Not at all. But you do not honor the orphan.
What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 89:17–20 Nay, but ye honour not the orphan, and urge not one another to feed the poor, and ye devour heritages with devouring greed, AND LOVE WEALTH WITH ABOUNDING LOVE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the love of wealth is the last item in a list of four failures, and the first three are all about other people - the sequence is the argument.
- 02 100:6–8 Lo, man is an ingrate unto his Lord, and lo, he is a witness unto that; AND LO, IN THE LOVE OF WEALTH HE IS VIOLENT. In as ONE PASSAGE because the word the four translators reach for - violent, vehement, intense - is the strongest in the set, and 100:7 has the man witnessing against himself.
- 03 57:24 WHO HOARD AND WHO ENJOIN UPON THE PEOPLE AVARICE. And whosoever turneth away, still God is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise. In because it names the social form: not only hoarding but recommending it to others.
- 04 59:9 And whoso is SAVED FROM HIS OWN AVARICE - such are they who are successful. In because it treats the fault as something a person is rescued from rather than something they decide against.
- 05 9:24 Say: if your fathers and your sons and your brethren and your wives and your tribe, and THE WEALTH YE HAVE ACQUIRED, and merchandise for which ye fear that there will be no sale, and dwellings ye desire - are dearer to you than God and His messenger - then wait till God bringeth His command to pass. In because it puts wealth in a list of legitimate loves and makes the fault a matter of ranking rather than of having.
- 06 2:177 Righteous is he who GIVETH WEALTH, FOR LOVE OF HIM, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy. In because it is the same word - love - redirected, which is the text's own answer. ALSO CARRIED by three studies, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and 89:17-20 shows what the Qur'an thinks greed actually is.
It is a list of four, and the order matters. YE HONOUR NOT THE ORPHAN. YE URGE NOT ONE ANOTHER TO FEED THE POOR. YE DEVOUR HERITAGES WITH DEVOURING GREED. AND YE LOVE WEALTH WITH ABOUNDING LOVE. The love of wealth is the fourth item, and the three before it are all failures toward other people. The text presents the attachment as the thing behind the neglect, not as a private vice.
100:8 uses the strongest language in the set: IN THE LOVE OF WEALTH HE IS VIOLENT - vehement, intense, passionate, depending on the rendering. And 100:7 says the man IS A WITNESS TO THIS HIMSELF. He knows.
57:24 names the social form, which is easy to miss: those who hoard AND WHO ENJOIN UPON THE PEOPLE AVARICE. Recommending meanness to others is named separately from practising it.
59:9 changes the grammar in a way worth noticing: WHOSO IS SAVED FROM HIS OWN AVARICE - such are the successful. It is passive. The fault is described as something one is delivered from.
9:24 is the most useful verse for a reader trying to locate themselves. It lists fathers, sons, brothers, wives, tribe, acquired wealth, trade you fear will fail, and dwellings you love - all ordinary and none condemned - and makes the question whether they are DEARER TO YOU THAN GOD. The fault is an order of priority.
And 2:177 supplies the answer in the same vocabulary: the righteous person GIVES WEALTH, FOR LOVE OF HIM. The love is not extinguished; it is reassigned.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 89:17–20, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

They of Medina who had been in possession of their abodes and embraced the faith before them, cherish those who take refuge with them; and they find not in their breasts any desire for what hath fallen to their share: they prefer them before themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And with such as are preserved from their own covetousness shall it be well

Whatever God restored to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belongs to God, and to the Messenger, and to the relatives, and to the orphans, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer; so that it may not circulate solely between the wealthy among you. Whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it. And fear God. God is severe in punishment.
That which Allah giveth as spoil unto His messenger from the people of the townships, it is for Allah and His messenger and for the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, that it become not a commodity between the rich among you. The spoil taken from the people of the towns and assigned by God to his apostle, belongeth to God, and to the apostle, and to his kindred, and to the orphan, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer, that none of it may circulate among such of you only as are rich: What the apostle hath given you, take: What he hath refused you, refuse: And fear ye God, for God is severe in punishing
The spoils of the inhabitants of the towns which God hath granted to his apostle, are due unto God and to the apostle, and him who is of kin to the apostle, and the orphans, and the poor, and the traveller; that they may not be for ever divided in a circle among such of you as are rich: What the apostle shall give you, that accept; and what he shall forbid you, that abstain from: And fear God; for God is severe in chastising

O you who believe! Do not ally yourselves with your parents and your siblings if they prefer disbelief to belief. Whoever of you allies himself with them-these are the wrongdoers.
O ye who believe! Choose not your fathers nor your brethren for friends if they take pleasure in disbelief rather than faith. Whoso of you taketh them for friends, such are wrong-doers
O ye who believe! take not your fathers and your brothers for patrons if they love misbelief rather than faith; for whosoever amongst you takes them for patrons these are the unjust
O Believers! make not friends of your fathers or your brethren if they love unbelief above faith: and whoso of you shall make them his friends, will be wrong doers

