He frowned and turned away.
What does Surah Abasa (He frowned) say?
In short
- The surah says: he frowned and turned away when the blind man approached him (80:1-2), and the one addressed gave his attention to another (80:5-6); it is a lesson for whoever wills (80:11-12); man is created from a sperm drop, put to death and resurrected (80:17-22); food comes out of the cracked soil (80:24-32); on the Day a person flees his own family (80:34-36); and some faces are radiant, while the renderings differ on what covers the others (80:38-41).
- The surah does not say: who frowned and turned away at 80:1, or who the blind man at 80:2 was; no translation names the blind man, and four name no one at 80:1, where the naming in Sale is his own.
- The rest comes from: who frowned at 80:1, who the blind man was, and on what occasion the verses were given are questions for commentary and the occasions of revelation, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
Where the renderings split
80:17, Itani: "How thankless he is"
80:17, Pickthall: "how ungrateful"
80:17, Palmer: "how ungrateful he is"
80:17, Rodwell: "What hath made him unbelieving"
80:17, Sale: "What hath seduced him to infidelity"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 80:1 He frowned and turned away. This is here because it opens the surah on a frowning and a turning away: "He frowned and turned away" in Pickthall and Itani and "He frowned and turned his back" in Palmer, where Sale has "The prophet frowned, and turned aside". The naming is Sale's own, and this study does not say who is meant. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 02 80:2 Because the blind man came unto him. This is here because it gives the cause, the coming of the blind man: "because the blind man came unto him" in Sale, "Because the blind man came to him" in Rodwell, "there came to him a blind man" in Palmer, "Because the blind man came unto him" in Pickthall and "When the blind man approached him" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 03 80:3 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace). This is here because it asks the addressee how he could know what might come of the blind man, and the renderings differ: "be cleansed from his sins" in Sale, "be cleansed by the Faith" in Rodwell, "be purified" in Palmer, "grow (in grace)" in Pickthall and "seeking to purify himself" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket is his own. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 04 80:4 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him. This is here because it adds that the blind man might be reminded and helped by it: "the admonition shall profit him" in Sale, "the warning profit him" in Rodwell, "the reminder profit him" in Palmer, "the reminder might avail him" in Pickthall and "the message would benefit him" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 05 80:5 As for him who thinketh himself independent. This is here because it turns to the other man, named differently: "The man who is wealthy" in Sale, "him who is wealthy" in Rodwell and Palmer, "him who thinketh himself independent" in Pickthall and "him who was indifferent" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 06 80:6 Unto him thou payest regard. This is here because it says that the addressee gave him attention: "thou receivest respectfully" in Sale, "thou wast all attention" in Rodwell, "thou dost attend to him" in Palmer, "thou payest regard" in Pickthall and "You gave him your attention" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 07 80:7 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). This is here because it says that his not growing clean is no charge on the addressee: "it is not to be charged on thee" in Sale, "is it not thy concern" in Rodwell, "thou dost not care that he is not purified" in Palmer, "it is not thy concern" in Pickthall and "you are not liable" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 08 80:8 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose. This is here because it turns back to the man who came in earnest: "earnestly seeking his salvation" in Sale, "in earnest" in Rodwell, "earnestly" in Palmer, "with earnest purpose" in Pickthall and "seeking" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 09 80:9 And hath fear. This is here because it says how he came: "who feareth God" in Sale, "full of fears" in Rodwell, "fearing the while" in Palmer, "hath fear" in Pickthall and "In awe" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 10 80:10 From him thou art distracted. This is here because it says that the addressee turned from him: "dost thou neglect" in Sale and Rodwell, "thou art diverted" in Palmer, "thou art distracted" in Pickthall and "you were inattentive" in Itani. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 11 80:11 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment. This is here because it refuses that conduct and names what the message is. Sale has "By no means shouldest thou act thus" and Itani "Do not", and the message is "a warning" in Rodwell, "a memorial" in Palmer, "an Admonishment" in Pickthall and "a Lesson" in Itani. Rodwell's bracket "(the Koran)" is his own. Also carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with a different reason there.
- 12 80:12 So let whosoever will pay heed to it. This is here because it says that whoever will may keep it in mind: "he who is willing retaineth the same" in Sale, "whoso is willing beareth it in mind" in Rodwell, "whoso pleases will remember it" in Palmer, "let whosoever will pay heed to it" in Pickthall and "Whoever wills, shall remember it" in Itani. Sale alone names it here, as "the Koran".
- 13 80:13 On honoured leaves. This is here because it says where it is set down: "in volumes honourable" in Sale, "on honoured pages" in Rodwell, "In honoured pages" in Palmer, "On honoured leaves" in Pickthall and "On honorable pages" in Itani.
- 14 80:14 Exalted, purified. This is here because it calls those pages raised up and clean: "exalted, and pure" in Sale, "Exalted, purified" in Rodwell and Pickthall, "exalted, purified" in Palmer and "Exalted and purified" in Itani.
