste then the recompense of your having forgotten the meeting with this your day. We, too, we have forgotten you: taste then an eternal punishment for that which ye have wrought
Taste therefore the torment prepared for you, because ye have forgotten the coming of this your day: We also have forgotten you; taste therefore a punishment of eternal duration, for that which ye have wrought

Their sides shun their beds, as they pray to their Lord, out of reverence and hope; and from Our provisions to them, they give.
Who forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of that We have bestowed on them
As their sides forsake their beds, they call upon their Lord with fear and hope; and of what we have bestowed upon them do they give alms
Who, as they raise them from their couches, call on their Lord with fear and desire, and give alms of that with which we have supplied them
Their sides are raised from their beds, calling on their Lord with fear and with hope; and they distribute alms out of what We have bestowed on them

The translators word this verse differently
No soul knows what eye's delight awaits them-a reward for what they used to do.
No soul knoweth what is kept hid for them of joy, as a reward for what they used to do
No soul knows what is reserved for them of cheerfulness for eye, as a reward for that which they have done
No soul knoweth what joy of the eyes is reserved for the good in recompense of their works
No soul knoweth the complete satisfaction which is secretly prepared for them, as a reward for that which they have wrought
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 17:107-109, 19:58, 84:21, 32:15, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim about the Arabic verb at 84:21 was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
