When the sky is ruptured.
What does Surah al-Inshiqaaq say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 84:1 When the heaven is split asunder. This is here because it opens the surah on the sky, and how it is torn is worded differently: "rent in sunder" in Sale, "rent asunder" in Palmer, "split asunder" in Pickthall and "ruptured" in Itani.
- 02 84:2 And attentive to her Lord in fear. This is here because it says the sky heeds its Lord, and the heeding differs: "shall obey its Lord, and shall be capable thereof" in Sale, "duteously obeyed its Lord" in Rodwell, "gives ear unto its Lord, and is dutiful" in Palmer, "attentive to her Lord in fear" in Pickthall and "hearkens to its Lord, as it must" in Itani.
- 03 84:3 And when the earth is spread out. This is here because it turns to the earth: "stretched out" in Sale and Palmer, "stretched out as a plain" in Rodwell, "spread out" in Pickthall and "leveled out" in Itani.
- 04 84:4 And hath cast out all that was in her, and is empty. This is here because it says the earth gives up what it holds: "cast forth that which is therein, and shall remain empty" in Sale, "cast forth what was in her and become empty" in Rodwell, "casts forth what is in it, and is empty" in Palmer, "cast out all that was in her" in Pickthall and "casts out what is in it, and becomes empty" in Itani.
- 05 84:5 And attentive to her Lord in fear. This is here because it says of the earth what was said of the sky, in the same words in each rendering: "shall obey its Lord, and shall be capable thereof" in Sale and "hearkens to its Lord, as it must" in Itani.
- 06 84:6 Thou, verily, O man, art working toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence). This is here because it addresses man labouring toward his Lord: "verily labouring thou labourest to meet thy Lord" in Sale, "who desirest to reach thy Lord" in Rodwell, "thou are toiling after thy Lord, toiling" in Palmer, "art working toward thy Lord a work" in Pickthall and "You are laboring towards your Lord" in Itani. The bracket in Pickthall's "a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence)" is his own.
- 07 84:7 Then whoso is given his account in his right hand. This is here because it speaks of whoever is given his book in his right hand, and what is given is "his book" in Sale, Palmer and Itani, "his Book" in Rodwell and "his account" in Pickthall. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 08 84:8 He truly will receive an easy reckoning. This is here because it says what that person receives: "an easy account" in Sale, "an easy reckoning" in Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall and "an easy settlement" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 09 84:9 And will return unto his folk in joy. This is here because it says that person returns to his people glad: "unto his family with joy" in Sale, "rejoicing, to his kindred" in Rodwell, "to his family joyfully" in Palmer, "unto his folk in joy" in Pickthall and "to his family delighted" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 10 84:10 But whoso is given his account behind his back. This is here because it speaks of whoever is given his book behind his back: "his book" in Sale, Palmer and Itani, "whose Book" in Rodwell and "his account" in Pickthall. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 11 84:11 He surely will invoke destruction. This is here because it says what that person will call for: "destruction" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall, where Itani has "call for death". Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 12 84:12 And be thrown to scorching fire. This is here because it says where that person goes: "sent into hell to be burned" in Sale, "in the fire shall he burn" in Rodwell, "broil in a blaze" in Palmer, "thrown to scorching fire" in Pickthall and "enter the Blaze" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?, with a different reason there.
- 13 84:13 He verily lived joyous with his folk. This is here because it gives the reason, how that person lived among his own: "rejoiced insolently amidst his family" in Sale, "lived joyously among his kindred" in Rodwell, "amongst his family joyful" in Palmer, "lived joyous with his folk" in Pickthall and "happy among his family" in Itani.
- 14 84:14 He verily deemed that he would never return (unto Allah). This is here because it says that person thought there would be no return, and to whom differs: "return unto God" in Sale, "return to God" in Rodwell and Palmer and "never return (unto Allah)" in Pickthall, with a bracket of his own, while Itani has "He thought he would never return" and names nobody.
- 15 84:15 Nay, but lo! his Lord is ever looking on him. This is here because it answers that thought: "his Lord beheld him" in Sale and Rodwell, "his Lord on him did look" in Palmer, "his Lord is ever looking on him" in Pickthall and "his Lord was watching him" in Itani.