Allah hath given you victory on many fields and on the day of Huneyn, when ye exulted in your multitude but it availed you naught, and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you; then ye turned back in flight
God has helped you in many a place, and on the day of 'Honein when ye were so pleased with your numbers; but it did not serve you at all, and the road grew too strait for you, where it had been broad; and then ye turned your backs retreating
Now hath God helped you in many battlefields, and, on the day of Honein, when ye prided yourselves on your numbers; but it availed you nothing; and the earth, with all its breadth, became too straight for you: then turned ye your backs in flight
Now hath God assisted you in many engagements, and particularly at the battle of Honein; when ye pleased your selves in your multitude, but it was no manner of advantage unto you, and the earth became too strait for you, notwithstanding it was spacious; then did ye retreat and turn your backs

Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the Allah-fearing
Righteousness is not that ye turn your faces towards the east or the west, but righteousness is, one who believes in God, and the last day, and the angels, and the Book, and the prophets, and who gives wealth for His love to kindred, and orphans, and the poor, and the son of the road, beggars, and those in captivity; and who is steadfast in prayer, and gives alms; and those who are sure of their covenant when they make a covenant; and the patient in poverty, and distress, and in time of violence; these are they who are true, and these are those who fear
There is no piety in turning your faces toward the east or the west, but he is pious who believeth in God, and the last day, and the angels, and the Scriptures, and the prophets; who for the love of God disburseth his wealth to his kindred, and to the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and those who ask, and for ransoming; who observeth prayer, and payeth the legal alms, and who is of those who are faithful to their engagements when they have engaged in them, and patient under ills and hardships, and in time of trouble: these are they who are just, and these are they who fear the Lord
It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces in prayer towards the east and the west, but righteousness is of him who believeth in God and the last day, and the angels, and the scriptures, and the prophets; who giveth money for God's sake unto his kindred, and unto orphans, and the needy, and the stranger, and those who ask, and for redemption of captives; who is constant at prayer, and giveth alms; and of those who perform their covenant, when they have covenanted, and who behave themselves patiently in adversity, and hardships, and in time of violence: These are they who are true, and these are they who fear God

Fakat iyilik Allah’a, ahiret gününe, meleklere, kitaba ve peygamberlere iman eden, malına olan sevgisine rağmen; akrabaya, yetimlere, yoksullara, yolda kalmışlara, isteyenlere, kölelere ve esirlere veren, namazı dosdoğru kılan, zekâtı veren, sözleştikleri zaman sözlerini yerine getiren, sıkıntıda, hastalıkta ve savaşta sabredenlerin yaptıklarıdır. İşte doğru ve takvalı olanlar onlardır.

The translators word this verse differently
It is they who exchange guidance for error, and forgiveness for punishment. But why do they insist on the Fire?
Those are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, and torment at the price of pardon. How constant are they in their strife to reach the Fire
They who sell guidance for error, and pardon for torment, how patient must they be of fire
These are they who have bartered guidance for error, and pardon for torment; But how great their endurance in fire
These are they who have sold direction for error, and pardon for punishment: But how great will their suffering be in the fire

That is because God has revealed the Book in truth; and those who differ about the Book are in deep discord.
That is because Allah hath revealed the Scripture with the truth. Lo! those who find (a cause of) disagreement in the Scripture are in open schism
That (is), because God has revealed the Book with truth, and verily those who disagree about the Book are in a wide schism
This shall be their doom, because God had sent down "the Book" with the very truth. And verily they who dispute about that Book are in a far-gone severance from it
This they shall endure, because God sent down the book of the Koran with truth, and they who disagree concerning that book, are certainly in a wide mistake
2:177 — the verse above

O you who believe! Retaliation for the murdered is ordained upon you: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if he is forgiven by his kin, then grant any reasonable demand, and pay with good will. This is a concession from your Lord, and a mercy. But whoever commits aggression after that, a painful torment awaits him.
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (injured) brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. He who transgresseth after this will have a painful doom
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you for the slain: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female; yet he who is pardoned at all by his brother, must be prosecuted in reason, and made to pay with kindness. That is an alleviation from your Lord, and a mercy; and he who transgresses after that for him is grievous woe
O believers! retaliation for bloodshedding is prescribed to you: the free man for the free, and the slave for the slave, and the woman for the woman: but he to whom his brother shall make any remission, is to be dealt with equitably; and to him should he pay a fine with liberality. This is a relaxation from your Lord and a mercy. For him who after his shall transgress, a sore punishment
O true believers, the law of retaliation is ordained you for the slain: The free shall die for the free, and the servant for the servant, and a woman for a woman: But he whom his brother shall forgive, may be prosecuted, and obliged to make satisfaction according to what is just, and a fine shall be set on him with humanity. This is indulgence from your Lord, and mercy. And he who shall transgress after this, by killing the murderer, shall suffer a grievous punishment

There is life for you in retaliation, O people of understanding, so that you may refrain.
And there is life for you in retaliation, O men of understanding, that ye may ward off (evil)
For you in retaliation is there life, O ye possessors of minds! it may be ye will fear
But in this law of retaliation is your security for life, O men of understanding! to the intent that ye may fear God
And in this law of retaliation ye have life, O ye of understanding, that peradventure ye may fear

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 89:17-20, 100:6-8, 57:24, 59:9, 9:24, 2:177, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - love + of + wealth; ye + love + wealth; niggardliness + of + soul; avarice; covetous; hoardeth + wealth + counteth. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 33:19 - the subject is cowardice in battle.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
