He frowned and turned away.
Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 80:1–11 HE FROWNED AND TURNED AWAY BECAUSE THE BLIND MAN CAME UNTO HIM. What could inform thee but that he might grow in grace, or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? As for him who thinketh himself independent, unto him thou payest regard - YET IT IS NOT THY CONCERN IF HE GROW NOT IN GRACE. But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose and hath fear - FROM HIM THOU ART DISTRACTED. Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment. In as ONE PASSAGE because the rebuke, its reasoning and its reversal of priorities are one movement, and because it is the sharpest correction in the book.
- 02 9:43 GOD FORGIVE THEE! WHEREFOR DIDST THOU GRANT THEM LEAVE ere those who told the truth were manifest to thee and thou didst know the liars? In because the correction opens with a pardon and then asks the question, and because the fault is a decision made too early.
- 03 8:67–68 IT IS NOT FOR ANY PROPHET TO HAVE CAPTIVES until he hath made slaughter in the land. YE DESIRE THE LURE OF THIS WORLD and God desireth for you the Hereafter. Had it not been for an ordinance of God which had gone before, an awful doom had come upon you on account of what ye took. In as ONE PASSAGE because the rebuke is about a decision after a battle and 8:68 states how serious it was. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of prisoners of war?, with a different reason there.
- 04 33:37 And thou didst hide in thy mind that which God was to bring to light, and THOU DIDST FEAR MANKIND WHEREAS GOD HAD A BETTER RIGHT THAT THOU SHOULDST FEAR HIM. In because it names an inward state - fear of what people would say - and corrects it.
- 05 66:1 O PROPHET, WHY BANNEST THOU THAT WHICH GOD HATH MADE LAWFUL FOR THEE, seeking to please thy wives? And God is Forgiving, Merciful. In because it corrects him for forbidding himself something permitted, which is the opposite of the fault a reader might expect.
- 06 17:73–75 And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee away from that wherewith We have inspired thee, that thou shouldst invent other than it against Us... AND IF WE HAD NOT MADE THEE WHOLLY FIRM, THOU MIGHTEST ALMOST HAVE INCLINED UNTO THEM A LITTLE. In as ONE PASSAGE because it records a near-failure rather than an actual one, and states plainly what would have followed.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Yes - repeatedly, and in one case at the opening of a whole surah.
80:1 begins: HE FROWNED AND TURNED AWAY BECAUSE THE BLIND MAN CAME TO HIM. What follows is a rebuke of a kind rarely aimed at a founder in any scripture. The Prophet had been occupied with a man of standing and was interrupted by a blind man seeking instruction. The passage reverses the priorities in front of him: AS FOR HIM WHO THINKETH HIMSELF INDEPENDENT, UNTO HIM THOU PAYEST REGARD - YET IT IS NOT THY CONCERN IF HE GROW NOT IN GRACE. And of the man who came in earnest: FROM HIM THOU ART DISTRACTED.
The other corrections cover a range of faults.
A decision made too early: 9:43 - GOD FORGIVE THEE, WHY DIDST THOU GRANT THEM LEAVE before you knew who was truthful? The pardon comes before the question.
A decision after a battle: 8:67 - it is not for a prophet to take captives, YE DESIRE THE LURE OF THIS WORLD - and 8:68 says only a prior decree averted an awful doom for it.
An inward state: 33:37 - THOU DIDST FEAR MANKIND WHEREAS GOD HAD A BETTER RIGHT that thou shouldst fear Him.
Excessive scruple: 66:1 - WHY BANNEST THOU THAT WHICH GOD HATH MADE LAWFUL FOR THEE, seeking to please thy wives?
And a near-miss: 17:74 - had We not made thee firm, THOU MIGHTEST ALMOST HAVE INCLINED unto them a little.
That a text preserves these is a fact about the text worth stating plainly. The study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet Muhammad? found the verses naming him are mostly about limits; these are about failings, and the book kept them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 80:1–11, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