- 15 80:15 (Set down) by scribes. This is here because it names the hands that hold them: "by the hands of scribes honoured" in Sale, "By the hands of Scribes" in Rodwell, "(Set down) by scribes" in Pickthall and "By the hands of scribes" in Itani, where Palmer has "in the hands of" and completes the phrase at the next verse. Pickthall's bracket is his own.
- 16 80:16 Noble and righteous. This is here because it describes those scribes: "and just" in Sale, "honoured, righteous" in Rodwell, "noble, righteous scribes" in Palmer, "Noble and righteous" in Pickthall and "Noble and devoted" in Itani. Rodwell's words here are the same as at the verse before.
- 17 80:17 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful. This is here because it turns on man with a curse and a question, worded very differently: "May man be cursed" in Sale, "Cursed be man" in Rodwell, "May man be killed" in Palmer, "Man is (self-)destroyed" in Pickthall and "Perish man" in Itani. What follows is "What hath seduced him to infidelity" in Sale and "What hath made him unbelieving" in Rodwell, where Palmer has "how ungrateful he is", Pickthall "how ungrateful" and Itani "How thankless he is". This study does not choose between them.
- 18 80:18 From what thing doth He create him. This is here because it asks from what man is made: "Of what thing doth God create him" in Sale, "Of what thing did God create him" in Rodwell, "Of what did He create him" in Palmer and "From what thing doth He create him" in Pickthall, and Itani has "From what did He create him".
- 19 80:19 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him. This is here because it answers, and the substance named differs: "a drop of seed" in Sale and Pickthall, "moist germs" in Rodwell, "a clot" in Palmer and "a sperm drop" in Itani. What is then done with him is "He formeth him with proportion" in Sale, "fated him" in Palmer, "proportioneth him" in Pickthall and "enabled him" in Itani.
- 20 80:20 Then maketh the way easy for him. This is here because it says that his way was made easy: "facilitateth his passage out of the womb" in Sale, "an easy passage from the womb" in Rodwell, "the path He did make easy for him" in Palmer, "maketh the way easy for him" in Pickthall and "He eased the way for him" in Itani. Sale and Rodwell name the womb, and the others do not.
- 21 80:21 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him. This is here because it tells of his death and burial: "causeth him to die, and layeth him in the grave" in Sale, "causeth him to die and burieth him" in Rodwell, "He killed him, and laid him in the tomb" in Palmer, "causeth him to die, and burieth him" in Pickthall and "He puts him to death, and buries him" in Itani.
- 22 80:22 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. This is here because it tells of his raising when God wills: "He shall raise him to life" in Sale, "will raise him again to life" in Rodwell, "will He raise him up again" in Palmer, "He bringeth him again to life" in Pickthall and "He will resurrect him" in Itani.
- 23 80:23 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. This is here because it says that man has not yet done what he was bidden: "He hath not hitherto fully performed what God hath commanded him" in Sale, "man hath not yet fulfilled the bidding of his Lord" in Rodwell, "he has not fulfilled his bidding" in Palmer, "hath not done what He commanded him" in Pickthall and "he did not fulfill what He has commanded him" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(man)" is his own.
- 24 80:24 Let man consider his food. This is here because it bids man look at his food: "Let man consider his food" in Sale, Pickthall and Itani, "Let man look at his food" in Rodwell and "let man look unto his foods" in Palmer. Sale alone adds "in what manner it is provided".
- 25 80:25 How We pour water in showers. This is here because it tells of the water poured down: "water by showers" in Sale, "the copious rains" in Rodwell, "the water out in torrents" in Palmer, "water in showers" in Pickthall and "water in abundance" in Itani.
- 26 80:26 Then split the earth in clefts. This is here because it tells of the earth split open: "We cleave the earth in clefts" in Sale, "cleft the earth with clefts" in Rodwell, "we have cleft the earth asunder" in Palmer, "split the earth in clefts" in Pickthall and "crack the soil open" in Itani.
- 27 80:27 And cause the grain to grow therein. This is here because it names the grain brought out of it: "corn" in Sale and "the grain" in Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall, where Itani has "grains".
- 28 80:28 And grapes and green fodder. This is here because it names grapes and a green crop, and the second differs: "clover" in Sale, "healing herbs" in Rodwell, "the hay" in Palmer, "green fodder" in Pickthall and "herbs" in Itani.
- 29 80:29 And olive-trees and palm-trees. This is here because it names olives and palms: "the olive, and the palm" in Sale and Palmer, "the olive and the palm" in Rodwell, "olive-trees and palm-trees" in Pickthall and "olives and dates" in Itani.
- 30 80:30 And garden-closes of thick foliage. This is here because it names gardens: "gardens planted thick with trees" in Sale, "enclosed gardens thick with trees" in Rodwell, "gardens closely planted" in Palmer, "garden-closes of thick foliage" in Pickthall and "luscious gardens" in Itani.
