And stop them. They are to be questioned."
What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 37:24 And stop them, for THEY MUST BE QUESTIONED. In because it is the clearest statement of a questioning, and because the four translators agree on it - but note where it stands: in a passage about the gathering, not about the grave.
- 02 54:7 With downcast eyes they come forth from the graves as they were locusts spread abroad. In because it is the most vivid of the coming-forth verses and shows what the grave is in this text: a place people leave.
- 03 70:43 The day when they come forth from the graves in haste, as racing to a goal. In because it repeats the same movement with a different image, which establishes it as the settled picture.
- 04 100:9–10 Knoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth, and that which is in the breasts is made manifest? In as ONE PASSAGE because the emptying of the graves and the exposure of what is in the breasts are one sentence - the nearest the text comes to joining the grave to an examination.
- 05 102:1–2 Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you, UNTIL YE COME TO THE GRAVES. In as ONE PASSAGE because the grave here is the end of a distraction rather than the start of an interrogation, which is the honest shape of what the text says.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This study has to report an absence inside a presence, and the distinction matters.
The Qur'an mentions graves often. What it says about them is remarkably consistent: they are places people COME OUT OF. 54:7 - they come forth like locusts spread abroad. 70:43 - in haste, as racing to a goal. 100:9 - the contents of the graves poured forth. 102:2 - rivalry distracts you until you come to the graves, and that is where the distraction ends.
What the text does not describe, anywhere in these four renderings, is an INTERROGATION IN THE GRAVE. There is no questioning by two angels, no sitting up, no examination between death and resurrection. The detailed account of the questioning of the grave that most readers will have met is , and this study cannot quote, grade or assess it, because no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit. It should be said plainly that the material exists and that it is not in the Qur'an.
37:24 is the verse that comes closest, and it is worth reading carefully: STOP THEM, FOR THEY MUST BE QUESTIONED. All four translators carry it. But its setting is the gathering and the reckoning, not the grave - the questioning it announces happens after the coming-forth, not during the interval.
100:9-10 is the nearest the text comes to joining the two ideas: when the graves are emptied AND what is in the breasts is made manifest. Even there the exposure follows the emptying.
The interval itself - what, if anything, happens between death and resurrection - is carried by What does the Qur'an say about the state between death and resurrection (barzakh)?, and that study finds the text says very little about it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 37:24, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 37:24, 54:7, 70:43, 100:9-10, 102:1-2, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - grave; graves; questioned; brought + forth + graves. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 10 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:119 - about the Prophet's responsibility, not questioning of the dead; 2:134 - the same - responsibility for others' deeds; 2:141 - same reason; 9:84 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about praying for the dead?, where the prohibition is the subject; 23:35 - an objection to resurrection - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the resurrection of the body?; 30:19 - the natural cycle used as an argument; 35:22 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about whether the dead know the living?, where it is the central verse; 36:51 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the trumpet blast?; 43:11 - the rain analogy - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about winds and rain as signs?; 50:42 - near-identical to 54:7 and 70:43, both kept.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