80:6 so widmest du dich ihm,
80:6 Σ' αυτόν έδωσες προσοχή (ακούγοντάς τον);
80:10 Τον παραμελείς και στρέφεις την προσοχή σου σ' άλλον;
80:11 No! In verità questo è un Avvertimento –
80:1 1. Jis (t. y. Pranašas ﷺ ) susiraukė ir nusigręžė,
80:2 2. nes atėjo pas jį aklasis (įsiterpdamas).
80:8 8. Tačiau tam, kuris atėjo pas tave siekdamas (žinių)
80:9 9. bijodamas (Allaho ir Jo bausmės),
80:10 10. tam tu esi nedėmesingas.
80:11 11. Ne, iš tiesų, tai (t. y. šios eilutės) yra Priminimas,
80:1 Fuula guuree gara gale.[1]
80:2 Sababa jaamaan isatti dhufeef. [2]
80:3 Maaltu si beeksise? Qulqullaa’uun isaa ni kajeelama.
80:4 Yookiin gorfameeti gorsi isa fayyada.
80:5 Nama duroomee (iimaanarraa dantaa dhabe) immoo,
80:6 Ati [akka amananuuf jecha] gara isaa gara galta.
80:7 Haala qulqullaa'uu dhiisuun isaa homaa sirra hin jirreen.
80:8 Nama (toltuu barbaachaaf) fiigaa sitti dhufe immoo,
80:9 Kan Rabbiin sodaatu ta’ee,
80:10 Ati isa irraa dagatta.
80:11 Dhorgami! Isheen gorsa.
80:1 Alikunja kipaji na akageuka mbali.
80:2 Kwa sababu alimjia kipofu!
80:3 Na nini kitakachokujulisha pengine yeye atatakasika?
80:4 Au atawaidhika, na mawaidha yamfae?
80:5 Ama ajionaye hana haja,
80:6 Wewe ndiyo unamshughulikia?
80:7 Na si juu yako kama hakutakasika.
80:8 Ama anayekujia kwa juhudi.
80:9 Naye anaogopa,
80:10 Ndiyo wewe unampuuza?
80:11 Sivyo hivyo!
80:5 Kendini muhtaç hissetmeyene gelince;
80:6 Sen, ona yöneliyorsun.
80:7 (İstemiyorsa) arınmamasından sen sorumlu değilsin!
80:8 Fakat koşup sana gelen kimse;
80:9 (Allah'tan) korkuğu halde;
80:10 Sen onu bırakıp oyalanıyorsun.
80:11 Hayır. Bu ancak bir öğüttür.

May God pardon you! Why did you give them permission before it became clear to you who are the truthful ones, and who are the liars?

Allah forgive thee (O Muhammad)! Wherefor didst thou grant them leave ere those who told the truth were manifest to thee and thou didst know the liars
God forgive thee; why didst thou give them leave (to stay) until it was made manifest to thee who spake the truth - until thou mightest know the liars
God forgive thee! Why didst thou give them leave to stay behind, ere they who make true excuses had become known to thee, and thou hadst known the liars
God forgive thee! Why didst thou give them leave to stay at home, until they who speak the truth, when they excuse themselves, had become manifested unto thee, and thou hadst known the liars

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Only those who do not believe in God and the Last Day ask you for exemption. Their hearts are full of doubts, so they waver in their doubts.
They alone ask leave of thee who believe not in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts feel doubt, so in their doubt they waver
It is only those who believe not in God and in the last day who beg off from thee, and those whose hearts are in doubt, and in their doubt do hesitate
They only will ask thy leave who believe not in God and the last day, and whose hearts are full of doubts, and who are tossed up and down in their doubtings
Verily they only will ask leave of thee to stay behind, who believe not in God and the last day, and whose hearts doubt concerning the faith: Wherefore they are tossed to and fro in their doubting

When you said to him whom God had blessed, and you had favored, "Keep your wife to yourself, and fear God." But you hid within yourself what God was to reveal. And you feared the people, but it was God you were supposed to fear. Then, when Zaid ended his relationship with her, We gave her to you in marriage, that there may be no restriction for believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons, when their relationship has ended. The command of God was fulfilled.

And when thou saidst unto him on whom Allah hath conferred favour and thou hast conferred favour: Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear Allah. And thou didst hide in thy mind that which Allah was to bring to light, and thou didst fear mankind whereas Allah hath a better right that thou shouldst fear Him. So when Zeyd had performed that necessary formality (of divorce) from her, We gave her unto thee in marriage, so that (henceforth) there may be no sin for believers in respect of wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have performed the necessary formality (of release) from them. The commandment of Allah must be fulfilled
And when thou didst say to him God had shown favour to and thou hadst shown favour to, 'Keep thy wife to thyself and fear God;' and thou didst conceal in thy soul what God was about to display; and didst fear men, though God is more deserving that thou shouldst fear Him; and when Zaid had fulfilled his desire of her we did wed thee to her that there should be no hindrance to the believers in the matter of the wives of their adopted sons when they have fulfilled their desire of them: and so God's bidding to be done
And, remember, when thou saidst to him unto whom God had shewn favour, and to whom thou also hadst shewn favour, "Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear God;" and thou didst hide in thy mind what God would bring to light. and thou didst fear man; but more right had it been to fear God. And when Zaid had settled concerning her to divorce her, we married her to thee, that it might not be a crime in the faithful to marry the wives of their adopted sons, when they have settled the affair concerning them. And the behest of God is to be performed
And remember when thou saidst to him unto whom God had been gracious, and on whom thou also hadst conferred favours, keep thy wife to thy self, and fear God: And thou didst conceal that in thy mind which God had determined to discover, and didst fear men; whereas it was more just that thou shouldst fear God. But when Zeid had determined the matter concerning her, and had resolved to divorce her, we joined her in marriage unto thee; lest a crime should be charged on the true believers, in marrying the wives of their adopted sons, when they have determined the matter concerning them: And the command of God is to be performed