- 16 84:16 Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset. This is here because the renderings divide over whether an oath is sworn: Sale has "I swear by the redness of the sky after sun-set", Pickthall "I swear by the afterglow of sunset" and Itani "I swear by the twilight", where Rodwell has "It needs not therefore that I swear by the sunset redness" and Palmer "I need not swear by the evening glow". This study does not choose between them.
- 17 84:17 And by the night and all that it enshroudeth. This is here because it adds the night, and what the night does: "the animals which it driveth together" in Sale, "its gatherings" in Rodwell, "what it drives together" in Palmer, "all that it enshroudeth" in Pickthall and "what it covers" in Itani.
- 18 84:18 And by the moon when she is at the full. This is here because it adds the moon at its full: "when she is at the full" in Sale and Pickthall, "when at her full" in Rodwell, "when it is at its full" in Palmer and "as it grows full" in Itani.
- 19 84:19 That ye shall journey on from plane to plane. This is here because it says what is passed through: "from state to state" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "from plane to plane" in Pickthall and "stage by stage" in Itani.
- 20 84:20 What aileth them, then, that they believe not. This is here because it asks what ails those who do not believe, and Sale alone names what is not believed: "that they believe not the resurrection".
- 21 84:21 And, when the Qur'an is recited unto them, worship not (Allah). This is here because it asks what holds them back when the recitation is read to them, and the act they fail in is "worship not" in Sale and Pickthall, "adore not" in Rodwell, "do not adore" in Palmer and "do not bow down" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(Allah)" is his own. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about prostrating when certain verses are recited?, with a different reason there.
- 22 84:22 Nay, but those who disbelieve will deny. This is here because it says those who disbelieve deny it: "accuse the same of imposture" in Sale, "treat it as a lie" in Rodwell, "do say it is a lie" in Palmer, "will deny" in Pickthall and "are in denial" in Itani.
- 23 84:23 And Allah knoweth best what they are hiding. This is here because it says God knows what they hide: "the malice which they keep hidden in their breasts" in Sale, "their secret hatreds" in Rodwell, "the (malice) that they hide" in Palmer, whose bracket is his own, "what they are hiding" in Pickthall and "what they hide inside" in Itani.
- 24 84:24 So give them tidings of a painful doom. This is here because it says what they are to be told: "denounce unto them a grievous punishment" in Sale, "Let their only tidings be those of painful punishment" in Rodwell, "give them the glad tidings of grievous woe" in Palmer, "give them tidings of a painful doom" in Pickthall and "inform them of a painful punishment" in Itani.
- 25 84:25 Save those who believe and do good works, for theirs is a reward unfailing. This is here because it closes the surah on those excepted, who believe and do good, and their reward is "a never failing reward" in Sale, "An unfailing recompense" in Rodwell, "hire that is not grudged" in Palmer, "a reward unfailing" in Pickthall and "an undiminished reward" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Inshiqaaq runs from 84:1 to 84:25. It opens on the sky torn open and the earth spread out and emptied, each heeding its Lord, then addresses man labouring toward his Lord and sets whoever is given his book in his right hand beside whoever is given it behind his back. At 84:16-18 the renderings divide over an oath: Sale has "Wherefore I swear by the redness of the sky after sun-set", Pickthall "Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset" and Itani "I swear by the twilight", where Rodwell has "It needs not therefore that I swear by the sunset redness" and Palmer "I need not swear by the evening glow"; this study does not choose between them. At 84:19 what is passed through is "from state to state" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "from plane to plane" in Pickthall and "stage by stage" in Itani. The surah closes on those who do not believe, and on a reward for those who believe and do good.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer about meaning, and which source would be needed. It does not say whether the oath near its end is sworn or declined, or what the book given in each hand is, in the sense the words carry in Arabic: that would need a commentary (), and this study holds none - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists.
What this rests on
Opens with 84:1, widening across 25 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 25 passages, each with every cleared translation
25 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. - Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.
CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

84:25 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five English translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 84:1-25, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah al-Inshiqaaq, from 84:1 to 84:25, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
What this study does not answer about occasion, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any verse here was given: that would need an source (accounts of the occasions of revelation) whose usage rights can be verified, and this study holds none. It offers no academic-historical reading either: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