- 31 80:31 And fruits and grasses. This is here because it names fruit and a second crop: "fruits, and grass" in Sale and Palmer, "fruits and herbage" in Rodwell, "fruits and grasses" in Pickthall and "fruits and vegetables" in Itani.
- 32 80:32 Provision for you and your cattle. This is here because it says for whom all this is: "for the use of yourselves and of your cattle" in Sale, "For the service of yourselves and of your cattle" in Rodwell, "a provision for you and for your cattle" in Palmer, "Provision for you and your cattle" in Pickthall and "Enjoyment for you, and for your livestock" in Itani.
- 33 80:33 But when the Shout cometh. This is here because it turns to the day of the great noise: "the stunning sound of the trumpet" in Sale, "the stunning trumpet-blast" in Rodwell, "the stunning noise" in Palmer, "the Shout" in Pickthall and "the Deafening Noise" in Itani.
- 34 80:34 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother. This is here because it says that on that day a man flees his brother: "a man fly from his brother" in Sale and Rodwell, "man shall flee from his brother" in Palmer, "a man fleeth from his brother" in Pickthall and "a person will flee from his brother" in Itani.
- 35 80:35 And his mother and his father. This is here because it adds the mother and the father: "his mother, and his father" in Sale and "his mother and his father" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani.
- 36 80:36 And his wife and his children. This is here because it adds the wife and the children: "his wife, and his children" in Sale, "his wife and his children" in Rodwell and Pickthall, "his spouse and his sons" in Palmer and "his consort and his children" in Itani.
- 37 80:37 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). This is here because it gives the reason, that each has enough of his own: "business of his own sufficient to employ his thoughts" in Sale, "his own concerns shall be enough" in Rodwell, "a business to employ him" in Palmer, "concern enough to make him heedless (of others)" in Pickthall and "enough to preoccupy him" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket is his own.
- 38 80:38 On that day faces will be bright as dawn. This is here because it tells of faces that shine that day: "the faces of some shall be bright" in Sale, "faces on that day radiant" in Rodwell, "Faces on that day shall be bright" in Palmer, "faces will be bright as dawn" in Pickthall and "Faces on that Day will be radiant" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about seeing God in paradise?, with a different reason there.
- 39 80:39 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. This is here because it says how those faces are: "laughing, and joyful" in Sale, "Laughing and joyous" in Rodwell, "laughing, joyous" in Palmer, "Laughing, rejoicing at good news" in Pickthall and "Laughing and rejoicing" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about seeing God in paradise?, with a different reason there.
- 40 80:40 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them. This is here because it tells of other faces, and what covers them differs: "there be dust" in Sale, "with dust upon them" in Rodwell and Pickthall and "have dust upon them" in Palmer, where Itani has "covered with misery".
- 41 80:41 Veiled in darkness. This is here because it says what darkens them: "darkness shall cover them" in Sale and Palmer, "Blackness shall cover them" in Rodwell, "Veiled in darkness" in Pickthall and "Overwhelmed by remorse" in Itani.
- 42 80:42 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. This is here because it closes on who these are, named differently: "the unbelievers, the wicked" in Sale, "the Infidels, the Impure" in Rodwell, "the wicked misbelievers" in Palmer, "the disbelievers, the wicked" in Pickthall and "the faithless, the vicious" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah Abasa runs from 80:1 to 80:42. It opens on a frowning and a turning away at the coming of the blind man, and asks the addressee how he could know that the blind man might be cleansed or reminded, while attention went elsewhere. At 80:5 who received that attention is "The man who is wealthy" in Sale, "him who is wealthy" in Rodwell and Palmer, "him who thinketh himself independent" in Pickthall and "him who was indifferent" in Itani. It calls the message a reminder for whoever will, set down on honoured pages. It asks from what man was made, and tells of his making, his way made easy, his death and his raising, and of the food brought out of the split earth for people and their cattle. It closes on the day when a man flees his brother, his mother and father, his wife and his children, and some faces are bright. At 80:40 the other faces have "dust upon them" in Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall, where Itani has "covered with misery".
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer about meaning, and which source would be needed. It does not say what the honoured pages and the scribes are, or what the blast on the day is, in the sense the words carry in Arabic: that would need a commentary (), a layer this platform does not hold or show.
What this rests on
Opens with 80:1, widening across 42 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 42 passages, each with every cleared translation
42 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

80:42 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five English translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 80:1-42, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography: they are layers this platform does not hold or show.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah Abasa, from 80:1 to 80:42, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
What this study does not answer about occasion, and which source would be needed. It does not say who is meant by him who frowned and turned away, who the blind man was, or who was given attention instead, or on what occasion any verse here was given: that would need an source (accounts of the occasions of revelation), a layer this platform does not hold or show. It offers no academic-historical reading either: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