It is not for any believer, man or woman, when God and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have liberty of choice in their decision. Whoever disobeys God and His Messenger has gone far astray.
And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair; and whoso is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goeth astray in error manifest
It is not for a believing man or for a believing woman, when God and His Apostle have decided an affair, to have the choice in that affair; and whoso rebels against God and His Apostle has erred with an obvious error

There is no blame on the Prophet regarding what God has ordained for him. Such is the pattern of God among those who passed before. The command of God is an absolute decree.
There is no reproach for the Prophet in that which Allah maketh his due. That was Allah's way with those who passed away of old - and the commandment of Allah is certain destiny
There is no hindrance to the prophet about what God has ordained for him;-(such was) the course of God with those who have passed away before,- and God's bidding is a decreed decree

No crime is to be charged on the prophet, as to what God hath allowed him, conformable to the ordinance of God with regard to those who preceded him, -- for the command of God is a determinate decree

WHY, O Prophet! dost thou hold that to be FORBIDDEN which God hath made lawful to thee, from a desire to please thy wives, since God is Lenient, Merciful
O prophet, why holdest thou that to be prohibited which God hath allowed thee, seeking to please thy wives; since God is inclined to forgive and merciful

On the Day when We call every people with their leader. Whoever is given his record in his right hand-these will read their record, and they will not be wronged one bit.
On the day when We shall summon all men with their record, whoso is given his book in his right hand - such will read their book and they will not be wronged a shred
The day when we will call all men by their high priest; and he whose book is given in his right hand - these shall read their book, nor shall they be wronged a straw
One day we will summon all men with their leaders: they whose book shall be given into their right hand, shall read their book, and not be wronged a thread
On a certain day We will call all men to judgment with their respective leader: And whosoever shall have his book given him into his right hand, they shall read their book with joy and satisfaction; and they shall not be wronged a hair

But whoever is blind in this, he will be blind in the Hereafter, and further astray from the way.
Whoso is blind here will be blind in the Hereafter, and yet further from the road
But he who in this life is blind shall be blind in the next too, and err farther from the way
And he who has been blind here, shall be blind hereafter, and wander yet more from the way
And whoever hath been blind in this life, shall be also blind in the next, and shall wander more widely from the path of salvation

They almost provoked you, to expel you from the land. In that case, they would not have lasted after you, except briefly.
And they indeed wished to scare thee from the land that they might drive thee forth from thence, and then they would have stayed (there) but a little after thee
And they well-nigh enticed thee away from the land, to turn thee out therefrom; but then - they should not have tarried after thee except a little
And truly they had almost caused thee to quit the land, in order wholly to drive thee forth from it: but then, themselves should have tarried but a little after thee
The unbelievers had likewise almost caused thee to depart the land, that they might have expelled thee thence: But then should they not have tarried therein after thee, except a little while

The tradition of the messengers We sent before you-you will find no change in Our rules.
(Such was Our) method in the case of those whom We sent before thee (to mankind), and thou wilt not find for Our method aught of power to change
[This is] the course of those of our prophets whom we have sent before thee; and thou shalt find no change in our course
This was our way with the Apostles we have already sent before thee, and in this our way thou shalt find no change
This is the method of dealing which We have prescribed our selves in respect to our apostles, whom We have already sent before thee: And thou shalt not find any change in our prescribed method

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 80:1-11, 9:43, 8:67-68, 33:37, 66:1, 17:73-75, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - he + frowned + turned + away; god + forgive + thee + why + didst + thou; it + is + not + for + a + prophet; thou + wast + about + to + incline; seek + not + forgiveness + for + them. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 11 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:246 - a historical narrative; 3:161 - a general statement clearing prophets, not a correction; 4:102 - the fear-prayer instruction, taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying in fear or in battle?; 8:33 - reassurance; 8:72 - the emigrants; 9:40 - the cave; carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the peace (sakina) God sends down? and What does the Qur'an say about God's nearness in loneliness?; 33:50 - a dispensation, not a correction; 33:53 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?; 46:35 - exhortation, at most a mild correction; 58:8 - about the hypocrites; 65:1 - divorce procedure.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
