Woe to every slanderer backbiter.
What does Surah al-Humaza say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 104:1 Woe unto every slandering traducer. This is here because it opens the surah with woe, and the renderings word the one it falls on differently: "slanderer, and backbiter" in Sale, "BACKBITER, Defamer" in Rodwell, "slanderous backbiter" in Palmer, "slandering traducer" in Pickthall and "slanderer backbiter" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about spending versus hoarding? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with different reasons there.
- 02 104:2 Who hath gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it. This is here because it gives what that person does with wealth, worded "heapeth up riches, and prepareth the same for the time to come" in Sale, "amasseth wealth and storeth it against the future" in Rodwell, "collects wealth and counts it" in Palmer, "gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it" in Pickthall and "gathers wealth and counts it over" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about spending versus hoarding? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with different reasons there.
- 03 104:3 He thinketh that his wealth will render him immortal. This is here because it gives what that person thinks of the wealth, worded "his riches will render him immortal" in Sale, "his wealth shall be with him for ever" in Rodwell, "his wealth can immortalize him" in Palmer, "his wealth will render him immortal" in Pickthall and "his wealth has made him immortal" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about spending versus hoarding? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with different reasons there.
- 04 104:4 Nay, but verily he will be flung to the Consuming One. This is here because it names what that person is thrown into, "al Hotama" in Sale and "ElHutamah" in Palmer, "the Crushing Fire" in Rodwell, "the Consuming One" in Pickthall and "the Crusher" in Itani.
- 05 104:5 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Consuming One is. This is here because it puts a question to the person addressed about that name, worded "what shall cause thee to understand" in Sale, "who shall teach thee" in Rodwell, "what shall make thee understand" in Palmer, "what will convey unto thee" in Pickthall and "what will make you realize" in Itani.
- 06 104:6 (It is) the fire of Allah, kindled. This is here because it follows that question with a fire, "the kindled fire of God" in Sale, "God's kindled fire" in Rodwell, "the fire of God kindled" in Palmer, "the fire of Allah, kindled" in Pickthall and "God's kindled Fire" in Itani.
- 07 104:7 Which leapeth up over the hearts (of men). This is here because it goes on to the hearts, worded "shall mount above the hearts" in Sale and Rodwell, "rises above the hearts" in Palmer, "leapeth up over the hearts" in Pickthall and "laps to the hearts" in Itani.
- 08 104:8 Lo! it is closed in on them. This is here because it goes on to what is over them or closed in on them, in words the renderings do not all share: "an arched vault above them" in Sale, "like a vault" in Rodwell, "an archway over them" in Palmer, "closed in on them" in Pickthall and "closes in on them" in Itani.
- 09 104:9 In outstretched columns. This is here because it closes the surah with columns, worded "columns of vast extent" in Sale, "outstretched columns" in Rodwell and Pickthall, "long-drawn columns" in Palmer and "extended columns" in Itani, without naming what they are.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Humaza opens with woe, "Woe unto every" in Sale and Pickthall and "Woe to every" in Rodwell, Palmer and Itani. At 104:1 the one it falls on is "slanderer, and backbiter" in Sale, "BACKBITER, Defamer" in Rodwell, "slanderous backbiter" in Palmer, "slandering traducer" in Pickthall and "slanderer backbiter" in Itani. The verse names no one, and this study names no one. At 104:2 this person "heapeth up riches, and prepareth the same for the time to come" in Sale, "amasseth wealth and storeth it against the future" in Rodwell, "collects wealth and counts it" in Palmer, "hath gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it" in Pickthall, with "(of this world)" in his brackets, and "gathers wealth and counts it over" in Itani. At 104:3 he thinks his wealth "will render him immortal" in Sale and Pickthall, "shall be with him for ever" in Rodwell, "can immortalize him" in Palmer and "has made him immortal" in Itani.
At 104:4 Sale and Itani open with "By no means", Rodwell with "Nay!", Palmer with "Not so!" and Pickthall with "Nay, but". At 104:4 he is to be "cast into al Hotama" in Sale, "flung into the Crushing Fire" in Rodwell, "hurled into ElHutamah" in Palmer, "flung to the Consuming One" in Pickthall and "thrown into the Crusher" in Itani. Sale and Palmer write "al Hotama" and "ElHutamah", where Rodwell, Pickthall and Itani use English words. At 104:5 the renderings put the question "what shall cause thee to understand what al Hotama is" in Sale, "who shall teach thee what the Crushing Fire is" in Rodwell, "what shall make thee understand what ElHutamah is" in Palmer, "what will convey unto thee what the Consuming One is" in Pickthall, and Itani has "what will make you realize what the Crusher is?"
At 104:6 the renderings have "the kindled fire of God" in Sale, "God's kindled fire" in Rodwell, "the fire of God kindled" in Palmer, "the fire of Allah, kindled" in Pickthall, who adds "(It is)" in brackets, and "God's kindled Fire" in Itani. At 104:7 it "shall mount above the hearts" in Sale and Rodwell, "rises above the hearts" in Palmer, "leapeth up over the hearts" in Pickthall and "laps to the hearts" in Itani. At 104:7 the hearts are those "of those who shall be cast therein" in Sale and "of the damned" in Rodwell, with "(of men)" in Pickthall's brackets, and Palmer and Itani do not say whose they are.
At 104:8 the renderings part company: "as an arched vault above them" in Sale, "rise over them like a vault" in Rodwell and "an archway over them" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "closed in on them" and Itani "closes in on them". At 104:9 the renderings have "columns of vast extent" in Sale, "outstretched columns" in Rodwell and Pickthall, "long-drawn columns" in Palmer and "extended columns" in Itani, introduced by "on" in Sale and Palmer, "On" in Rodwell and "In" in Pickthall and Itani. The verses do not say what the columns are, and this study does not say either.
The studies What does the Qur'an say about spending versus hoarding? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day? also carry 104:1-3, each with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the slanderer the surah opens on, the person it addresses, the name it gives to where he is cast or the columns at its close, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 104:1, widening across 9 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 9 passages, each with every cleared translation
9 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 104:1-9, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all nine verses of Surah al-Humaza, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
